Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have released the first image of Henry Cavill as Superman in Zack Snyder’s reboot film, Man of Steel. This comes on the heels of images of Cavill sporting “Man of Steel hair” and describing how it felt to wear the Superman suit.

But will fans embrace this version of Superman? Or will they nitpick the suit, the look of the actor, and the overall tone of Snyder’s film to death, based on this one image?

In my experience working on the Interweb, it will most likely be the latter. But I digress.

Snyder’s film will explore Clark Kent’s early days and his transition into becoming the world’s greatest superhero. While the script by and story from David S. Goyer and Chris Nolan have been kept secret, rumor points to several popular Superman storylines (“Secret Origin“, “Superman: Birthright“) having a direct influence on this reboot film.

As for the cast of the film: A Warner Bros. Press release confirms a lot of the casting we already knew about ;-):

The film stars three-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams (“The Fighter”) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar® nominee Laurence Fishburne (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as her editor-in-chief, Perry White.  Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar® nominee Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”) and Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner (“Dances with Wolves”).

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”), and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue.  Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”).

Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.

The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer, from a story by Goyer and Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics.

As for this image: It reveals the Superman suit which will be used in Snyder’s film, how Henry Cavill looks in the role, and tries to play up the physics of a Superman world. Check it out below:

Already fans are picking apart everything from the look of the suit (“It’s like he got it from the Nike store!”) to the length of the cape, to the hairdo, to the expression on Cavill’s face (too much scowl, not enough…what? Smiles?).

For our part, the suit looks pretty good. Iconic, yet modern, in the vein of the upcoming rebooted comic book version of Superman. This picture also does a good job of depicting the fact that Superman is a super-strong being, which is an aspect of the character Snyder has said he wants to focus on. This should be good news for all of you out there who have been wishing for an epic, building-leaping, metal-crushing, high-flying Superman flick. You want Superman action, this image (if it’s a hint of things to come) is Superman in action.

As for the hairstyle – we’re not salon stylists, but it does make sense that as Superman he would have a hairstyle that was totally different, thereby distancing his superhero self from his mild-mannered alter-ego. The fact that Clark and Superman both had the relative same hairstyle in the comics never really made sense to me (a pair of glasses can’t disguise things that well).

Take a look at Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman:

How do you guys feel about Cavill’s look as Clark Kent/Superman?

Superman: Man of Steel will be in theaters on June 14, 2013.

  1. I remember how disappointed I was when I first saw the SR suit. This one definately has a better look. The spidey-spots are weird but i dont really care. Maybe its some kind of Kryptonian solar absorbsion system. (Lame theory I know) But it still looks awesome. I really hope they use graphics similar to the ones they used in SR though. The plane scene was epic and when supes caught that sign with the company’s name on it during the earthquake…awesome.

  2. It exceeds my expectations.
    Superman looks lethal and regal.

Cavill is convincing and off to a flying start.

  3. I actually kinda like the look. Reminds me a little of the old Fleischer cartoons. I always disliked that damn spitcurl though. Nobody has hair like that naturally. Not even an alien :)

  4. “The fact that Clark and Superman both had the relative same hairstyle in the comics never really made sense to me (a pair of glasses can’t disguise things that well).”

Actually in the comics, most of the time (but not always) Clark Kent’s hair was always the slick “journalist” look, Superman’s hair was the more ruffled look with the curl. I have no idea why they’ve completely reversed it in this case.

As for the photo itself, I like everything about it but Cavill’s face. It just doesn’t sell me. Reeve’s worked. So did Dean’s. Routh’s was close enough that it worked. Cavill is just a little too different for my tastes. It’s like when I try to draw Superman’s faces, it comes out several different ways, and I try to get it closer to that iconic Superman face. The other faces look like other people entirely. That’s how I feel about Cavill there.

And since the photo’ll likely get enough nit-picking from others without any input from me, I’ll stop here.

    • Snyder reversed the hair from the comic books because a few obsessive idiots who congregate at Superhero Hype went on, and on, and on about how the comics got it all wrong, and it must be reversed. Since Snyder is a complete lemming, he caved to that small puddle and the minnows that swim there.

  5. The picture looks great. It’s the best promotion for the movie I’ve seen\heard\read yet.

  6. WOW !…just to see that image the movie will ROCK, I can feel it

    • I agree. I understand what people could dislike so far, but none of the complaints bother me at all. I’m actually really liking how this is turning out. IMO, there’s not enough info to start judging.

