Rumor Patrol: ‘Superman: Man of Steel’ Villains are General Lane & Metallo

superman versus metallo in secret origin Rumor Patrol: Superman: Man of Steel Villains are General Lane & Metallo

The closest to official news regarding Superman: Man of Steel’s plot has been a foreword written by screenwriter David Goyer for the hardcover edition of Superman: Secret Origin. In that foreword, Goyer stated that he was directly influenced by Geoff John’s acclaimed comic book, which detailed Superman’s origin from junior high to being hired by The Daily Planet.

Now, there’s a rumor going around the Internet – insert bitter skepticism here – that Man of Steel’s villains will be General Lane (Lois Lane’s father) and the cybernetic Metallo, whose secret weapon is his heart: A big piece of kryptonite that powers his suit, keeps his barely human body alive, and renders Superman pained and useless.

According to Movienewz’s source:

General Sam Lane, the father of Lois Lane, is a central figure in director Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot. This really is, as Zack described in several interviews about the film, a “real world” Superman. I’m told that when Superman arrives on the scene, people don’t know what to think. He’s an alien from another planet. What are his real intentions? He’s not human and that scares a lot of people. Here’s a guy who can fly, see through walls, is bullet proof, and can lift a tank. The military views him as a potential threat to national security. They find kryptonite, pieces of his home planet, and discover its radioactive elements can be harnessed as a near unlimited source of power, both literally and figuratively. It’s a brand new form of energy that is secretly developed by the government. The military, under the direction of General Sam Lane, uses kryptonite to power an experimental cyborg super soldier named Metallo. He’s ultimately exploited as a weapon against Superman.

Save for the lack of Lex Luthor, this actually sounds exactly like Superman: Secret Origin. In that story, Lois Lane’s father, General Lane, hates and wants to stop Superman because of his super alien powers or something. (If you’ve seen either of the Hulk movies, he’s a lot like General Ross played by Sam Elliot and William Hurt, respectively.) Metallo has had many an origin throughout comic book history, but only in Secret Origin was he Sergeant John Corben, an unpleasant soldier in Lane’s army – and Lane’s surrogate son – who has long had the hots for Lois Lane.

superman versus metallo in geoff johns secret origin Rumor Patrol: Superman: Man of Steel Villains are General Lane & Metallo

Does this so-called plot revelation’s uncanny resemblance to Secret Origin – an admitted inspiration for the Superman: Man of Steel – lend credence to it being the genuine article? Or is it the other way around – did this so-called “source” for this story know about the aforementioned inspiration and concoct a story based around it? Alas, we’ll have to wait for more official info before we know one way or the other.

Truth be told, Geoff John’s Superman: Secret Origin was a great book, so Zack Snyder and company could do far worse with regard to source material. That said, while Metallo is a fairly formidable foe for Superman (you know, twenty or so minutes of formidability), as the main villain for the entirety of a Superman film, I can’t help but assume he’d be weak sauce.

What do you guys think? Would you be satisfied with General Lane and Metallo as the villains in Man of Steel or would you prefer to see some heavier hitters?

Superman: Man of Steel hits theaters December 2012.

  1. This is very similar to what I thought Man of Steel would turn out to be, except General Lane creates Metallo instead of Luthor. Im all for this if its true, but I still think that it needs a better main villain. I think they should throw Zod in as the main baddy and you could have a three way fight between him, Supes, and Metallo.

  2. Not a bad idea with the armed forces being scared or freaked out by him thanks for finally getting more realistic

  3. I hate the idea of General Lane. Even if it’s a canon story it just feels too much like the Hulk to really set itself apart, especially since Hulk got two movies both of which we had to put up with a demented father in power.

The father aside the battlesuit is another issue. Iron Man 1 & 2 pretty much beat a dead horse with it. We had the villain of each movie, different guys, go and build himself a huge battlesuit to defeat the hero, twice.

I much prefer the cyborg Corbon and Lex story from the Animated Series. Say what you will, but in big screen with the right writing, direction, and effects it’s a fresh story for today after the last hero movies that have been out with a nice twist showing how manipulative Luthor can be to get what he wants.

    • Agree, no more metal bad guys.

  4. I think they can include Brainiac and Lex in this film. Metallo and General Lane doesn’t have to be the main villains.

