Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have released the first image of Henry Cavill as Superman in Zack Snyder’s reboot film, Man of Steel. This comes on the heels of images of Cavill sporting “Man of Steel hair” and describing how it felt to wear the Superman suit.

But will fans embrace this version of Superman? Or will they nitpick the suit, the look of the actor, and the overall tone of Snyder’s film to death, based on this one image?

In my experience working on the Interweb, it will most likely be the latter. But I digress.

Snyder’s film will explore Clark Kent’s early days and his transition into becoming the world’s greatest superhero. While the script by and story from David S. Goyer and Chris Nolan have been kept secret, rumor points to several popular Superman storylines (“Secret Origin“, “Superman: Birthright“) having a direct influence on this reboot film.

As for the cast of the film: A Warner Bros. Press release confirms a lot of the casting we already knew about ;-):

The film stars three-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams (“The Fighter”) as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar® nominee Laurence Fishburne (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as her editor-in-chief, Perry White.  Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar® nominee Diane Lane (“Unfaithful”) and Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner (“Dances with Wolves”).

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road”), and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue.  Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”).

Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.

The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer, from a story by Goyer and Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics.

As for this image: It reveals the Superman suit which will be used in Snyder’s film, how Henry Cavill looks in the role, and tries to play up the physics of a Superman world. Check it out below:

Already fans are picking apart everything from the look of the suit (“It’s like he got it from the Nike store!”) to the length of the cape, to the hairdo, to the expression on Cavill’s face (too much scowl, not enough…what? Smiles?).

For our part, the suit looks pretty good. Iconic, yet modern, in the vein of the upcoming rebooted comic book version of Superman. This picture also does a good job of depicting the fact that Superman is a super-strong being, which is an aspect of the character Snyder has said he wants to focus on. This should be good news for all of you out there who have been wishing for an epic, building-leaping, metal-crushing, high-flying Superman flick. You want Superman action, this image (if it’s a hint of things to come) is Superman in action.

As for the hairstyle – we’re not salon stylists, but it does make sense that as Superman he would have a hairstyle that was totally different, thereby distancing his superhero self from his mild-mannered alter-ego. The fact that Clark and Superman both had the relative same hairstyle in the comics never really made sense to me (a pair of glasses can’t disguise things that well).

Take a look at Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman:

  1. I’m up in the air about the costume. It has it’s ups & downs. It is extremely scaly & it appears to be missing the classic super-undies. Also, the colors aren’t as vibrant as I was picturing in my head. I understand, some of the more modern Superman versions portray Superman without the undies but I guess i’m used to the more old fashioned look. The “S” symbol is a perfect size & I like the shape of it.
The costume as a whole…..Superman’s suit was made by his mother! You can tell Martha Kent was not able to make this with her ordinary sewing kit.
Cavill’s portrayal looks bad ass! His hair, body size (other than his height), his demeanor. This is not a Superman you’d want to piss off, and if the film is going to be as action packed as we’re expecting, this guy is perfect!

    • The reason the undies are missing is because of DC’s New 52 reboot in which Superman’s new suit (which I heard is actually Kryptonian armour and not just tights) doesn’t have the classic red undies

      • DC’s New 52 costume of Superman looks better than the one they have in the movie. It still has a thick Red Belt to compensate for the lack of trunks. But Man Of Steel(2013)’s costume doesn’t have any belt so to speak, as a result , he looks naked!!

  2. Very disappointed…

  3. Is it just me or does the suit look Photoshopped?

  4. I haven’t read through all the comments yet but I have not seen anyone really say anything about the new “S”. I think this has to be my favorite part of the costume because it looks just like the original comic Superman; original as in the 1940s suits and such. I think with that in mind, to me, it gives the suit an old fashioned feel to it, which I love!

  5. It seems like Spiderman is tailoring Supermans costume too.
I think he needs the money ;).

  6. I don’t know about the rest of you: but speaking for myself. They need to ‘flip the script’ with Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent/Superman look.