  7. Red underwear haters rejoice. I zoomed in on his crotch and it’s the same blue as the rest of the uniform. Overall it looks pretty good to me. Definitely better than the suit in SR. I still like the original Christopher Reeves suit best but this one could win me over.

    • im sorry u lost me at “i zoomed in on his crotch”…

      • Hah, yeah I know. I couldn’t help myself but have a little fun with the wording.

      • ^ LOL thats what i was thinking too.

    • I hope you didn’t lick your monitor. :P

    • Haha I did the same thing… Don’t feel bad. XD I even cropped shots of it to tell if there was any red.

  8. All other Superman movies will pale in comparison… No cheese in this one, thank you Snyder and Nolan! In Nolan we trust! Eat it fanboys!

    • You can tell all that from just ONE picture? That is just as silly as the people preaching how it’s going to suck based on the picture.

      • I saw one picture of Sucker Punch, and I could tell, instantly, it would be the awesomest. :D

        • Pity, then, that it wasn’t, eh?

      • He was just waiting for the first image from Man of Steel, whatever that image would be, so he could post that statement. It has no bearing on the actual image itself. He just really wants to believe in the film.

      • oh man,all those pessimists, this looks totally awesome.

        • oh man, all those studio plants, this look weak

    • Fanboys?? Aren’t “fanboys” the ones who thank directors and producers, kiss their a$$es, and say how awesome a movie is going to be after seeing only one picture and not seeing the movie yet??

      • That’s film fanboys. I believe he’s talking about comic book fanboys, some of whom don’t believe any film that deviates from the comics will be any good.

  9. Maybe the texture of the new S will help with aerodynamics when he throws it Saran wrap style….
Overall not bad, it’s growing on me. Can’t wait to see the movie! Superman rules.

  10. Maybe the texture of the new S will help with aerodynamics when he throws it Saran wrap style….Overall not bad, it’s growing on me. Can’t wait to see the movie! Superman rules.

  11. Not your grandpas Superman for sure, I like it!

    • Looks more like Singer’s Superman. Pass.

  12. I feel that the feeling of this movie compared to the old Superman films will be something like Star Trek (2009) to the old Star Trek films. Different, yet invited. BUT, I’ve only seen 3 pictures and a list of cast members so far.

  13. He looks like Adrian Pasdar on the picture to the left. And it looks like the got the hair styles for Clark Kent and Superman backwards. Hate the suit and dislike most of the casting. At least i have the Superman Anthology on Blu Ray!

  14. Kinda looks like the S shield from the 30′s and he kinda looks like Christian Slater in his Superman outfit.

    • i agree with you on that one but if you’re a true superman fan you gotta go see it. it might be better than you think

      • Being a true Superman fan means not rewarding sludge with his name slapped on it.

        • Hmmm, full of your own importance, aren’t you?

kal-el may be exceedingly enthusiastic, but he IS, at least, trying to maintain an atmosphere hopefulness about a subject most of those on this thread at least CLAIM to love.

          Try it…

  15. Spidey sense…Tingling!

  16. I am excited by w hat I see and can’t wait for more.

  17. Can someone please photoshop Cavill’s head off that and relace it with Reeves/Routh/Welling or heck even Cain? He just looks…stupid… Oh and considering so many people hate his stupid hair, maybe they’re on to something? And the amount of big name grabbing they’ve done doesn’t actually make a film better. Oh and Russell Crowe? Seriously? He’s a egotistical abusive bully. I mean why not cast another abusive bully like Christian Bale as Batman? Oh wait…

  18. I just love how people judge actors by their personal lives these days and not their performances. Like old Hollywood stars were saints??
    I hope this movie ROCKS!

  19. Suit and hair look great! My only complaint is the script of the movie. More specifically the whole “early days and transitioning” part. I know it had nothing to do with this movie and storyline. And even though i loved the show to death we have already beat the crap out of “early days and transitioning” with Smallvile. But i guess since this movie is a franchise reboot of sorts we have to touch on him growing up and out atleast (if only) a little bit. Anyway, Good luck with the film and make us proud!

  20. Yes!!

  21. Ok so like somebody previously said “gritty” isn’t better. And I agree I’d love to see Supe come into the mainstream again back when Christopher Reeves did it. But Cavill from the looks doesn’t being the boy scout attitude that Superman is. Yes Superman is a powerful being but he’s a guy you can believe in, that you know that would always be there for you in peril. And Cavill doesn’t display that attitude or demeanor that’d he’d even give a care about a random parkstroller. He looks like an uncaring person to put it likely. I’m all for new blood but this new blood is “not” what is needed. And Snyder as a director? Yes all should have a chance but his only claim to fame is 300. And he’s not going to have that success with this film. Every Superhero now these days needs the “Nolan” treatment. Just because you make it “serious” and “gritty” doesn’t mean a guaranteed success. Stick to the subject matter Hollywood. Afterall that’s what made the stories successful not your ignorant perception of such.

