Zack Snyder has been slightly more successful than Christopher Nolan in preventing photos from being snapped on the set of his highly-anticipated Superman reboot, Man of Steel.

It helps that Warner Bros. selected to unveil an official image of Henry Cavill in his Superman costume before shooting got fully underway on Snyder’s reboot. However, that doesn’t mean the amateur paparazzi aren’t out in full-force lurking around the Man of Steel set (see: early images of Cavil as Clark Kent).

Today we have a handful of set images that reveal noteworthy details about the costumes of the new incarnations of Superman, the criminal Kryptonians General Zod (Michael Shannon) and Faora (Antje Traue) – and possibly even U.S. military man General Swanwick (Harry Lennix).

Fair warning: Anyone who doesn’t want to know anything about Man of Steel, besides that which was revealed in the (vague) official plot synopsis, should not read on. These set photos only contain MILD SPOILERS, but they still have their fair share of revealing details. You’ve been warned…

Still here? This first image (via the unofficial Man of Steel Facebook page) offers another look at Cavill’s Superman costume (minus one classic article of clothing) and Faora’s updated outfit:

Yes, it looks like Kal-El won’t be wearing his trademark red briefs (on the outside of his suit, that is) in either Man of Steel or Action Comics’ upcoming relaunch of the character. To quote the famous line from Maurice Sendak’s “Where the Wild Thing Are”, “Let the wild rumpus start!”

On a less-provocative note: It looks as though Faora won’t be wearing looser black garbs like her onscreen predecessor, Ursa, wore in Superman II. Instead, the villainess looks to be costumed in a tighter outfit that sort of looks like a cross between Kate Beckinsale’s Underworld catsuit and old-fashioned metal armor, complete with a flowing black cape – practical, but still stylish, in other words.

For a better look at her outfit – and what appears to be additional confirmation that Michael Shannon will wear a CGI costume to play General Zod – check out the photo below:

This last Man of Steel set image should also prompt some incredulous reactions, seeing how it appears to feature Harry Lennix in a motion-capture outfit as well. Just look for yourself:

Does this mean Lennix’s General Swanwick is actually a surviving Kryptonian? Or that he gets ahold of Zod’s suit (which, as /Film has speculated, may resemble Jim Lee’s portrayal of the character) at some point? The latter scenario is all the more questionable, since Lennix – or someone who looks a lot like him – isn’t wearing a mo-cap band around his head, like Shannon (or his stunt double) as Zod is, in the previous image. Could it be some version of the Metallo armor suit, as featured in Superman: Secret Origin?

Will Shannon sport the Zod armor?

Will Lennix don the Metallo suit?

Both Christopher and Jonah Nolan were involved with crafting the Man of Steel storyline early on – and those two are known for throwing unexpected twists in the mix – so Snyder throwing us a couple of costume curveballs in Man of Steel is not out of the question.

Man of Steel won’t hit theaters until June 14th, 2013, so there’s plenty of time to speculate/complain about all these tidbits of information – before we get some concrete answers.

  1. Seems like the people who like the new site are more into heavily action-movies that are more about being spectacular than original. Perry White is a WHITE guy, has always been so don’t touch that. His hair isn’t the way we know Superman either. I’m curious about the trailer but it seems that this director (from Batman which explains the horrible changes) is totally disrespecting the late Christopher and Dana Reeve. Brandon Routh managed to be a worthy successor but this seems to be about a show, and not about the story the fans worldwide know.
This is more like Superman becoming the Dark Knight. If this is how the American public wants to see it than I’m glad I am not one of them because I would move away from the US! It’s up to us fans to keep the true spirit alive of Superman. I have a nice costume and will keep wearing it during carnival.
Next time, Hollywood, please find a worthy director so this hothead can keep his hands off of it. Or take back Bryan Singer.

    • I agree with the perry white issues, but i can live with that. if you ever read the comics you would know that superman is very violent individual, he may stand for justice and the american way but when a villian challenges him, he goes all out to protect the individual around him. they changed his to custome due to law suit against dc. Secondly, superman is an alien not an american. i believe his custome should his represent his orgin and his actions should reflect the idealogy of the american public . which is justice for all individuals high or law in our society.

  2. Who cares about the suite, he looks good. What I have hated about the evolution of superman is the loss of being the “last son of Krypton” with all the Kryptonians running around. Who ever made him susceptible to magic should be locked up. Lastly, why if you have one weakness (sorry two with the stupid magic thing) would you not wear a lead lined suite. My 5 year old asked me that question, you would thinks Sups could figure it out.

  3. Why does it matter if Perry White is being played by a black actor Lawrence fishbourne is a great actor I love how there mixing everything up a little bit. You said that it’s the fans job to keep the character of superman alive well that’s exactly what this reboot is doing. I love the Christopher reeve movies as much as anyone he was overall born to play that character I loved Margot kidder as Lois and cooper as white Hackman as luthor stamp as zod you name it those movies were a ton of fun I even loved superman returns when I saw it in theaters for my 9th birthday. But y’ know what there comes a time when life just goes on and you can’t fight it or else you’ll just get stuck that’s why returns wasn’t as big a success as people hoped because it was the same thing as always, I mean the way superman has always worked is that he would just fly into a room and everyone’s problem would get fixed in less than ten seconds which is great but the problem is its not real I mean if there was a guy with a red cape that was flying around the world the people would be pretty scared because they don’t understand who he is where he came from why is the way he is ect… The reason why returns wasn’t as loved as it couldve been was because it didn’t have the new modern day human element that I just described Kirk Alan was the best superman for his generation George reeves was the best superman for his generation Chris reeve was the best for his generation and route was the same thing as reeve in that whole movie he was just pretending to be Christopher reeve and that’s not always the healthiest approach to a movie it’s time for us to get a superman for our generation we live in such a different time than when the other movies were made so this has to be different in order for it to be fun. Please give this movie and this new superman a chance I’m not asking you guys to change your opinion I’m just asking you to please try and accept that as good as the old superman stuff was its a different time now and change has to happen its part of life it’s inevitable and it’s never bad it’s just different and there is nothing wrong with different.
