Supermax Moving Forward And Will Be Awesome?

green arrow2 Supermax Moving Forward And Will Be Awesome?A little over a year ago we commented on rumors that there might be an unconventional take on a Green Arrow movie in the works. It was tentatively titled Supermax and involved our hero trying to escape an ultra high security prison designed specifically to house super-criminals.

At the time I freely admit that I thought that while it was an intriguing idea, I figured it would fall flat at the box office (you can just read the article at the link above). However today comes a script review from the good folks over at Latino Review that makes it seem it might actually make a pretty rockin’ movie.

Here’s a description of the basic idea for the story from writer David Goyer a year ago:

“It’s like ‘Alcatraz,’ and he has to team up with, in some cases, some of the very same villains he is responsible for incarcerating in order to get out and clear his name. Of course, tons of people try to kill him while he’s in there. We’ve populated the prison with all sorts of B and C villains from the DC Universe. For the fans, there will be all sorts of characters the hardcore comic book junkies will know, but they’re all going to be there under their human names and no one is wearing a costume, but there will be a lot of characters with powers and things like that.”

In the latest version of the script the description of Oliver Queen in his Green Arrow garb sounds a lot like the version we’ve seen in Smallville:

“The Green Arrow wears a tight green leather suit, quivers attached to his ankles and thighs, and a giant COMPOUND BOW running across his back. His face is concealed by a dark hood.”

Over at Latino Review they’re pretty discerning about scripts they review and they’re obviously excited about this one:

“Want to know how cool SUPERMAX is? The prison changes shape, cells rearrange, and reconfigures every night to disorient the prisoners from breaking out. A transforming super prison! Cool.”

As I mentioned a year ago, they plan on populating the movie with all sorts of obscure DC Universe villains.

For a full (and pretty spoiler-filled) description of the script head on over and read it for yourself. They also have images of many of the super-villains that are supposed to be in the film.

  1. I still think that this sounds like a stupid idea.
Superhero stories without costumes just piss me off.
I like Green Arrow a lot so , I would be quite happy to be wrong about this movie.

  2. I gotta admit, I thought this movie was going to fail as well, but after reading this, I can’t help but feel that they’re doing a good thing here. Save for a few exceptions nowadays (Iron Man), superhero flicks usually are pretty cliché. This would be a refreshing change.

It would PROBABLY sell more than a movie that just covers the origins of Green Arrow, because he’s not really that well-known as some other heroes, and to boot he doesn’t exactly have a very inspiring story. And anyway if the movie grows popular, it can make a true Green Arrow movie more plausible. This one just needs a good cast and director… and a better name than Supermax, I think!

  3. Sounds good, but whats with all the emphasis on minor DC villians. Sounds like they are either trying to make up to or trying to impress the fans too much if you ask me.

  4. Surma that was one of my concerns mentioned in my original post on this.

  5. IDK a transforming super prison sounds like the piramids in AVP.

  6. I think it sounds pretty cool. I hope they make this movie. I didn’t read the script because I liked to be surprised. :P I like the Green Arrow, and I think they would do well to cast the guy from Smallville in the part. He does a great job as Oliver Queen.

  7. I like the idea of including minor villains though. Should be a lot of a lot of easter eggs to longtime fans. And anyway, I dare you to name three major Green Arrow villains quickly.

  8. The superhero film would be very unique and more than likely a “R” rating film. Just have to see if the director has the right mindset for this film.

  9. The Green Arrow and Green Lantern stuff from the 70′s is some pretty deep stuff dealing with corruption, drug addiction, racism and pollution. Thats why I couldn’t get into it when I was a kid but in my late teens I began to go back and really get into the Green Arrow stuff so I’m really looking forward to seeing this movie actually happen. I also love the idea, such an original idea for a superhero movie instead of the standard origin movie.

I think David Goyer will get the story right, now it all depends on who they cast in the roles.

  10. BTW, Hearing a lot of B-level Batman baddies could be showing up in Supermax…or as I think it’s being called now Green Arrow: Escape from Supermax. There will also be a in name only cameo by The Joker. His name will appear on one of the cells from what I’ve read recently

  11. hey Vic, any new NEWs on superMAX ?

  12. @Rorschach

Sorry, nothing – or we would have written about it.

  13. I hope Justin Hartley plays Green Arrow in the movie. The first time I saw him in Smallville I was shocked to see that they found someone who looked just like the comicbook character. He’s the only one who should be allowed to play this role.

  14. prison movie or not i think that the movie should stick with its orgins