  22. Ok so like somebody previously said “gritty” isn’t better. And I agree I’d love to see Supe come into the mainstream again back when Christopher Reeves did it. But Cavill from the looks doesn’t bring the boy scout attitude that Superman is.

    • You can tell that from 1 picture wow, you should be an artist

      • The marketers wanted to send a message. Well it was received. Can’t blame people for not liking the message.

  23. Give me a break. More reason not see it. Doesn’t look like Superman imo unless you’re wanting to make a live-action dark novel film of the character. If the costume was any darker by the slightest, it would be perfect for Bizarro to wear, actually it already is, & if they cgi effect to Cavill’s face, he’d look like the perfect Bizarro on film. Atlest the S design looks the same as in Christopher Reeve’s films. Cape imo is too long. Anyways, Superman looks little too dark imo.

    • I agree 100%

  24. When did Clark Kent become a pretty boy with a tinge of douche? This is gearing up to be one big turd. Zack The Hack is a one trick pony.

    • i have got a last question, one of the best moments and scenes in syngers smr,was the deleted scene i watched on screenrant last weak.i really liked the atmosphere and the suit b.routh was wearing. i think it was a big mistake that it wasn`t shown on the big screen. for me sometimes are a little scenes in my favorite movies, the reason why i like them so much.

  25. I’m just happy that he’s (Snyder) is doing what he wants unlike the others who keep force feeding us Christopher Reeves Look alikes that we start to all think that Superman has to look like Chris Reeves. Superman isn’t a boyscout, he doesn’t fly around smiling, kissing babies and waving at random people, he is arguably the strongest character in the DC world, so of course when he gets pissed he gets angry as hell. I like this , it looks like the style of Watchmen

    • Tim umm actually that’s exactly what Superman is.

Thanks for proving you know nothing about him.

It’s one thing to say that’s not what you want him to be, but you can’t just pretend like he isn’t what has been in the comics for decades. Either you’ve never read a Superman comic or you simply don’t pay attention when you read them. Superman is the boy scout. In fact other characters specifically call him a boy scout because he is one. He is the hero of all heroes. A belief in hope. He is the symbol of brightness and the hope. He isn’t an angry strong beast like the Hulk.

      • He isnt a boy scout in EVERY book. Dont be so quick to judge. After all, this is FICTION. Superman isn’t real (I know, its sad).

      • Actually, please, be quicker to judge. When someone lists all the major characteristics of someone, and says “it’s not like he’s any of THOSE things,” that person should be corrected as quickly as possible.

It’s like saying “It’s not like Albert Einstein was good with physics, and terrible with math, and was a hit with the ladies” when all of those things are actually true.

        • So you’re saying Superman Flies around smiling, kissing babies, and waving at random people in the comics? Hmm. I must have missed those ones.

      • No wonder I can’t take superman seriously, I mean not only does he use his underwear the wrong way, but he’s so damn powerful yet he never uses those powers, why don’t they just make something like Ang Lee’s Hulk for Superman

      • Actually in the first comics Supes wasn’t a boyscout @ all! He destroyed an entire neighborhood bc of the slum lords mistreatment of their poor tenants! He told the people 2 leave, he destroyed it and made them rebuild it! He also went up against two countries that were @ war forcing their leaders to fight one on one to end the conflict! He started out as a bit of a thorn in the side of the US government, Fighting for social change! It wasn’t till WW2 that he adopted the truth, justice and the American way! B4 that his motto was just Truth and Justice! So maybe u need 2 UP UP and Away your knowledge of superman?

        • Ummm ACTUALLY we are discussing what Superman IS. Meaning Currently?

They changed him during world war 2? Oh so you mean in like the 1940′s ? I forget what date is it now? Fairly certain for something to be current it had to have been with in at least the last 70 years.

Talk about the very limited number of issues Superman was something else over 80s years ago all you want, but it adds nothing to the conversation. Not only is it old and in the minority of issues in the grand scheme of things, but it’s also not CONTINUITY. That word is important. Continuity is what Superman is OFFICIALLY. Continuity has changed a lot in the last 70 years. Can you guess though what the few things with in Superman continuity to not change in the last 70 years are ? Boy Scout? Yea. Truth Justice and American way? Yea.

