Superman Man of Steel Superman Reboot Plot Rumors; Anne Hathaway As Lois Lane?

The rumor mill for Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Superman franchise, The Man of Steel, keeps chugging along, even now that speculation about a middle-aged Clark Kent or General Zod as the villain in the film has been laid to rest.

Additional (possibly even accurate) information about the film’s plot has been discovered, while another 20-something, A-list actress is now being rumored as a top contender to play Clark Kent’s object of affection, Lois Lane.

[Update: Anne Hathaway is Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises and Henry Cavill has been cast as Superman]

Word is that a character description for Man of Steel has been sent out to a variety of casting agencies, who are currently searching for an unknown, 28-32 year-old actor to play the iconic superhero. What’s Playing claims that Snyder’s Clark Kent will be “a young journalist, traveling the globe, who would rather solve problems and help people without resorting to using his special powers,” and provided the following information about the reboot’s plot:

When he is compelled to use his secret powers to intervene in a crisis in West Africa, Clark returns to Smallville to learn more about his origins and the hero he was born to be.

The Man of Steel plot details Superman Reboot Plot Rumors; Anne Hathaway As Lois Lane?

Recall that while Superman reboot “godfather” Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins was the origin story of the Caped Crusader, it also plumbed the psychological depths of Bruce Wayne and sent him (literally) on a journey to understand himself and his purpose in life. These possible Man of Steel plot details should definitely be taken with a sizable grain of salt, but the proposed storyline would very much pave the way for Nolan and Snyder to examine the Superman character in a fittingly complex fashion.

Allowing Clark Kent to venture out and explore the world would also be an effective means to modernize the character, who would find himself in new territory by actually confronting, head-on, the global issues and crises that afflict the world – outside of Metropolis, that is. Nolan’s Batman films have benefited from shifting the setting beyond that of Gotham City – will the Superman reboot do the same?

Anne Hathaway as Lois Lane?

Just about every young, established actress working in the biz right now has been (and likely will be again) floated as a possibility to play the role of Lois Lane in Snyder’s Superman reboot. While Warner Bros. was interested in Natalie Portman a while ago, the new gal rumored to be a serious contender for the part is Anne Hathaway.

The Oscar-nominated Hathaway would be a decent choice for the role of Miss Lane, though we agree with The Playlist that someone like Rebecca Hall (The Town) seems like a better fit to play the character, who has more than her share of beauty, brains, and focus on her career – especially when Superman is in the picture.

The Man of Steel is expected to begin shooting by June 2011, so it’s a bit early to expect any concrete information about the film’s plot or casting decisions to leak out just yet – but what do you make of these new rumors?

  1. Anne Hathaway would be a solid choice as Lois Lane! I think the only actress’ that should be considered for Lois is Hathaway or Rachel McAdams actually. Emily Blunt would be good also. Olivia Wilde would be too skinny.

As far as Superman goes. I think WB’s, Nolan and Snyder should not waste time and energy doing an unnecessary world wide casting search for the actor to play Supes.

They should just target Armie Hammer or Henry Cavill and move forward with one of those two actors for Superman. Especially since it looks like Jon Hamm will not be considered and Routh is not coming back.

  2. Hathaway seems wholesome to me, I’d like to see her in the part.

  3. Isn’t late for making such a movie for june 2011? Nothing should be doing fast…

  4. Hah, Getting the actors from Smallville would be the only thing to make the Superman film great based on it’s proposed plot & everything rumored of whats it will be about. Jon Hamm, or Anne Hathaway as considered choices? you must be kidding Nolan Bros, Snyder. Atleast theres other films that year to see.

    • IMO, they would just ruin the movie, and cause me to skip it entirely.

  5. smallville is better then any other live version because it’s weekly.welling is playing a character, not a real man.i think he is the best choice because he can act,and actually looks like superman more than anyone(including reeve).

    • hell no! reeves born to be superman(dead ringer of comic books), i love welling but he’s to teenage type for a movie… ( i know he’s like 30 but still looks very young)

  6. Smallville rules!

  7. I’m sorry but Anne Hathaway is NOT Lois Lane! I have no Idea who Olivia Wilde is and I do not CARE who she is, If she wasn’t in Thor I would say Natalie Portman would make a decent Lois and I’m standing by Zooey Deschanel as Lois, not saying she’d get the part, but I could see her as Lois. I’d rather see Ann Hathaway as Catwoman or maybe as Cat Grant in a Superman movie but NOT as Lois.

