Michael Shannon On Zod in ‘Man of Steel’; Confirms Mo-Cap Costume

Published 4 years ago by , Updated February 15th, 2014 at 8:46 pm,

If you’ve seen actor Michael Shannon at work – his Academy Award-nominated role in Revolutionary Road, or his breakout role on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire - you can probably tell that he’s the type of performer who cares more about getting immersed in his process, rather than giving interviews about his process.

Of course, ever since he accepted the role of the villainous General Zod in Man of Steel, Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman reboot, public exposure has been an expanding area of Shannon’s career.

MTV recently got to sit down with the actor (who will be starring in the upcoming psychological drama Take Shelter), to talk about playing the villain in a blockbuster comic book movie – specifically a villain who has already been made famous onscreen by acting icon Terrence Stamp, in Richard Donner’s 1980 film, Superman II. Check out what Shannon had to say about the legacy of Zod, and what he’ll be bringing to the role:

Well I’m not going to impersonate Terrence Stamp – I’m mean I’m not going to have a British accent, or anything. I’m still, like, getting my foot into the pool, you know? I just started working on it, and… all I can say is it’s very well-written and there are a lot of great opportunities to reinvent it for myself. The challenge is for me to do that. There’s nothing holding me back, and I think they’re counting on me to give my interpretation, so I’ll do the best I can…being a general – to me that is such a fascinating kind of iconoclastic character. I can’t imagine being a sergeant, let alone a general. He’s in charge of the entire military of Krypton, so that’s going to take every little shred of imagination that I have. So it’s a good challenge because it’s a big distance to have to go.

Shannon no doubt has the same skill to own this role – much the same way that, once upon a time, another skilled actor/rising star named Heath Ledger came along and snatched the iconic role of The Joker from out under Jack Nicholson. However, while quality of acting is a very important topic, there’s something that fanboys and girls get even more excited about – and that’s costume talk!

Previously we posted some Man of Steel set pics that depicted Superman (Henry Cavill), General Swanwick (Harry Lennix) and what looked to be General Zod (Shannon), all on set in costume, with Lennix and the assumed Shannon both wearing motion-capture suits. This small paparazzi shot then sparked endless debate about why Lennix and Shannon’s characters would need mo-cap suits. Our guess was that Gen. Swanwick will wear some version of the Metallo armor featured in Superman: Secret Origin, while Shannon might don the Gen. Zod armor depicted in more recent Superman comics (see below).

Will Shannon be wearing the Zod Armor?

In an interview with Moviefone Shannon confirmed one thing: despite doubts from some online fans, it is indeed him we saw in that mo-cap suit.

Said the actor:

“[I]t’s funny because when I met with Zack we were talking about it before it started and he mentioned that there was going to be a lot of CGI… I said, ‘Just don’t make me wear one of those silly suits.’ He said, ‘Oh, yeah, don’t worry, I know exactly what you’re talking about.’ I was like, ‘It’s going to be really hard for me to be intimidating if I have to wear one of those silly suits.’ He said, ‘I totally understand.’ Then I showed up and he’s like, ‘Dude, I swear to God, it’s going to be so badass when we’re done. Trust me, it’s going to be wicked.’”

If Shannon’s costume is some version of the Zod armor, then it indeed will be wicked, this will NOT be your daddy’s General Zod, and (at least in terms of action) we will likely be in for one epic Superman movie. Finally.

The only thing I’ll personally add: I hope the CGI costumes in this film are met with more love than those in Green Lantern - that other DC Movie that followed the CGI costume route…straight to a dead end.

We’ll keep tabs on the development of Man of Steel, but let us know your thoughts about Shannon, mo-cap costumes, and anything else Superman related in the comment section below.

Man of Steel will be in theaters on June 14, 2013

  1. I don’t know if anyone is interested but I’m currently writing a Superman Spec script right now, focusing on something completely different than we’ve ever seen and if Zach Snyder does it in these films I’ll have a meltdown lol.

    • @ Steve:
I’ve been there, except nothing I write could ever be taken seriously by anyone but me. I’m a novice… But yeah, it’s funny when you spend a long time developing an idea, and then you see that someone else does it before you get the chance to. Best of luck with you and your plans for your script.

      To everyone:
I’m a marvel fan mostly, but I do like good fiction, regardless of who wrote it or where it’s from. No need to pick sides. Sorry if others have been doing that, but anyway, I think this looks promising. None of the set pics have blown me away really but I love the suit. Love it. That mo-cap thing has me intrigued. Snyder surrounds himself with artists that have very interesting styles. The over all presentation of a Snyder film is usually very cool visually at least. So, I’m not worried about Zod having CG elements to his suit.

  2. with everybody out there so distracted with the visual portion of the film, will we be hearing the already iconic theme to the Superman movies, or a new tune?

    • Daniel, bro. This is all NEW! New actors, new and modern Kryptonian Super Suit, new direction, NEW APPROACH. A New Superman for OUR TIME. Modern. Majestic. So, a new theme will accompany MAN OF STEEL. It’s time to move forward. It’s the 21st century. We belong to Superman. Kneel before Zod! In SNYDER We TRUST!!!

      • “All new”? You mean, we’ve never seen Superman’s origins played out on screen? We’ve never seen him take on Zod and Foara (she’s the same character as Ursla)?

This movie is turning into a remake of the first film, with aspects of Superman 2 thrown in. Snyder maybe great with visuals, but sucks with story.

        • Except that was 30 years ago. That’s enough time for a reboot.

  3. I feel that hollywood needs to stop. They have beaten this dead horse excessively. I do agree that they should bring in new villans & take the mythology forward,if they are to keep on making superman flicks. Do something fresh in terms of story & depth. It is lame that they keep rehashing the same ol’ story, instead of taking a chance. Most of those back in the day movies were good because in those days, hollywood took risks instead of always going the safe route. Show the audience something that we are not familiar with already & moviegoers will be more likely to feel thoroughly entertained.

  4. erik i think it is great that you wake up and eat bowls of unicorn diaria. zack snyder has created 3 of the worst movies i have ever seen. 300…wow. watchman…blue weeners. sucker punch…low blow. MAN OF STEEL will solidify zack snyder and the new m. night shamalamadingdong.

  5. zack snyder = m. night shamalama.

  6. these comments make a good read. too bad 95% of us will go see this heap regardless of how poor or great of a film it will be. i’m upset on many levels regarding this future misfire. i do think there is one company that could do a killer superman flick…but wb would never give it up to that mouse. :)

  7. Crushingly disappointing that we get stuck with Zod as the villain. But so much is so wrong with this movie, so what is one more disappointment?

  8. Would be great if people were more positive. Superman: Man of Steel has to be better than all the cheesy Superman movies before it. I guess some people just love Gene Hackman in his curly wig and can’t give it up…

I guess some people just love the kid saying in Superman II, Please don’t hurt my daddy… Geez give me a break… We are finally going to get a Superman that kicks ass…

    • Agreed!!!

  9. ^ We will see after this movie comes and is forgotten.

    • coming soon? yes
      forgotten? doubt it

  10. This is good news. I think Snyder can pull this off. Always have.

And I will never understand the Green Lantern hate. That suit was awesome and I dont care who disagrees. :)
