Two ‘Man of Steel’ Trailers Revealed!

Published 3 years ago by , Updated July 21st, 2012 at 3:46 pm,

Two official teaser trailers for Man of Steel – a reboot of the Superman franchise, from director Zack Snyder and producer/co-writer Christopher Nolan – are attached to prints of Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, and can now be viewed online.

Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Immortals) as Clark Kent, a young journalist who was born Kal-El: a survivor of the fallen alien planet Krypton, transported to Earth by his parents Jor-El (Russell Crowe) and Lara Lor-Van (Ayelet Zurer). Small-town farmers Jonathan (Kevin Costner) and Martha Kent (Diane Lane) raise Kal-El as their son, imbuing him with a strong sense of integrity and compassion so that he learn to use his extraordinary powers responsibly – even in a troubled world that views him as a threat, rather than a potential savior.

Warner Bros. premiered a sizzle reel from Snyder’s film at the Comic-Con 2012 Man of Steel panel, and there are chunks of that footage in the official theatrical trailers. The latter are shorter and more structured than their Con counterpart, but manages to leave a similar impression – namely, that Man of Steel aims to offer a nuanced and serious take on the Superman mythos, befitting the contemporary age of superhero movies (and influenced by DC Comics’ “New 52″ reboot).

That approach includes: an altered version of the Superman costume, meant to make the character look more like an armored warrior (than a guy in a skin-tight unitard) – and a stripped-down visual style that lacks the digital polish found in Snyder’s previous comic book adaptations (300 and Watchmen), in favor of the muted colors and realistic texture featured in Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

Man of Steel Header1 Two Man of Steel Trailers Revealed!

Nolan’s influence is readily apparent in Man of Steel footage shown to date, what with the continued emphasis on the philosophical aspects of the Superman story – as reflected in scenes where a disheveled Clark travels the world as an ordinary man, and listens to teachings about how we shape our destiny, as passed down by both his biological and adopted father in the two separate trailers (Pa Kent – above/Jor-El – below). Those elements are woven together with Americana imagery (shots of wagons and clotheslines around the Kent farm) that harken back to Superman’s origins as an All-American hero.

Overall, the mix of old and new Superman mythology should go over well with certain fans, while others will be left grumbling about how their favorite superhero has been “Nolan-ized.” It will be arguably be more interesting to see how Man of Steel is received by the moviegoing masses as a whole. If the film is a success, it could set a precedent for the DC Movie Universe; if it flops, that could inspire Warner Bros./DC to drastically change their (as yet, unannounced) game plan

Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Antje Traue, and Ayelet Zurer. It is based on a story co-coceived by Christopher Nolan and Davis S. Goyer (who also co-penned the script), and directed by Zack Snyder.

Look for Man of Steel to open in U.S. theaters on June 14th, 2013.

  1. Really hope this can lead into a JLA film!!

    • Agreed

  2. I love this trailer. We might finally have a good Superman movie, especially with Snyder & Nolan involved.

  3. Why would Superman be hitch hiking, or working on a boat, or looking like a hobo? Is he without powers for some reason? I hope they aren’t getting too carried away with doing something different to the point of losing the character altogether.

    • Yes, why would something be happening in a movie you haven’t seen yet?

      • In the original SUPERMAN movie with Christopher Reeve, young Clark Kent walked to the Arctic too. He knew that he was different…special…but he didn’t know how to harness those powers and abilities yet.

I suspect that it could be for this reason or that he wants to look like a normal human being instead of an alien refugee from a dead planet.

      • exactly.

Why would Suoerman be working at a newspaper and take the elevator instead of flying to the third floor?

Yeah. It looks pretty great. I’m susprised because I’d expected a style overload.

        • I’m not a superman fan and was expecting a overdone mindless action teaser, but am very surprised and hooked to see that beauty of it.

    • Im sure it’s just his attempt to “fit in and be normal” feeling, as that was always an issue for him before taking on the responsibility of being Superman… OR they’re making it so that he doesn’t discover his powers till he’s a bit older? Which would be lame… But I’m 98% sure it’s the former reason. He’s trying to feel normal.

      • No he discovers his powers when he’s young. In the SDCC trailer, there was a bit with Clark saving a bus with his superpowers when he was like 10 or 12 years old.

    • Maybe he’s living with fellow Earthlings, and trying to understand how we live and behave. Just trying to fit in.

To be a hero with so much power, he must be able to grasp the frailty of humankind.

      • Maybe he lost his power? (Superman 2, ALSO with Zod)

        • hehehe yea……not in an origin story. Do you want them to piss of the public more on their perception of Superman?

From the start they said they wanted to make Supes somebody ppl could relate to, those other theories about him trying to fit in in places where he could possibly hide his powers etc. seem more on point.

