Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ Delayed Half a Year

man of steel delayed to summer 2013 Zack Snyders Man of Steel Delayed Half a Year

Zack Synder’s Man of Steel (aka the Superman reboot) is in the midst of pre-production, with Russell Crowe having been recently cast in the part of Superman’s biological father, Jor-El, and Christopher Meloni in the part of a general (possibly Lois Lane’s father).

Unfortunately, fans are going to have to wait much longer than they previously expected for this movie, because Man of Steel has just been pushed back a whole half a year – from December 2012 to June 2013. That’s one month less than two years from now, folks.

According to The Playlist, the precise new date is June 14, 2013. Speculation at the moment is that December 2012 is just too packed full of major features, including The Lone Ranger, Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, and most importantly, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Both The Hobbit and Man of Steel are not only blockbusters, they’re Warner Bros. blockbusters. And in light of the financial failure of Green Lantern – and the underwhelming returns of the previous Superman film – the prequel to The Lord of the Rings was obviously the safer bet.

Even with Man of Steel moving to 2013, 2012 will still be a banner year for superhero movies – even more so than 2011 – thanks to tent-pole projects like The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises.

For those who’ve followed the Superman copyright debacle – briefly, Warners’ copyright claim to the current version of the man of tomorrow is expected to end come 2013 – Man of Steel need only go into production by 2012. It doesn’t need to be released by 2012.

On the one hand, it’s a shame we can’t see Superman go head-to-head in 2012 with that other DC powerhouse, the caped crusader, as well as the Marvel ensemble epic known as The Avengers. On the other hand, 2011 has been (perhaps) oversaturated with epic superhero origins, so maybe the release date shift will give those other superhero films – and Man of Steel itself – some room to breathe.

How do you feel about the new release date? Does six more months seem unbearably long? Or is it a welcome reprieve from superhero films? Let us know in the comments.

Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, hits theaters June 14th, 2013.

  1. What do I think? I think it SUCKS. We’ve waited long enough for Greatest Superhero of All Time. Sheesh!

  2. I hope you all are right……I hope Snyder leaves (or is let go) in favor of Nolan.

How about Richard Donner, what’s he doing these days??

    • Mate, it won’t start filming til’ Jan 2012 at least so no, no trailer this year.

      That is extremely naive.

  3. Im really sick to my stomach with all the coming and going on superman,, heres what you do get rid of snyder, and get someone else who can make this film and have it out sooner than 2013,, for crying out loud what are they playing at. This is crazy we should all start movement to get someone else to do this film. I dont like Snyder Im not a fan of any his stuff and now he is making a complete mess of superman. There is not even a role of film of this made and its already a mess I say get rid of snyder Im sick to the stomach either they make it or they dont,, this is turning out to be one spin after another,, let snyder do some other film not this one, superman deserves someone else, maybe ask Richard Donner Back like what Kevin says what about the combination of Donner and nolan working together on this or how about Riddiley Scot,, he would be brilliant, how about a combination of all three,, who knows but I think snyder should be given another dc super hero but not superman,, superman is the holy grail of super heroes ,, WE WANT SUPERMAN NOT IN 2013 , WE WANT MOVEMENT ON THIS,, NO MORE RUBBISH! NO MORE SPINS EITHER GET IT MADE SNYDER OR DONT MAKE IT AT ALL GIVE IT TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO MAYBE NEEDING A GIG LIKE THIS, GIVE TO SOMEONE NEW WHO WOULD LOVE TO TAKE THIS ON , OR SOMEONE WHO KNOWS THE BEST WAY TO TAKE THIS ON AND WHO WOULD LOVE TO REALLY TAKE THIS ONE C’MON AS THE SPANISH SAY BASTA ELS BASTA = ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,, IM REALLY TIRED OF THIS FOOLING AROUND WITH SUPERMAN ,, ITS NOT REALLY FAIR TO WAIT TIL 2013,, I DONT ACCPET THIS AND EITHER DO MANY ,, GET YOUR BOOTS AND YOUR CLOACK ON AND GET ROLLING ! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

    • dude are you nuts? give it to someone “new”?? how the hell would WB risk giving such a huge title to someone “new”?? picture the awesome action sequences, picture perfect stop-motion and beautiful color blending and gloss effects imagery that Snyder won audiences over with in “300″ and now apply that to Man of Steel. What you have there is a visual masterpiece for a more than well deserving Super Hero such as Kal-El. This movie will go down as the best Super hero epic adventure of all time. Print that

  4. I’m not over the moon that the date has been put back but I don’t know what the big fuss is all about. Its clear that in a business sense its a bad time to bring the film out. Everyone can see that. OK we as fans are not happy but if you were a big corporate guy who wanted lots of money you would have done the same. Money talks for them.

As for Snyder. I don’t think this has anything to do with him or the script being a mess. Why would Henry Cavill say its one of the best scripts he’s read? He didn’t have to say anything. So part of it will be an origin story. Am i the only person that is happy about that? Jesus I’d love the whole thing to be told in a new way. Krypton is going to be different. Not that rubbish boring stone age krypton like the original.

I have great ideas about what it will be like and I can only hope they get it close to what im thinking. I’m keeping the faith.

  5. oh and all that talk about filming not starting until Jan 2012. Where the hell did that come from? They are filming in August. Roads have been closed off for days so they can do it. Don’t people read anything on the internet?

  6. this could be a good thing or bad thing, if the delay is because they want to make this movie better and use the 3d technology from avatar iam all for the wait, the last thing we need is another horrible superman movie… GREEN LANTERN may have tanked but it was pretty true to the comic book and proved that TRANSFORMERS and other franchises can take their adventures to OUTER SPACE instead of copying each other over and over, the bad can be if MAN of STEEL ends up being other SUCKER PUNCH…

  7. jesus christ why is everybody hating on snyder? he made ONE flop, and sucker punch arguably wasnt even a flop (underrated). i think people expected guardians to be darker and more mature just because it came after snyder’s 300 and watchmen (both awesome, btw) and it drew in the wrong audience, but snyder is definitely capable of making satisfying blockbusters, especially working off adaptations. give the guy a chance.

  8. That new picture of Henry Cavill in the superman costume looks pretty damned good.

  9. Superman deserves a great story and a great villain. Superman is probably the one hero that doesn’t NEED action sequences.
Snyder is not one for making movies with good stories, but rather for just nonstop action.
I’m kinda shaky on this one, right now, and I’m not crazy about the costume (yeah, it has nothing to do with the story, but I don’t like the unrealistic and buff look to it. Superman doesn’t need big, huge muscles. He has the powers already.).

  10. Warning signs!

    A whole year???!!!

It can work. I remember 48 hrs was run through the rewriting machine so many times it was believed the movie would be a total disaster. But instead the result was the signature movie in the buddy cop genre.

Can M.O.S. pull it off? We’ll it’s possible. Anything is possible. The extra time could grant better effects design. Three dimensional depth in character development. Better understanding of the material in general. This could be a very good omen.

The two things i hope however is that Zachery Snyder doesn’t put such a huge emphasis on special effects when on earth. But I hope he makes Krypton a special effects dream.

I have some faith. I really liked DAWN OF THE DEAD. Please Zachery. This is when you need to seize the moment.

Don’t make me a hater mr. Snyder.

  11. if there are too many blockbusters coming out in december then release it in January or February not half a freackin year. I call shenanigans
