Superman More Superman: Man of Steel Plot & Villain Rumors

Much like fellow DC comic book movie title The Dark Knight Rises, Zack Snyder’s Superman: Man of Steel has been the subject of much speculation and a whole lot in the way of unsubstantiated rumor. Just yesterday there was “news” that the Superman reboot would essentially amount to an adaptation of Geoff John’s “Superman: Secret Origin”.

There’s another supposed Man of Steel plot synopsis currently making its way round the Web right now – along with a slightly more credible rumor that newcomer Adam Harris is in the midst of auditioning to play Lex Luthor in the film.

Here’s the Man of Steel plot description that’s popped up on both MovieNewz and Superman Superworld:

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone’s imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here?

Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as “Superman,” not only to shine as the world’s last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.

That vague synopsis actually sounds feasible, in terms of the approach Snyder will likely employ in order to “modernize” the Superman character. There’s a good chance that this description is just the work of fans, but Cavill’s Kal-El will almost undoubtedly have to grapple with similar personal and philosophical issues along these lines.

Lindsay Lohan and Lex Luthor?

A Man of Steel casting rumor that (bizarrely enough) is refusing to die is that of Lindsay Lohan being in talks to join the film. Despite her most recent scuffles with the law, Radar Online insists that the actress will be auditioning for the rumored female villain role in Snyder’s reboot. That’s assuming she isn’t convicted of grand theft by the time production officially gets underway (translation: don’t take this rumor seriously – we deserve to be shocked if Lohan actually signs on).

One bit of more reasonable news that Radar Online and You Bent My Wookie are both claiming as true is that relative newcomer Adam M. Harris is auditioning for the role of iconic Superman arch-nemesis, Lex Luthor. He would follow in the footsteps of Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey by portraying the brilliant (and often bald) criminal onscreen, and – if we assume there is any truth to this news – could possibly be in contention with the likes of Michael Shannon for the role.

Fans generally seem split over the potential inclusion of Lex Luthor in Snyder’s Man of Steel; some people seem quite tired of Luthor always popping up in Superman movies, and others appear dead set against the idea of a Man of Steel pic that doesn’t feature the brilliant but power-hungry character. If you glance over Harris’ IMDB resume, you’ll note (among other things) that he’s not that much older than Henry Cavill – and the idea of a Luthor who’s about the same age as Clark Kent is also something that I know a lot of Superman fans (those that enjoy Smallville aside) are not crazy about, put mildly.

While all of this should be considered strictly RUMOR for now, the idea of Lex Luthor appearing in Man of Steel is certainly a reasonable one. Given the high pedigree of stars selected for roles in Snyder’s reboot so far – including Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, and Amy Adams – there seems a good chance that a better known thespian (like Shannon) would be selected for the role of Luthor, instead of Harris. On the other hand – Cavill was a left-field choice to play Superman, so who knows?

Superman: Man of Steel is gearing up for production to start in the second half of 2011, so we’ll find out more in the way of concrete information soon enough.

  1. In my opinion, to have Superman you need Luthor. The thing is, he can’t be the main and/or only villain this time around. There needs to be someone Supes can actually fight, like Parasite, Brainiac, or Metallo. Darkseid could be interesting too, but I could see him in more-so a third film to finish off a trilogy or something like that

    • Darkseid is, obviously, superman’s bane!

  2. Lex HAS to be in this movie, even if it is just a cameo. It needs to be shown that he is in CK’s world. He is the definative Superman villain. I agree it should be a new villain taking the lead, and although I don’t want to see Zod, it makes sense to have him be the main antagonist if this is to be a trilogy. From there you could have LL/Braniac in movie 2 and Doomsday in movie 3. Luthor needs to be a constant throughout, whether working in the sidelines or being the main man in the sequel….

