DC Showcase: Green Arrow

Oliver Queen (Neal McDonough) is on his way to the airport to pickup his girlfriend Black Canary, who he hopes to make his wife. Queen doesn’t want to make his lady angry by being late, but when he arrives at the airport he recognizes a villainous rival archer, Merlyn (Malcolm McDowell), and realizes there’s evil afoot. Queen dons his Green Arrow outfit, jumps in to save the day, and quickly finds himself caught up in assassination plot involving a tweenage queen and a classic DC villain.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if Santos ever wants a crack at directing one of these full-lenght DCU animated features, he’s welcome to it as far as I’m concerned. Along with writer Greg Weisman, Santos perfectly captures what makes Green Arrow great: like Batman he has no super powers, isn’t as smart or as well-trained as Batman, but he’s great with a bow, brave, dashing, witty, and isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. It’s really hard to hate Green Arrow, and this animated short certainly captures that sentiment.

DC Showcase: Jonah Hex

What’s sad about this particular short is that the DC Showcase team manage to do in ten minutes what the entire Jonah Hex movie couldn’t do at all: Introduce Jonah Hex in a way that generates fan interest and makes you want to follow further adventures of the character onscreen. Thomas Jane (The Punisher) voices Hex, a scarred-face bounty hunter who comes to town in pursuit of his latest bounty, Red Doc (Michael Rooker). Problem is, Red Doc has already been done in by a murderous gang led by a ruthless prostitute (Linda Hamilton). When Hex comes asking questions, the gang set their sights on him next.

This cartoon is everything that the Jonah Hex movie should’ve been and was not: A western that features a badass anti-hero character – none of that supernatural powers crap. If DCU wants to do an entire Hex animated feature in the future, I’m all in.

[SIDE NOTE: Thomas Jane definitely should’ve played Jonah Hex in the live-action movie. Jane even did a makeup test as Hex to audition for the part and still didn’t get it – yet another comic book movie missed opportunity…]

  1. I just rented this from work and thought it was awesome. Really good stuff, the Spectre should get a big screen movie, really cool character.

  2. does the extras come on dvd or just blu ray? I really do enjoy a majority of the DCU stuff

  3. i watched this movie also and its great Shazam should be turn into a big budget live action movie.

    • Agreed. DC needs to get Captain Marvel an animated TV show or something.

  4. Looking forward to see it i’m waiting on the latest DC toon my GF is getting it for me for Christmas but shh I’m not suppose to know.

  5. I would love to see Captain Marvel on the Big screen, But who to get to play Captain Marvel? The Rock?

    • There was a rumor awhile back that had him in the running for Black Adam.

  6. not even in the comics did it make superman look this helpless.

    • Was planning to buy this for my collection, but after I saw my buddy’s copy I was very disappointed. Superman has a vulnerability to magic, but not that bad. He has been able to handle either one of these guys without going all out, plus Superman gets stronger everyday under a yellow sun. This was another poor attempt to upgrade the Shazam crew again. Not buying it, or the dvd. Black Adam does not whup Superman like that ever! Be faithful to the fans that made DC great. Superman is thee icon… not Captain Marvel or Black Adam.

  7. I am glad he is more resistant to magic now.

    • Dudes, I thought this thing was due out on Tuesday. Is it at Walmart now?

      • Yeppers

  8. So I have all these other shorts on other DVD collections so if I want to see this new Shazam short I have to buy stuff I already paid for once…WTH?!

    • I’m with you on that.

  9. Just finished watching and you are totally right about Jane playing Hex in the movie but I’m glad he dodged that bullet. I hope he gets another shot at the Punisher

  10. I didn’t know that about Jane and Jonah Hex!! He would have been AMAZING!! I’m torn about buying this since I have dvds with the other shorts already on them. :/

  11. I just watched Capt and I enjoyed it. I just wish they would have did 4 different shorts on the Captain Marvel Shazam family, like a back story on Black Adam. The other shorts on the blu ray I already have. And on Jonah Hex I wish the writer of the short would have written the live action movie. More Fanboy writers and directors.

  12. I think this feature was awesome! However, there was no need to showcase the three additional features that are already out there (which I have) to the masses (the fans). They could have introduced us the the rest of the Marvel family, without having the majority of us fans pay for something we already have watched or have in our possession. DC, your movies are great – but someone needs to inform the “higher-up”, fans hate to be taken advantage of, and in this case this is what’s truly happening!
Please don’t get Greedy. It’s bad enough we pay $14.99 – $19.99 for a video that is only 65 – 73 mins in length! Love ya DC, but please extend that “love” to us fans!!! Fans can turn on you in a heartbeat – ask Brock Lesnor –> he fights for the UFC (I know this has nothing to do with comics – but fans are fans!) No matter what genre!!!

    Nuff said!!!

  13. This is silly. Superman is on Earth-1 (or Earth-2 if it’s supposed to be the golden age supes). The Shazam family is on Earth-S.