Such as when strange alien robots start falling from the sky, Superman destroys some of it. Sam Lane confiscates the technology and retools it with the help of Lex Luthor and build a battle suit to combat Superman leading towards John Corben, who has been trying to date Lois, wearing the suit to get rid of Superman cause he believes thats what standing in the way of dating Lois. When Superman and Corben brawl, Corben accidentally causes in explosion that nearly destroys him. With more technology, Lane and Luthor rebuild John Corben with the same metal components and synthetic skin thus the birth of Metallo.

During all that, when Superman is doing his soul search he encounters Brainiac who appears as a survivor of Krypton and tries to tell Superman who he is. In reality he is actually there to scan the earth of all it’s knowledge and eliminate the source.

All of that tied together would be a good reboot and it strays away from the Hulk.

  5. Please be truuuuuue!!!!. I agree. Saw suckerpunch & it was awesome!!!!. I think snyder will deliver an epic superman film mixed with suckerpunch action & something we’ve never seen before. As for villians. Metallo. Zod. & Ursa.

  6. THIS IS THE PLOT TO THE INCREDIBLE HULK MOVIE. You can pacify comic nerds by saying, “No, no, no. This is an adaptation of comic book ‘xyz’”, but mainstream moviegoers don’t know or care about that. What mainstream moviegoers know is that they just saw this movie in the INCREDIBLE HULK. To them it’ll be “OMG, Snyder is ripping off the Incredible Hulk!”

If this is true, MOS will be a disaster at the box office. It will become a punchline of a joke, like SUCKER PUNCH. Everyone will mock it, but not pay to see it, because they already “know” that it is a stupid “ripoff” or another superhero movie.

omg. It is sinking in to me that it is possible this reboot could disastrously crater and destroy the Superman franchise. Before, I thought “Well, at worse, it could under-perform financially, but be a respectable but dull misfire.” Now, I realize that it could be an epic catastrophe.

    • edit:

because they already “know” that it is a stupid “ripoff” OF another superhero movie.

    • well played my friend. could not be more true, comic fans don’t make the money for studios on these movies, the general mass audience does. a movie for comic nerds will fail, just check watchmen’s box office returns, not to mention public opinion from joe moviegoer.

  7. Just like most here my first thoughts where how similar it sounds to TIH. And that’s why I choose not to believe the rumors of how the plot will unfold. It’s not that far of a stretch to think that they can use the same villans as the novel but not use them in the same way. And lets not forget Batman Begins featured villians that where not known to most outside of the comic world and I don’t remember many complaining after that.

  8. I love how fanboys go all nuts and the movie has not started filming yet. Chill everyone just chill. Snyer/Nolan/Superman no worries!

  9. It’s a rumor relax ppl. I ain’t believing anything unless it comes from Snyder’s or Johns’ mouths lol. I would expect a more intellectual villain in addition Metallo too.

    • *in addition to

  10. The “villain” is a certain Gotham native who will wear special armor to combat Supes. The (short) Superman film will be a cliffhanger that continues into Batman 3.

  11. Wow, talk about L A M E. It’s like they took The Incredible Hulk storyline and mashed it together with The Iron Man storyline to come up with this.

I’ve had my fill of superheroes getting attacked by robots/cyborgs/mechs thank you very much. I’m also a bit tired of falling back on Kryptonite to knock him down to size. Could we move on to something that would be a REAL challenge for a being that can lift over 100 tons and is nigh invulnerable?

Now don’t get me wrong, I like Metallo but not as the main villain in an attempt to re-energize the franchise. We need a BIG villain imho to bring back the wow factor.

I think I would even prefer Zod and flunkies over this rumor (as long as the end doesn’t entail using a molecular re-arranger to make them Earth normal and Supes doesn’t throw cellophane entangles ;) ) Plus I thought Ursa was already cast and they were looking for Zod?

  12. hmmm looks kool

  13. I like the idea of Metallo. Bring me something new and sfx worthy of the big screen.

  14. I say we keep Lois Lane’s family out of this, and make the right decision not fit her Father being the villain in this movie. He suppose to get along with Clark Kent personally.

    • I have nothing against introducing Lois Lane’s father to the story, but not as a villain! Gosh, that’s too much!

      • Sam Lane as a villain makes sense, he is a military man, superman is a one man military.

        • I don’t say it doesn’t make sense, just that it will IMO destroy the movie.