-Brandon Routh’s hair was brown not black.

-Dean Cain slicked back his hair as the MOS.

    - Christopher Reeve wore a wig.(I can’t begin to tell you how shocked I was. When I found that out! I had always just thought that he had amazing thick shiny black hair.Who knew :P )

When I look at these pictures of Cavill.I can’t help but notice. How his hair as C.K. looks remarkably similar to Superman’s curly long black hair from the 90′s. And I’m loving it!

I’ve wanted to see LONG CURLY BLACK HAIR: “Superman from the 1990′s” on the Big-Screen for years.Let Clark Kent be the clean-cut alter ego.

There’s just something that looks so primal about Superman with long hair. He’s sort of a Force of Nature anyway.A wild man.Like Tarzan, Conan or Samson.

Superman doesn’t have a car.He doesn’t wear normal clothes. He doesn’t have a passport. He doesn’t even have a known place of residence. He’s sort of the ultimate outsider. So why should he look like everyone else.Every guy these days.Thinks that they automatically get Bad-Ass points if they rock a fade or Sheploo look.I’ll never forget how on The Sarah Conner Chronicles.John Conner cut his long hair off.To look more “serious” like a soldier.

When the ancient Spartans who many modern soldiers draw inspiration from.Actually rocked long hair. And had a Jim Kelly,”I’ll be to busy looking good.” Attitude :D

  7. I really like the cosyume and the tone the picture sets… superman does not have to be dark or gritty but he can be badass and the difference…he looks tough in this pic…superman returns branden routh never looked tough, not for one scene. michael shannon is a wonderful pick for zod…if they can find an equally good lex luthor there might be something here…

  8. GOD, Please don’t let Zack Snyder frag up Superman making it another 20 years before the SUPERMAN franchise is given another chance.

  9. Come to think of it, Henry Cavill would look great as Ultra Man from the Crime Syndicate if they used them in a Justice League film.

  10. The ‘S’ shield looks like glued on foam rubber. It’s dumb. It was dumb when Singer did it and it’s even dumber now that it is bigger. The waffle texture is dumb. It was dumb when it was Singer’s zillion little ‘s’ shields and it is even dumber now that it is Snyder’s lizard scales. The muted colors are dumb. It was dumb when Singer did it and even dumber now that Snyder should know better. Skinny Superman is dumb. It was dumb when Singer wanted his “Swimmer’s Body Superman” and it is dumber now, in that the one thing you thought you could count on was Snyder forcing his actor to get muscular. It’s like Snyder is taking the worst features of Singer’s film and amplifying them, instead of learning from his mistakes.

    • You raise valid points, the image does raise a lot of questions about the direction of the film…

BUT…these images are notorious for highlighting things that don’t really look that way during the film, and they’re also known for making people focus on every minute thing that’s in the image instead of remembering that they can’t really judge anything until they see the completed film.

    • Cavill is the biggest actor ever to play Superman.

  11. Cavill looks mean in that Picture and he looks like he wants payback ! i have a funny feeling that Zack really is going to reboot the hell out of this Franchise and thats just what it needs, the picture alone says alot. I personally want to see a Light Superman in a Darker more Mature movie, bringing General Zod back isn’t such a bad idea at all and would fit in a Darker movie. i can understand why people are complaining about Zod being in this movie but lets face it! Superman 2 was err how any years ago ?? I for one am looking forward to seeing a different spin on Superman lets just hope Zack dosnt get too exited and screw this up !

  12. The problem with Superman Returns was it was not nearly edgy enough and it was Boring as Hell.
Superman with CGI of this age should have action/action and more action that it interspaced with breathtaking into outer space and back fight sequences. Braniac or some other other worldly foe along with a convict or 2 from the Phantom Zone ( convict from ye ole home world).
Then wreck the hell out of a country or 2 in a huge final battle.
    But, Yawn…..
All hollywood knows how to do with Super Heroes is reboot them due to their lack of creative writing talent and cluelessness of what inspired our imagination reading these comics as kids.