Maybe you need to understand what the word is means. While you are at it look up the term was means and add Outdated to that list. You can define the Superman character by a limited number of comics that came out 80 years ago.

So maybe you need to up up and away your knowledge of everything?

Also it’s spelled YOU not U and acceptable words are to, too or two not 2.

I don’t mind typos they happen, but those are not typos those are just you being lazy and thinking it’s cool. Even when I’m typing on my phone 90% of the time I still type of you rather than U. Granted that’s only 90% of the time, but 100% of the time I’d never use 2 in place of to or too. That’s just sad. It’s one thing to make a honest typo or mistake what you just did is another.

Still the topic is what Superman is. You have offered no relevant argument. Try again? or not that’s 2…. See what I did there?

          • Of course there are changes! I’m just saying that Supes started out as a bit of a rebel! Obviously he’s not considered that anymore but every once in a while the old becomes new again! If their trying TO get away from the Donner films, as they should! Why not make him a little bit more like the original Superman! I can spell just fine thank YOU very much! Its just faster that way! Faster then a speeding bullet! LOL! That means laugh out loud in case u need TO be caught up on what IS today and not what WAS! See what I did there? I think its very relavant what Supes actually started out as! Its just my opinion! I don’t think the film industry could give TWO shakes about the comics continuity! I don’t see anywhere in the thread where anyone says “We’re talking about what Superman is now” You don’t know what he is now, concerning this film, anyway! I was simply stating that Supes didn’t start out that way! Nothing personal! No need to be a jerk about it!

          • Chill mate, so you want a Superman movie akin to, like the other poster said, Ang Lee’s Hulk?…leave the patriotism to Captain America. And besides didn’t Superman revoke his American Citizenship?, I don’t blame him, I mean with a trillion dollar debt that america would most likely never pay back in many lifetimes, I say get out. So you want to completely forget the past?, very, very disrespectful

            • What on earth does that have to do with Ang Lee’s Hulk?

Also how about you chill with the America bashing. This is a topic about Superman and we don’t need your blame America BS here.

I don’t want to forget the past at all. DC made the decision to forget the past. They decided who Superman has been for the last 70 years. They decided that everything that happened 80 years ago wasn’t really Superman. We are discussing who Superman is not what a different version of him did in an alternate time line.

Your one to talk about being disrespectful since you insulted an entire country.

  26. Things I like,

    S-shield looks the right size
The cape and shield look quite bright when compare with SR
    Boots look cool
    Cavill looks quite imposing

    Things I’m not keen on,

The blues are too muted for my tastes
His hair while looking much more natural than the stiff ‘do from SR (Bryan Singer seems to have a habit of this, his Wolverine looked like he used a gallon of hairspray) I would have preferred a style similar to Tom Welling’s recent Smallville but with the S-curl

There’s plenty to like from the pic but you simply cannot please everyone.

I’m not going to say if I like Cavill or not because I haven’t seen him in anything however in all honesty he does look like a Superman.

I look forward to seeing more.

  27. I had intended on seeing this simply cuz its a comic/superhero film and the cast sounded interesting plus i think Snyders visual style is sick, however im not the biggest Supes fan, dont get me wrong i enjoy the character especially when teamed up with Batman (Public Enemies is the shiznit) but hes just not in my top 5 or even 10. Not to mention the sour taste the previous Superman movies have left in my mouth. Superman 1 and 2 are great flicks for sure but are painfully dated, 3 and 4 are ridiculous and SR was just uninteresting, even SUpes himself was dull in the film. This single picture, however silly this may seem has just skyrocketed this film to one of my most anticipated movies of the next few years. Like i said earlier google pics of SUperman and youll find more intense, heated scowls than you will smiles, im not sure where you guys are getting this notion that Superman is all smiles and good deeds unless from Christopher Reeves portrayal. Hes a good man with a good heart but hes also a warrior who can kick ass with the best of them. Better even. Brandon Routh looked nothing like Superman in the face whatsoever, he looks like Tom Cruises little brother. This man is SUperman and i eagerly await this film and hope and pray it doesnt let me down.

  28. I think the image is perfect!
It show both Supermans strength and more importanly, Superman restraint.

  29. i did not like the texture on the costume, but everything else is fine. the blue looks too dark but this is because the image is less saturated ithink the blue and red is fine, but please less texture he is looking like he is wearing a bluewashed lizzard costume.

    • Yes, I’m sure they are going to stop production to change that, way to go Fanboy!
