James Gunn has confirmed that Arrowverse's Superman & Lois is safe at The CW beyond season 3. The CW has been facing a lot of changes behind the scenes over the last year since Nexstar acquired 75% of the WarnerMedia/Paramount-owned network- Because of the new regime, several shows have faced a grim fate, especially the Arrowverse. In 2022, several DC TV shows got axed by The CW, raising questions about the remaining series, including Superman & Lois.
It appears that Superman & Lois will not be ending any time soon. According to Gunn, as reported by Variety, they are expecting to see Superman & Lois go on for "one or two more seasons." It's worth taking into account that this isn't an official renewal from The CW as the network and Warner Bros. TV have yet to comment on Superman & Lois' future. Gunn said the following about the iconic Arrowverse drama:
“It’s a show everybody likes, so it’s going to keep going for a little bit.”
Everything We Know About Superman & Lois Season 3
Superman & Lois season 3 will pick up a few weeks after the events of the season 2 finale. One of the new threats for the season will be the arrival of Bruno Mannheim, who will be played by Chad Coleman. While he will emerge as an obstacle to all the characters, John Henry Irons will particularly be tied to his arc. The Superman & Lois season 2 finale revealed that Bruno was involved with getting this Earth's John Henry Irons murdered, which is why the doppelganger will be investigating him. David Ramsey is expected to return as John Diggle, as he was the one to reveal to John about Bruno's crime.
One of the biggest new additions to Superman & Lois season 3 is the arrival of Lex Luthor. While Jon Cryer played him in the other Arrowverse shows, Michael Cudlitz will portray a new Lex on Superman & Lois. This iteration of Lex will be significantly different as he has been out of the public eye for years. As Lex is coming back out of the shadows, he is plotting a personal injustice against Lois and Superman. Whether or not Lex will connect with Bruno in any capacity remains to be seen. The Superman & Lois season 3 trailer has also teased that Lois may be pregnant again.
When Will Superman & Lois Season 4 Be Announced
Since Superman & Lois season 3 isn't premiering until March, a renewal is not expected to come any time soon. Even though The CW has tended to hand out early renewals in past years, that has changed since Nexstar took over the network. At this point, it may not be until the Upfronts when The CW reveals if Superman & Lois season 4 is a go. With Upfronts being the time when networks announce new programming and schedules, they also usually give updates on renewals and cancellations. Since The CW's original scripted shows are expected to go down to three, the network may be waiting to see Superman & Lois season 3's rating before renewing.