    • it’s because he wants to act as humanly possible. i heard he asked his biological father to remove his powers therefore that’s why he is asking for a ride and a fisherman until trouble (general zod) arrives to Earth.

  4. I kinda of hope that EVERY DC movie is “Nolan-ized”… He’s by far one of my favorite director/producer/writer in Hollywood… and just his take on Batman showed that he brings a dark and particular realism to the super heroes. Someone made a comment yesterday about an “explanation” to the ending of TDKR… which I thought would totally butcher the trilogy… and I suppose I can’t say much more without giving any spoilers to those who may not have seen it… but the jist of it was that I believe if they tried connecting the end of TDKR later in the Man of Steel movie in order to aim towards JLA… that would be uncool… In any case… back to my original point… Every DC movie from here to JLA should have a touch of Nolan. So I am really anxious to see this. :D

    • No. Nolan’s batman was great and all, but every DC superhero (especially JLA members) have their own unique flavors. Nolanizing them all would be a disservice to the characters and their potential.

Furthermore, why the hell do you want to watch the same thing over and over again. Go watch Nolan’s trilogy again if you want to. Don’t campaign for other superheroes to be altered for your tastes.

      • Now l might be Nolan’s biggest fan, but even l don’t think all the DCs should be done the same way.
Although he might capture what the JLA characters are about and work on that philosophically.
ldk it might just be my almost inappropriate love for Chris Nolan speaking and maybe it’d be best if he just stuck to co-writing/producing Superman for now and did his original projects

      • Exactly. Just because Nolan’s style worked for Batman, it doesn’t mean it would work for every character. I can tell you now that a dark and gritty Superman film would not work. Why? Because Superman isn’t dark like Batman is. They need to stick to what makes the characters who they are. Heck, that’s exactly why his Batman films worked in the first place.

    • No please god above, no more nolan in dc. While I love the first two batman’s. I want a comic book batman. I wanna see a gotham not chicago. The realism has to go and not be introduced into any other dc character.

  5. Is it just me or did they just play the theme song from the Fellowship of rings……the part where Gandalf fell in Moria with the Balrog?

    • Not just you.

    • Yea I got the same feeling but wouldn’t mind the comparison to another Oscar winner if I were Zimmer

      • It probably won’t be anything that has a catchy tune you can bet on that but it will without a doubt pretty awesome

    • Zimmer hasn’t finished working on the soundtrack yet, so yes they did go with the Fellow ship of the Ring soundtrack.

  6. An individual with unlimited power living in our world would be very hard on them. Imagine how a game loses it’s thrill once you have god mode. He can easily pick the direction of evil, laziness, indifferent, or good….. many of us given the gift of unlimited power would choose one of the first three. The hardest to choose and maintain would be “Good”. There’s a story here and I for one can’t wait.

    • very very well said. . you see things as many others do not

  7. If superman had crashed in the ocean as a child, He never landed on earth, he would be krypocean. And be Aquamans neighbor and be in love with a mermaid…Not with One person like “lois lane”.

  8. I loved the first couple Reeve’s superman movies, and not so much the ones that came after.

This new take on Superman I must say, is giving me goosebumps. I love the serious tone, psuedo-realistic physics while he was breaking the sound barrier, and the focus on finding his way. I love it.

I really have a good feeling about this one.

  9. Looks trash, i hate the suit, it looks dirty & more alien when Superman was supposedly trying to show his home is earth. Bad choice in actors for Superman they should’ve tried harder, Brandon Routh was the best replacement i’ve seen for Superman.
The only problem with Superman returns was he had a kid, other then that it was great because it wasn’t a Reboot it was a Revamp. I’m sick of seeing restarted origins anyway.

    • The only part of Superman Returns that even remotely resembles the character and visuals of Superman, was the plane save. EVERYTHING else about that movie was garbage.

      • I’m sorry but it was a great Revamp.
I didn’t like Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane though, ick.
However Superman Returns was great because it continued what was already set & it could’ve been a great start to a sequel with lots more action.

        • Yeah… Superman Returns was so “great,” that it made no money, has been generally panned and led directly to this NEW Superman film, to reboot the franchise. ‘Cause that’s what happens with most “great” films, right? :)

          • Superman returns made as much money as batman begins, Superman Returns wrote itself into a corner by giving Superman a son.
Man Of Steel is reflecting the DC universe Reboot so going into a sequel from Superman Returns would lose alot of people with the storyline.

        • That movie sucked hard. How can you say that was a good superman movie? Like the guy said besides the plane save everything else sucked bad

    • Superman Returns was a piece of s***. And so were the Donner films. If you think what you saw in those films is all there is to Superman, you are ignorant and sadly mistaken.

