In “Live Free or Twi-Hard” (originally titled “The Vampire Diaries” – and we know why that had to be changed), Sam and Dean are pitted up against their whiniest, most convoluted enemies to date. While everyone who has sat through the ramblings of the numerous Twilight movies will gleefully watch as the Winchester’s steak their proverbial Edward, there’s more to this episode than just poking fun at the teeny-bopper franchise.

After fighting vampires for much of his formative years, Dean finally falls victim to one of his adversaries and gets turned into a vampire. While that would most certainly result in Dean’s imitate death at the hands Sam, things appear to be different in this post-apocalyptic world. As Grandfather Campbell makes his return, he explains that there is a way to change Dean back. Of course, in order to do that, he’ll need to obtain the blood of the vampire that turned him. That is easier said than done as one thing stands in their way – the Alpha vampire.

DEAN IS TURNED INTO A VAMPIRE — After a group of young girls go missing, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) realize that a group of vampires have taken up residence in the small town.  After a fight with two of the blood-suckers, Dean is bitten and turns into a vampire.  Samuel (guest star Mitch Pileggi) tells Dean he can change him back but he’d have to get the blood of the vampire who turned him.  Dean infiltrates the nest and runs into the Alpha.

  1. I was laughing so hard at the overacting of the couple that opened the show, appropriately named Kristen and Edward!

    • Excuse me, but I haven’t seen all six season of supernatural and I didn’t get he whole twin vampire sequence? Explanation?

      • I’ve seen all 5 previous seasons and all released season 6 episodes. The psychic sequence was… new, to say the least! We’ll have to wait and see what comes of it.

    • Kristen and Robert, actually- I remember this only because he was alternatingly “Robert”, “Rob”, and “Robbie”.

  2. Sup with Sam he just stood there for a while and almost smirked while Dean was being turned. Maybe a little of Lucifer did remain with him or… he’s on demon blood again :S

    • yea WTF man!

    • Yeah, no way that’s Sam…
Next episode should explain SOOO MUCH.

      • im also pissed on how Dean handled Lisa and Ben. freakin cop out.

        • eh, I can sort of take it- but only on the premise he was panicking. Which he a minute later says he did.

    • Yes I noticed that. Wow, his brother is being eaten and he smiles.

  3. This season really is starting to shape up. I really like the idea of the Alphas of each monster breed are coming into play. The mysterious nature behind the Alpha Vampire was creepy and intriguing. I was skeptical at first after the first few episodes, but it’s looking like there is a lot to look forward to. I can’t wait to find out who is strong enough to pull Samuel out of heaven, Sam out of hell (With Lucifer left behind) and why he/she wants the Alphas.

  4. “He’s watching her sleep, tell me that isn’t rapey?”

    • Sam, this was a hard episode for me to watch, even though it had it lighter moment, i was pissed that sam just stood there letting Dean get taken by the Alpha. more pissed that yet again Dean was a wanker to Lisa and Ben.

    • Then Dean stands there watching Lisa sleep- WOW. xD

  5. I am glad that the season is getting better with every ep.
Well, Sam has to have some reason why he just stood there. Since he knew that his grandpa has the cure he just wanted an experiment but WHY??? And with his bro??? c´on man…u are creepy…
Think it has to be a part of that deal he made to get out of the hell or smtg…. xD
Just my favourite moment Dean standing there and staring at lisa while she was aslept. Just right before he said its rapy :DDD LOL

  6. Episode one was boring – but that’s cause DeanWinchester was playing house. Episode two showed us a glimpse of whats to come and I was happy that I would continue to watch, not only for DeanWinchester character but for the storyline as well. And last night’s episode was so brilliant! What indeed is up with SamWinchester? I have a theory of what’s up with Sam but that just makes me go ‘how predictable’ and so I won’t entertain it. This show has been too good (except 1 or 2 eps per season) and I want it to continue to S10 (wishfully thinking!).

Dean: You’ve got my back … right Sam?
    Sam: Always….

This gives a whole new meaning to brotherly love!!! Awesome episode!!

    • As long as they keep it fresh like they have so far, I’d love to see it keep going, too. =)

    • Oh yes I def hope so. Looking forward to the next episode a lot. I’m itching to know whudafxup with Sam.