  13. What happens when someone shoots at Supes with a kryptonite bullet??

    • He gets hurt…?

      • LOL@Foopher and Riddhiman,

Don’t mind me, I just wanted to see what kind of answers I would get. Blame those damn Geico commercials

..And I always wondered how come Supes never just…. got the F out the way. ROFL!
Does a Kryptonite bullet move faster than a speeding “normal” bullet?
Does that make it a “speedier” bullet (is that even a word?)
Does that mean he can’t go “neeh neahh neeh, you missed me?”

  14. @ Nate aka My 2 Cents, ha ha ha. I guess he dies.

Well, certainly don’t like the dark ,desaturated tone of the film (judging from the image). Superman unlike Batman is a brighter character , whose blue and reds make him stand out. The pic released by WB has a black & white look to it. Hell neither Batman movies were this drained of colour. I can live without the underpants, but what’s up with the Thigh-pads. And what about that alien looking ‘S’ insignia. The mouth of the ‘S’ is split into two, crap design. I don’t mind the large forehead at all, makes him look more mature and wiser in years (would help in the scenes with Amy Adams),but miss the curl. Well looking at Cavill’s images as Clark and Supes , there is a strong chance that it will be Clark sporting the hair-curl , not Superman. Will be interesting to watch. Let’s see , 2013 summer is far far away… .

  15. It’s a bird..it’s a lizard.

  16. I wonder how people would react if Metallo had a chuck of Kryptonite of different varieties other than green. Like Blue, or the red kind.

  17. Never really was a big fan of Superman…I love Batman and I do so b/c he is without any “super power” and yet is a “superhero”. Plus, when it comes to Superman, I really don’t get the glasses as a disguise thing. I mean you look different, but anyone who knows you, especially if they are looking at you dead on, knows its you. That being said, Henry Cavill playing this part is part, let’s face it, major part I’m willing to give it a try. And to be honest, at one point, I had given up on movie portrayals of Batman, all to be proven wrong by Batman Begins. I look forward to being proved wrong with Superman.

    • Batman’s a “crime fighter” not a “superhero” ;)

And the glasses aren’t his only disguise. He acts completely different, too. Is it very plausible? Probably not, but neither is an alien with amazing powers…

  18. People keep saying that Zod’s not a good choice for the villain, but he’s a perfect choice. This movie is about Superman deciding to become a hero, and Zod will be a good look for him at what he COULD become and what he DOESN’T want to become…

    • Very nicely stated…

      • Personally I think Snyder is a fantastic director, and I have faith in the grittier tone of Superman I suspect he will deliver. However, as much as I love Chris Nolan and David Goyer, and not to forget Jonathan Nolan, I’m worried about using General Zod as the villain. I like the idea of another origin story, but part of Superman becoming Superman is that he is (at the time) the ‘last son of Krypton’ and Earth’s new protector. I’d like a retelling of his origin story to be quick yet effective (educating new comers) and I’d really like a more sinister Lex Luthor developing a hatred for Superman to really back up the comics; and to also show what many past stories have been about. Finally, I think that a villain such as the Parasite- who needs power and energy would work well as he shows Superman not to become too dependant on power, and back up the strong morals and messages which Jonathan and Martha Kent give to him through his life- making him so human and relatable.

    • I agree, Of the possible villains in the SUPERMAN universe, and of those the few candidates that would be strong enough to carry the archrival role in a major SUPERMAN film, LEX LUTHOR, BRAINIAC & ZOD I’d say General Zod is a good choice. Luthor is done (3 times in the first 4 Supes films and again in the last Reboot). Brainiac is good but probably to alien and or hard (meaning very expensive) to pull of as would need to be done and so that leaves Zod. That’s not to say he isn’t a good choice because the other 2 are not. Of the 4 films with Reeves the best is the one with Zod as the main villain.