  8. Tina Fey.

  9. Smillville rulez alright

  10. This Superman reboot plot just seems too much like a remake of Superman Returns imo, only thing is it doesn’t involve Superman being absent from Earth for 5 years & having a son etc. The plot treatment would work easier & much better with Tom Welling & Erica Durance. Knowing the film is reboot & having it take place a year after Smallville’s finale events would be a possibility imo. WB should really rethink what they’re doin.

    • I have to agree with you that it sounds like Superman Returns. I loved the film, but having this reboot with a similar plot would take away any reason of rebooting the franchise.

  11. Anne Hathaway or Zooey Deschanel for Lois Lane!

  12. I’ve said it before, I’m not a big supes fan,and it doesn
‘t make a big difference to me who plays lois. Iwould say Roseanne would be a bad choice, but other than that I think all the actresses mentioned would work out. I’m not a big comedy fan, but my wife convinced me to watch the Get Smart remake a year or so ago, and A.H. played a pretty serious role in that, if I remember correctly. Don’t really see her playing a superhero, but I can believe a tough gutsy reporter.

  13. As far as the plot goes….and for you smallville fans….how’s about this for the series finale…..I like the idea of having a whole episode with Clark as superman in the suit….as other people have had the same opinion. I just so happened to be watching the Doomsday finale fight (season 8?) and I am still uncertain that he is gone. I think he is underground and what if the Darkseid “smoke” takes on/possesses Doomsday and then Superman has to fight him in the finale and banish him into space….? I think Clark/superman should win but get the crap beat out of him. Lois should go to the barn to only find his suit and a letter. Clark decides to go on a self-discovery journey to West Africa…..a perfect set-up for him (welling) to play superman in the reboot…..

  14. 1. Kate Beckinsale
    2. Rebecca Hall

    • Yup i been saying Kate Beckinsale for a long time just google her images on google.

      • Shes a bit too old I think. Hathaway just doesn’t fit either. Tough call for the casting dept.

    • I would love to see Kate play Lois but she is so beautiful I wouldn’t look at Superman LOL

  15. 1. Kate Beckinsale
    2. Anne Hathaway

or a much younger Courtney Cox?

  16. I am getting sick and tired of this emo Superman garbage! When am I going to see a full out super-battle?! Honestly, I don’t care who they get for Lois because I want Supes to go toe-to-toe with some super villain. I WANT MOUNTAINS TO CRUMBLE!!!! I WANT MAXIMUM DAMAGE!!!!!!!

  17. @Kahles I agree. I want to see a bad-ass superman go head-to-head with a physically and mentally superior adversary. I don’t mind Brandon Routh or Tom Welling, but for god-sakes would it kill the producers and studio to have superman buff up a lil.

Christopher Reeve will always be the best superman IMHO. He just looked the part; had the height, looks, tone, and just commanded the superman presence. Now if they can find a person who is as good as Reeve and put the new Superman (Routh) suit on him (minus the leather cape, short boots, speedo, and small emblem). They could have something.

Why are they so afraid of making a Superman action/sci-fi/space adventure movie. Below are my choices for both Superman and Lois Lane. Sorry no Anne Hatheway or Rebecca.

    Lois: (No particular order)
    Susan Ward
    Jenna Dewan
Courtney Cox (if they go for a 35-40s tone or if they want superman to have an older love interest)

    Superman/Clark:(No particular order)
    Colin Egglesfield
    Matthew Bomer (Mat Bomer)
    Don Diamont
    James Scott
    bryan datillo

  18. Oh and of course Routh or Welling or Sage Brocklebank

  19. Oh and of course Routh or Welling or Sage Brocklebank.

  20. Does anyone realize that the West Africa storyline being floated is the basic premise of the ‘Birthright” storyline written by Mark Waid. Either they are looking to actually base it off that or someone heard a rumor that was made up concerning that story line.

    • Bill, yes that has come up in other websites that the plot sounds rather familiar and very similar to Birthrite….which is why I think this is just a rumor….because when it was first announced by Zack snyder about what the plot would be he said several times it would not be based on any superman comic or previous superman story……but I could be wrong.

  21. i think they should use the cast from smallville they r already in the mind set of superman. u could use the movie as a next chapter in the series.

    • @ arik cardenas

Id say alot of people were all for that including me. The only thing is about that is we might not have Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor in the Reboot franchise which would be too bad cause imo he’s the best guy who’s played Lex to date in live action with John Shea in 2nd place imo. Unless he agreed to do a minor part or somthing maybe in the last film of the reboot series. Right now im not impressed with the way they’re starting the reboot using same characters we’ve seen already instead of starting with fresh ideas, especially when it comes to villains.