Superman doesn’t abandon earth. Superman doesn’t creepily spy on Lois Lane. Superman doesn’t have memory erasing kiss, time-travelling flying around the earth powers, or the ability to throw his S-logo as an attack. Lois Lane is attractive, chrismatic and charming, not ugly like the Donner films and charisma-dry like Returns. Lex Luthor isn’t a bumbling buffoon, he is a bad***. Nor is Lex Luthor like only one of 2 villains Superman ever fights. Speaking of fights, Superman CAN fight i.e. he CAN throw a decent f****** punch.

Furthermore, The special effects have su****. His other powers have never been fully shown nor have they been used to their full extent. Superman isn’t overpowered, he just fights beings on a power level higher than say… Batman’s physically weaker/human-ish enemies. Lois Lane and Clark’s relationship can be heartwarming but it’s been mostly shallow in these film, which is exactly why the romance emphasis never took off in Returns. For example, in the Iron Man films you can see the bonding and connection between Tony and Pepper, so their scenes together are endearing, not obnoxiously drearily dragging like in Returns.

I could go on and on and on. But I choose to believe that you aren’t so ignorant to still insist that Returns or the Donner films were any good at all.

PS. I’ll give the Donner films this, the casting of Chris Reeves was brilliant. On the other hand, Routh can’t act or charm his way out of a paper bag.

      • Oh and I don’t care if you’re sick of reboots. the Superman movie franchise was so badly damaged that anything short of a reboot would’ve been a disservice to the character.

      • Oh i understand Superman doesn’t do any of those things as in the movies, i’m just not an anal retentive comic jockey as you are.
So understand people have opinions, likes & dislikes that differ from yours.
If you don’t like it or can’t understand that then shove your arrogant attitude up your butt & go else where.

  10. This movie looks amazing! I cant wait for the finally badass superman weve all bin waitin for. Henry cavill looks exactly like superman. I hope snyder n nolan have sumtin to do wit every dc movie made from now on. Perfect combo.

    • No you can’t apply Nolan to every DC character and expect instant success it will get repetitive

  11. This movie looks amazing! I cant wait for the finally badass superman weve all bin waitin for. Henry cavill looks exactly like superman. I hope snyder n nolan have sumtin to do wit every dc movie made from now on. Perfect combo

  12. This movie looks amazing I cant wait for the finally badass superman weve all bin waitin for Henry cavill looks exactly like superman I hope snyder n nolan have sumtin to do wit every dc movie made from now on Perfect combo

  13. Costume does look lousy, colors look dark enough to be Bizarro’s costume so if they use him as a villain, his costume will have to be darker colors than Superman’s. I like the actors but don’t feel they’re right for their roles as i thought most of the cast wasn’t in Superman Returns.
I agree about Brandon Routh. Imo id like to have Superman Returns ignored completely just as Superman 3 & 4 were. Only keep Brandon Routh & replace the rest of the cast. I don’t see why Superman needs a origin story again with same villains. I mentioned before about reading about the film, that from whats within the film is nothin that new at all. If anyone watched Lois & Clark, Superman:TAS, Smallville, would get a idea of what i mean.

    • I agree with you, they should’ve kept Brandon Routh & ditched the rest of the cast from Superman Returns.
And i agree with you on this Superman suit & origin storyline with the same villains. The Superman suit looks like a Bizarro setup.
While i agree about the same old villains, in an origins storyline whom else could’ve been chosen to face Superman. It’s either Lex Luthor or them. It’s far to early for any other villains. Another reason i hate Reboots, rehashing the same old villains with 20different ways of telling the storyline.

      • @ VampireWicked

Thanks. I agree with people moderning Superman’s costume but still like others on the web & people i know personally i prefer Superman’s costume still include the yellow belt/red briefs. If something ain’t broken, why fix it? Especially when the character stayed that way for how many years now? I wouldn’t use Lex Luthor or Them. They could of used Morgan Edge instead of Luthor along with Intergang in the sequel. For a film like Superman Returns, i would of had Superman return to earth with Brainiac as the only villain who ends up following him there. I kinda hate reboots myself. Because just about every reboot always seems to copy the original films in more ways than one whether it’s a CBM, Horror film, Sci-fi, etc. Everyone knows Hollywood must be running out of ideas if they’re remaking/rebooting just about every franchise known.

        • They cannot legally use the red briefs any more due to the image lawsuit with the creator’s family. That is why they were removed in the comics as well.

        • @WallyWest
Yea i was thinking Brainiac to or parasite.

I liked the yellow & red to but like il princerino was saying it has something to do with that lawsuit & the creator’s family.
I remember being told about that in a bookstore.
The creator’s family didn’t like ALOT of how Superman was done in the comics, so i guess that’s probably apart of the whole DC universe Reboot too.

          • @ VampireWicked & il princerino

I see. I guess i was misinformed back then or misread somthing. What was it that the creator’s family didn’t like of how Superman was done in the comics? And why were the yellow & red were off limits? Thanks for clearing it up.