In the recently ended SMALLVILLE series the Zod character was given a lot of screen time and I believe they did a great job with him, opting to focus in on Zod’s psychological skills (ability to manipulate others to do as he wills) and not just that he is on par with Superman on a physical level.

Now that I think about it, General Zod should be able to easily defeat Superman if the whole “power of the yellow sun” angle is identical to both. Superman is not exactly a superior fighter in terms of skills and that’s because he doesn’t have to be; he’s a brawler. Zod is a trained general and so logic would dictate that he really should be able to wipe the floor with Superman. I hope Zack goes that direction because I would like to see a Superman who isn’t the vastly physical superior being and I mean regardless of whether the green kryptonite is involved. In fact a great final battle would be where he and ZOd have basically caused global havoc thru their fighting and ion order to prevents further damage to the Earth Supes does something to stop Zod that causes him to sacrifice himself like sending them both to the Phantom Zone or something like that. Clearly they’d have to find a way to get him back but it would be a very different ending for a Superman film.

  19. I think Cavill is going to do a great job as the man of steel. Sure, as far as I can tell, the costume the costume colors don’t appear to have the brightness of the Christopher Reeve costume, but I think it will do even though Cavill did wear a replica of Reeve’s costume for his screen test. And from what I have read, he looked every inch the man of steel. If Cavill looked great in the “dated” costume for the screen test, why wouldn’t it have worked for the movie. We’ll never know the workings of the Hollywood mind. Anyway, Henry Cavill is the new Superman and the temporary custodian of the role for this generation as was Christopher Reeve for his generation and those before him. And as long as the public wants more Superman movies, the torch will be passed on.

  20. Just finished reading the new Justice League #1 comic. Did anyone notice the similarities between Superman’s appearance at the end of that comic and this official picture released by Warner Bros? Could be a coincidence, but maybe they are trying to relate them? Batman v Superman? Or maybe this movie kicks off the Justice League??? Ah… wishful thinking. But the pictures are very similar.

  21. Finally!! A man who actually has some muscle playing Superman!

  22. Cavils muscles are real! He has engaged in an insane training routine to bulk up to be Superman. The suit isnt fake muscles – you will see by the time the movie comes out.. the set shots dont do his physique justice.

  23. Nothing wrong with this Superman whatsoever! Have always wanted to see a gritty, hard edged Superman who fits a perfect match between his raw ability and his steely personality.

He is, of course, supposed to be the man of steel! So he should act like it too. Everything should be done his way. He should even have a slight dark side (in the vein of the dark superman in Christopher Reeves movies), but not caused by some alteration – and certainly not as obvious. He should have a slight arrogant quality (“I will do things my way, when and if I feel like it”).

Then perhaps the movie will be about refining and taming that side of him, honing his abilities to the benefit of everyone and not just what HE thinks is right…

Because, let’s be honest, Clark Kent should be the only character that has all of his ‘soft’ side. Although, in this case, maybe even Clark Kent should be a gritty character.

Keep the original ideas coming! I love variety!

    Serious Superman

  24. Why is this movie taking so long to come out

  25. !!! HE ISSS PERFECT !!! VERY VERY GOOD LOOKING GUYYYY….THE MOVIE IS GOING TO BE PERFECT TOO…I LIKE HIM A LOTTTTTTTT

  26. !!!! HE IS PERFECT !!!!FOR PLAYING THE ROLE OF SUPER MAN…HE IS VERY VERY GOOD GOOD LOOKING GUY !!!I LIKE HIM A LOT…AND THE MOVIE IS GOING TO BE VERY GOOD TOO

  27. What I can see from the picture I guess this movie will be ruined by the use of to much CGI.

  28. I can’t wait to see it all those great stars together. all my favorite stars together WOW !!!!! Hurrray.!!!! Superman is back.!!!