  7. im wondering if Sam made a deal with Crowley himself. would be an interesting twist.

  8. Sam came back without his soul. Gotta be what it is. I thought Samuel was a bad guy somehow but even he seemed appalled by the possibility of what Sam had done.

      • The Doctor, youre probably onto something there. i nearly turned the show off when Sam didnt lift a finger to help Dean though…something told me to stick it out. normally i dont get so pissed about my favorite show, but last night i was yelling at the TV LOL.

        • I was shouting at the screen!
But for me, I find this a good thing, because the first four episodes, I didnt care anymore. But when Sam just stood there…I’m interested in this show again.

          • yeah im wondering if that whole scene was intentional on Gambles part, to get a reaction from us viewers

            • Absolutely, and if that was their intention, it sure worked. They wanted an audience reaction, and from what has been said on here, they got one.
But ultimately, this season needs it. The show has existed in the equilibrium between the brothers, and over the years they have swapped roles several times, but now we as an audience have something new. And we have no idea what will happen next!

              • i hope Cas can shed any light on this situation. i sure hope Lisa doesnt give up on Dean, and Dean stops being an ass everytime something goes awry.

      • Well I agree that that’s a good theory but keep in mind that through all the episodes that Lucifer was on the show, he never smirked or laughed.

  9. Didn’t like the episode. They’ve completely derailed both characters. I feel like both Jared and Jensen feel the same way; their performances have been kinda lackluster compared the last 5 years.

Last week’s Bobby-centric episode was brilliant, and I really hope this season produces more like it, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Also, Anthony, nitpick, but you’ve wrote “Dean’s imitate death.” I’m sure you meant “imminent.”

    • christ man. NO ONE is perfect, even you :)

    • As long as we’re picking a nit…”While everyone who has sat through the ramblings of the numerous Twilight movies will gleefully watch as the Winchester’s STAKE their proverbial Edward, there’s more to this episode
than just poking fun at the teeny-bopper franchise.”

Stake being a sharp piece of wood, while steak refers to meat.

  10. It really infuriated me when Sammy stood by and did nothing to help Dean, I’m convinced that is not the real Sammy and now Deans knows it for sure!!! Stop by Supernatural Underground on Facebook hit the like button and join the conversation!

  11. It’s still really early in this season so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

  12. I think sam is possessed But! It’s by an ex-angel or something crap like that. either way looking forward to the season

  13. $50 says that Sam’s still a meatsuit for Lucifer.

      • The entire Young Mcgyver pilot is on YouTube. It’s one of the worst things I have ever seen, but you can’t help but watch, like a car accident.

  14. Sam has no soul, but where is the colt and the deamon killing knife seems they would be handy when you are going into a room full of vampires.

  15. The demon knife is for demons. You gotta stake the vampire or cut its head off. Anyways, they need more hot girls on the show. My gf watches it with me and she’s interested in the guys, but they need women also!!! Any chance Sam is the new king of hell?

  16. Well actually we really have no idea how (and why) Sam made it back/who did bring him back in that deus ex machina manner and who or what Sammy exactly is. Really disturbing to see him acting like he did in this episode. Sure thing is, he doesn’t seem to be (fully) himself, and that’s all this episode wanted to tell us.
I don’t believe that there’s still Lucifer in him either. I’d think Lucifer is still down there in his cage; and for the season, I’m generally asking myself what happened to Michael/Adam and wether the angel and his vessel are still sitting in that cage together or if one of them or both also got out in some way. But with Raphael as the last remaining archangel in heaven being busy getting everything under control, I suppose that he is trying to find a way to release his brother(s) to complete the apocalypse. Well and for sure: If Michael gets out or already got out he’d surely be pissed off by the boys and “Team Free Will”.
And still there are the questions what happened to Chuck? Where is God (is he God?); why is it Samuel Campbell chosen to be revived and not Mommy/Daddy or Deanna? Is there a special reason for it?
And…I’m still missing Gabriel…I think I any being deserved to be brought back from death, then it would surely be him. Not just for the sake of fun (because Gabriel is fun!) but also because (if he continues to be that responsible acting as in the episode he died) he could get order to the chaos in heaven and take is younger brother Raphael down.

And I don’t see yet how the monster storyline with the alphas and the demonic/angelic storyline are connected…if they have any connection at all.