  15. Sheesh I’ll take a one eyed postal worker with mental powers over Lex Luthor.

    Bring it!

  16. its going to come off as a bit odd to have Lane as the bad guy considering that Lane is actually a good guy on the tv show and that Slade Wilson, also a military figure on the show was the bad guy instead of Lane this past season..I really am hoping that this film comes off well but with 10 seasons of Superman origin mythos to play with-it seems odd to totally ignore it..even with totally different actors..They better do well with this-or start from scratch again, but this time re-hire those Smallville actors.

  17. Lois Lane’s father?
That can only go wrong… for the movie.
Snyder can put something like this in his 2nd movie of Superman (if it ever comes to this) but definitely after establishing his, as he called it “a more real” superman character first…
At the beginnig he have to introduce “his” characters and their relations, and the story between Lois and Clark/Superman is already complicated enough not to have to add a villain father to it (a slight Spiderman – Green Goblin reference?)
This fact will make the movie more difficult to follow and indicates that we will have to focus only on action as there won’t be much more depth and captivating story in this movie…
    What a pity.

  18. It sounds OKAY! But why not use a a more powerful villian. I realize there is a budget and only so much one can do but, COME ON!!! Its super man heat vision, cold breath, super speed power of flight can possibly turn back time with super flight speed! And what do you give him a guy with a rock in his chest. He can shoot it out from 300 yards with heat vision. I guess is that its done and this falls on deaf ears but you want to make money you have to spend it. Look how kick ass Batman was 1 old villian (Joker) who was awesome then you give us Scarecrow i mean it was great use money and characters for Batman. Superman needs someone to match him make the fans leave sayign damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Best superman ever, not ehhh it was ok This is Superman do it right! You want Lex bring in him as a secondary villian i’m sure Supes can handle more than one bad guy….

  19. Ok this is my first time posting hear and i would like to share my thoughts on this rumor as i’m an avid superman fan. Goyer, Zach, and Chris MUST know that fans want to see superman go toe to toe with someone who can really give superman a run for his money. Im sorry but if Metallo is the main villan then this movie is going to be an EPIC fail. Metallo poses no real threat to superman and fans no this and so should Goyer, Zack and Chris. Now if they add another villan to the mix lets says Brainiac then we might have something special, but one thing for sure is, Metallo shouldnt be the main villan. Having General Lane in this isnt a bad idea but Zach has to be carefull how he plays this because as we all know this could end up being alot like Hulk and ultimatly destoy the movie regardless of what villan you have in the flick.

  20. @ Paul

I agree with ya. Im a big Superman fan, but Metallo isn’t one of my top favorite Superman villains. Take away the kryptonite & he’s nothin but a metal paper weight for Superman to through punches at. I agree about Snyder being careful about having Gen. Lane in the film as he intends cause id hate for the Superman film to be like another comic book character’s films.

  21. is this rumor still legit, with the recent announcement of Michael Shannon playing Gen. Zod? if it is, then Gen. Lane, Gen. Zod AND Metallo will be Supes’ opponents. And this is supposed to be only the FIRST installment of a brand new beginning??? WOW..!! this could end up either way. Awesome or horrible.

first of all having more than one baddie is quite challenging for a first movie, but THREE!!! for me the whole Gen. Lane thing is too much like The Hulk’s Gen. Ross and not sure if it’s a good idea. although, i gotta point out that this idea was also used before Superman: Secret Origin, in Marvel’s new Squadron Supreme, where Hyperion (their version of Superman) is also an alien infant stranded on earth. but, the twist is the gov’t takes control of him and “creating” the smallville type of environment for the child until he’s all grown up. once he’s old enough he’s to be employed to do the gov’t’s bidding. The person embodying the gov’t is this old looking general who would be a lot like what this role of Gen. Lane will be playing.
So, i’m not too sure if this Lois Lane’s dad biz will work for Superman or if it should even be used. That would definitely make the Lois Lane character too much like a copy of Marvel’s Betty Ross, which is pretty ironic, considering the oldest, most iconic super hero character would be imitating a character modeled after him in some capacity, created decades later.

  22. i say, save General Lane and Metalo for Man of Steel 2, have Sam Elliot or William Hurt as General Lane and Josh Lucas as John Corban, /Metallo

    • No, don’t cast either of those two. They both already played General Ross in the Hulk movies, why would they bring in someone who basically would be playing the same character in a different superhero movie?