  3. Personally I would save Darkseid for a JLA movie, He IS a GLOBAL threat after all. As for Metallo not being a threat to Superman, I disagree, He IS a threat to both Superman and Lois. But Metallo Would work better as a secondary villain, pair him with Brainiac or even Luthor. But if they do use Luthor….AGAIN, don’t use the “Greatest real estate scheme of all time” hoohah again. That is just old. I don’t know if anyone else agrees with this, but it’s just the way I feel about it.

    • @ Chris O

I agree. Darkseid would be a creat choice for a villain in a Justice League villain cause he is considered a global threat. Metallo isn’t one of my top favorite villains but i think he should be paired up w/ another earthly villain of Superman’s. Imo, like Darkseid i see Brainiac can carry a film on his own since he can be considered a global threat aswell.

  5. I respect the fact that Zack Snyder is trying to rebuild the Superman characters story and make it more interesting than past movies. I’m not trying to be sexist or anything, but a woman villian is not a good idea. Superman 2 staring Christopher Reeves was a good movie due to the fact there were 2 guys and 1 woman. I can’t see the man of steel in a “intense and at the edge of my seat” kinda fight with a woman. I’m HUGE Superman fan, and I think every superman fan out there is ready to see a fight for the ages. Superman vs. Brainiac, Superman vs. Bizzaro, Superman vs. Metallo. Just to name a few. We can save Doomsday and Darksied for another film. And hell yeah we need Lex Luthor. Wouldn’t be the same without a bald genius plotting superman death.

    • That’s true about legitimate female villians/adversaries; I remember Wolverine battling LadyDeathstrike in the Xmen movie, “took me right out of the movie!” Just doesn’t resonate well at all. Sort of like watching Angelina(-100 lbs.) in any movie, physically besting a (190+ lb.)male opponent, its simply psychologically daunting; Wonderwoman, absolutely is an exception!

    • @ GINO

In a way, after watchin season 9 of Smallville & a episode from season 10 id have to agree.

  7. A mistake. Should have given Tom Welling the Superman role. This guy doesn’t look the slightest bit like Superman. Hope they don’t mess this movie up. One of the greatest, if not the greatest comic book hero of our time deserves someone’s best efforts.

  8. this movie wont work in the same way returns didn’t they had Superman in the form of a well accepted world wide Tom Welling…and guess what…yep…they’ve screwed it up again, and by the time Welling dose play the part noone will be interested becauuse the franchise will be joke!!!

  9. Luthor is lame. Time for some real carnage with a super bad-a$$!

  10. Its so obvious who the villian will be, its gonna be general zod.lex luther is done and everytime we watch a superman film now most people still have the smallville characters in there head. If i was writing the script i would have superman in a massive battle between general zod and an. ending to the film that would be cool. maybe have some micheal bay type of big explosions. Man of steel must be a dark film though. superman returns was too comical and light.

  11. Look. Enough with Lex now. Make him a secondary villain or something, not the lead villain. I say bring in brainiac or darkseit. And as for the new costume, Superman looks pretty queer.

  12. Well for one thing, all of the fan rumors are not doing the movie any justice. On the other hand, this new introduction to Superman seems be the perfect approach that Superman deserves. Superman has really been watered down a lot, putting him on the same level as characters such as Batman and Green Arrow who great, but only human. Superman not being human is what actually puts him on a high plane anyway. If anyone would do the research they would see that aside from his physical powers, he possesses a
superior wealth of intellect and a vast knowledge of the universe. After all, hi father Jor-El was Krpton’s planetary
scienBatman can even phathom. He very knowledgeable

  13. well, for all the fans and enemies out there: Superman is not supposed to be based on his type of costume or his appearance. The point of him is what he believes in and what he does with his powers to help man kind. So, even though he is a fictional character, there are young children who actually believe in him. Don’t torture their minds over stupid battles over a costume or about the new movie.

  14. Guess what I just thought of.. What if brainiac merged with Darkseid?! O_O

  15. I hope they pleasantly surprise everyone and just bring Darkseid in to the end of this movie, and onto Part 2. Let Brainiac team up with Lex in Part 3
