Zack Snyder Is Directing the Superman Reboot [Updated]

Hero Complex has just dropped a bombshell – Watchmen director Zack Snyder will direct the Superman reboot, which is tentatively titled The Man of Steel.

This will partner Snyder with producers Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas, as well as screenwriters David S. Goyer and Jonathan Nolan (the latter of whom was rumored for the director’s chair himself).

[Update: THR is reporting that Zod will be the villain of The Man of Steel and that Snyder says to Variety that Brandon Routh will not likely return]

Is this a match made in comic book movie heaven? Or a mismatch that will lead to Superman movie hell?

Snyder comes with an impressive resume – His work on 300 and Watchmen has made him a beloved favorite among the fanboy nation (I even saw him win an award for it during a party at the 2009 Comic-Con). In addition to having earned the adoration of the comic geek crowd, Snyder is also a genuinely impressive filmmaker, one who may even be worthy of the title “auteur” given his signature style of cinematic storytelling, which has already redefined conventional film genres like the sword-and-sandals epic (300), or even children’s animated adventures, as our own Vic Holtreman acknowledged in his review of Snyder’s most recent film, Legend of the Guardians.

(And by the way, if you didn’t know, our own Rob Keyes pointed out all of these redeeming qualities just a few weeks ago when he picked Zack Snyder as the top choice amongst Warner Bros.’ shortlist of Superman reboot directors. We need to give that man his own crystal ball!)

However, as is the case with any comic book movie, there are going to be fans who claim that Snyder is all wrong for this Superman movie. There will be those who say that Snyder’s slow-motion action sequences, or slavish loyalty to his comic book source material are going to bog down this Superman movie rather than enhance it – and those are fair concerns to raise, truthfully speaking. However, this is going to be Zack Snyder working under the supervision of Christopher Nolan – a pairing that I don’t think anybody would’ve seen coming a year ago. Having two of film’s most visionary and talented directors putting their heads together to bring a new vision of the most iconic comic book character there is to the big screen is one experiment that I think most of us can admit at least piques our interests, no?

Now that we know who will be sitting in the director’s chair, I guess we can watch the debate unfold about how good or bad this decision is. Once we’ve exhausted that argument discussion, we’ll move on to the other big points of contention, such as who should play Superman, What story this reboot should focus on and which villains should be included in it (to Lex or not to Lex, that is the question…)

Sound off about this epic decision in the comments below.

    • Anthony,

  4. Vic,
My comments are not being posted under the comment I reply to. Any reason for this?

    • Kahless,

I’m not sure, I just posted a comment as a reply to another and it ended up in the right location.

  5. If this guy brings Routh back, I won’t slate is choices any more.

  6. I like the character Superman but one thing I really am not liking is how DC (I guess it’s DC doing this) is weakening him. I remember when Sups was so strong he could pull planets. Now, Wonder Woman gives Sups a problem in a fight. And even in the last animated movie….

    ***** SPOILER ALERT *****

Darkseid makes Sup look like a wimp. Kara had to come in to save the day.

    ***** END SPOILER *****

Now I hear of another animated movie coming out where Sups is dying of cancer because of over-exposure to sunlight? Where is the Sups that traversed the universe and fought demons from different realms? The Sups who could hear Lois from across the cosmos? I WANT THE SUPS THAT CAN JUGGLE FREAKING PLANETS!!

    • he’s failing because he’s overpowered not many in the general audince like him anymore because he’s overpowered and a boyscout that’s the issue.

      • I don’t think many in the general audience don’t like Superman anymore because he’s overpowered. I would have thought the opposite to be true.

I’m more of a MARVEL dude, but I’ve always thought of Superman as invincible with kryptonite as his only weakness.

I’m thinking Thor the God of Thunder and Superman as being equal in strength and would make for a great MARVEL/DC crossover series where they team up to fight a common enemy.

I’m sure DSB will probably disagree with me about the equal in strength part. :-)

Anyway I prefer to see a super muscle flexed Superman with invincible powers. I hope whoever gets the part is put through a rigorous six month workout in the gym.

“overpowered and a boyscout” – why is that an issue? Once again I’m assuming with my limited knowledge of the character that Superman has the highest level of integrity, judgement, and responsibility.

  7. I see Tina Fey for Lois Lane, especially if they’re going with Hamm for an older superman.

    • Really?

    • Good God no. I like Tina Fey, but she is NOT Lois Lane.

  8. My biggest issue with Zod is if this film is supposed to be a continuation from the Donner films. Zod was killed at the fortress at the end of Superman 2. So unless they show something that explains how he survives and regains his powers, I don’t see how they can use that continuity.

    • his is a reboot, not a sequel.

  9. Does this mean that Tyler Bates will be doing the music? (I noticed he did 300 and Watchmen)

  10. Interesting match up.It’s like pairing Gandhi up with Mohammad Ali and making them fight vampires.Could be fun!

    • fun my ass this movie is ruined already this decade is not for justice league maybe the next 7 years or so
im really disappointed with this director

      • So what’s your reason for being disappointed with Zack Snyder or Christopher Nolan?

  11. Well this piece of news just made my day. But I’m kinda disappointed that Brainiac may not be the villain. After seeing his giant frosted ship and him capturing cities and slaughtering beings of different galaxies in the book “Brainiac” I thought it would look epic put to the screen.

  12. He’ll do a good if not great job. The slow motion punching and extended fight/action scenes is what the franchise needs. All of the animated Superman movies are bringing lots of action on the small screen. It’s time we saw an exciting, balls out, current rendition of Supes.

  13. Eric Bana could play superman/ clark kent. think about it. Does not matter if he already played the hulk cause edward norton replaced him anyhow.

  14. Great choice! Wonder who they’ll cast. And there’s no way they’re using Zod, Hollywood Reporter doesn’t know what it’s talking about….there won’t be any connection to the Donner films it’s a reboot (yes, the first movie was great but it’s time to move on and make a film that did what the ’78 film did for its time for our time).

  15. Snyder will probably do a sex scene for Louis and Clarke, slow-mo

    • With heavy blue lighting

  16. Thanks for the mention, Kofi!

Didn’t even see that the first time I speed-read this on my iPhone
