Warning! Spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #1 ahead!

In Superman: Son of Kal-El #1, the new Superman, Jonathan Kent, is reversing his father's incredibly controversial decision to reveal his identity to the world. The first issue of the new series sees Jonathan taking on the mantle of Superman. It comes after months of build-up as Superman quickly began to realize just how powerful his son was. Now, the torch has been passed on, but changes will be happening as Clark and Jonathan are two different individuals, despite being related.

In this issue, Jonathan seeks out Damian Wayne to talk about his struggles. The two of them chat while easily taking down a horde of ninjas. Their conversation mainly consists of Jonathan questioning himself and his choices. Being the new Superman, Jonathan has the whole world on his shoulders and doesn't know how to deal with it. He is sure that he isn't doing enough, despite stretching himself incredibly thin. Luckily, Damien is able to knock some sense into his powerful super friend.

In Superman: Son of Kal-El #1 by Tom Taylor, John Timms, and Gabe Eltaeb, Damian Wayne suggests that Jonathan should build a new identity separate from being a hero. Damian offers up his services as he reminds Jonathan that his father is Batman and says "you think we can't build you a new identity?" The ex-Superboy's desire to be a great hero is clearly weighing on him. Even someone like Damian, whose definition of taking a break is fighting ninjas in a foreign city, realizes that Jonathan needs to change his ways. Essentially, Damian's antidote for Jonathan's current worries is to reverse the decision that the original Superman made.

Superman's controversial decision to reveal his identity to the world happened in Superman #18 by Brian Michael Bendis, Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, and Alex Sinclair. One of the core reasons behind Clark's identity reveal is that he wanted to show up representing both sides of himself at the same time. For an experienced hero like Superman that's no problem, but putting that on a seventeen-year-old is a lot. Without knowing, it's Superman's past decision that led Jonathan to question himself. Now, it's clear that DC is putting the new Superman down a course that will potentially reverse this. This means that Jonathan will soon have the personal side of his life, as well as being a hero, so that he can escape from the strains of being the world's greatest hero, at least for a bit.

DC's new Superman is clearly at a crossroads and the next choices that he makes will impact his future. Naturally, big changes are coming for the young hero as he learns to escape the public gaze. It must also be mentioned that the reason that Damian brings up all of this is that he is Jonathan's only friend and wants him to have more of a life. So, it can be assumed that as Jonathan Kent passes into this new phase of his life he will probably be making some new allies along the way. Superman: Son of Kal-El #1 is available in comic book stores and on digital platforms now.
