In the history of television, a very small percentage of series manage to stay on the air for more than a decade. More often than not, those shows that do hit that milestone find themselves running out of new and interesting ways to keep the stakes high and the plotlines fresh.
In the case of The CW’s Supernatural – which begins season 11 this fall – fans may argue whether or not the show is still as good as its first few seasons. Regardless, it does sound like this coming year will offer an interesting new villain for the Winchester brothers.
Entertainment Weekly recently caught up with star Jensen Ackles about what the new batch of episodes will offer, and the actor had some pretty intriguing words about what he and co-star Jared Padalecki will be fighting. Here’s what he had to say:
“As of right now, we have it built as one specific entity. Obviously, that would be a character that we’re introducing. But whatever the reach of that character, what that character can do, we’re not quite sure of. We don’t know the scope of her powers. This one’s interesting because it’s not really a monster. It’s more of a primal force that we know nothing about. There’s no lore; there’s no guidebook; there’s no instruction manual on how to deal with this.”
The exact nature of the Darkness, of course, will likely be one of the lingering mysteries throughout season 11. However, given the wide range of foes Sam and Dean have faced, it will be interesting to see how the Darkness compares to her predecessors and how the Winchesters will pay for their role in releasing this potentially omnipotent entity into the world.
Moreover, perhaps her as-yet-undisclosed powers could be used to open up a number of new story possibilities. We’ve already heard the show’s creative team and Jeffrey Dean Morgan tease the idea that John Winchester’s role in the story might not be finished. Could this be the season where Sam and Dean’s father makes a return appearance somehow? We’ll find out soon enough.