              • You notice how Superman looks different in everything, from the InJustice game to Young Justice tv series & how all of the DC universe characters were rebooted.
I’m guessing that lawsuit is why DC comics Rebooted it’s universe. To redo origins & costumes & put a DC owns the modern version stamp on it just in case someone else wants to sue.

      • look at it this way. Brandon sucks! he looks like a gay superman(no offense meant). I would prefer something with more swagg!!! and a little more gritty, not like the recent movie.

      • “Another reason i hate Reboots, rehashing the same old villains”

Um, is that why Batman Begins used Scarecrow and Ras al Ghul? And why The Amazing Spider-Man used Lizard?

  14. I love Superman, him and Spidey are my 2 favorite characters, but this teaser was underwhelming. I HOPE that this is as epic as the first Superman film was, but if this teaser’s job was to get me psyched up for this movie, it failed.

  15. the flying part at the end was really cool, i have faith in this movie b/c not only is snyder a good director (especially when it comes to action and visuals) but the narrative seems to have some really realistic themes as well and appears to be more relateable then nolan’s unrealistic dialogue and posh characters.

    • These will be still nonal’s characters and dialogue

  16. I, along with many people in the theater, thought that the trailer was relatively underwhelming. However, I am still very excited for this movie, and I am glad we’re getting a reboot of Superman, with his story being told in a (presumably) smart, gritty, realistic, and character-driven fashion.

  17. trailer looked like s***, i hope the movie is better but i doubt it will b.

  18. pretty sure the music from this teaser trailer is from lord of the rings.

    • Gandalf died.

  19. I thought it was pretty nice how Jor-El’s phrase “But in time, they will join you in the sun,” was said as the butterfly was in the sunlight. Pretty intelligent considering the effects of the sun in butterflies and superman.

  20. Awesome ! it those have a Nolan style alright

  21. Absolutely impressive!
The tone, the look and the feel of this trailer is by far superior to so many superhero films.

Yes, it has the dark edge of Batman, but so hauntingly beautiful, I hope the whole film feels like this.

A little but reminiscent of X2 is some respects (a serious and deeper tone).

I am hoping the performances will be great as well, and I think Cavill can deliver.

  22. Finally!!!

  23. looks promising. as compared to the recent superman movie which was so F#$#%*g weak!!! Nolan has his prints all over it!!! Looking forward to this one!!

  24. I know this film will be good with Nolan and Snyder’s involvement. But this teaser was weak. The deep meaningful stuff is for the theatrical trailers. Teasers are supposed to get you hyped within the 1.5 minutes they have. I doubt most of the general, mostly-comics-ignorant audience even fully understood that this movie’s about Superman. Since all we have to indicate that is a blurry image of some dude flying in the distance, and the S logo. Even the name’s the lesser known monicker ‘Man of Steel’ rather than ‘Superman’.

    • I think you have it the other way around.

  25. am i the only one who noticed the Lord Of The Rings Soundtrack?? the one right after Gandalf *Dies* ;);)

  26. Listen up, narrow-minded people! This is a new take on Superman. Maybe, he doesn’t want to be super or wants a normal life. Personally I think it’s really exciting. The two trailers are good(I prefer Costner’s voiceover). But the comic-con trailer was great

    • Lol yeah, because new takes on characters are always great. Nic Cage’s Ghost Rider, Fantastic 4 movies, even Superman Returns.

      //sarcasm intended of course.

  27. Can all these reboots do away with the retelling of the superheroes origin. Seriously, we don’t need to be told again.

    • Yes his origin has been done but not in great detail as what they are aiming for here.

They need a way to reconnect with audiences everywhere after SR disappointed and made Superman a joke to many.

    • @Greg: Actually, I think we definitely DO need his origin story again, for the following reasons:

      1) The original Superman movie came out over 30 years ago. Many people need a refresher, especially the younger generation of moviegoers, who have possibly even not seen the original movies, (or at least cringe when watching them because of the outdated special effects).

      2) Although many of us are VERY familiar with the origin story from movies, tv shows, and specifically comics, the same cannot be assumed of general audiences who for the most part do not read these comics, watch these tv shows, etc, and are therefore not so familiar with the story.

      3) Snyder (with Nolan’s help) seems to be taking a more gritty and realistic approach, and it would make sense to create a complete story, obviously starting with the origin.

  28. I can definitely see the Nolan influence here.

Time will tell whether that’s good news or not.

  29. I don’t think a lot can be said from this trailer. I’ve always had concerns over Cavill cast in the role or indeed Synder as the director. We need to see more before we can make a proper judgement

Oh the use of LOTR music just got me thinking more about how good the Hobbit is going to be. If only Peter Jackson was directing Man of Steel as well.
