Superman villain General Zod will appear in the Supergirl season 2 finale, to be played by Mark Gibbon. Supergirl returns next week for its final five episodes this season, and there is a whole lot to look forward to. Fans have already been told that there is a big surprise in store for Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie (Floriana Lima), and that there will be some familiar faces in the mix for the final few episodes. The show doesn't have the same kind of 'big bad' that companion series Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow does, but chances are that Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) will be facing off against Rhea (Teri Hatcher) again before the season ends.

In addition to all that, there's another big-name villain on the horizon for the show: General Zod. The long-time Superman villain was rumored to be appearing on the show earlier this week, but this hadn't been confirmed by the network. Now, we can confirm this rumor is true, and that we know who will be playing the alien menace.

CBR confirmed the rumor with The CW, and that Mark Gibbon will be playing Supergirl's foe for the series. Gibbon is an old hand at superhero properties, too. The actor has already appeared in two other incarnations of the Superman mythology - as an oil rig worker in Man of Steel, and as three different characters in Smallville.

Supergirl Rhea

Nothing has been confirmed in terms of how General Zod will fit into the Supergirl season finale, but this may also involve the return of Non (Chris Vance) who was in season 1 of the show before being blinded and defeated by Supergirl. Another possibility is that Zod somehow teams up with Rhea, although this seems highly unlikely, given the animosity between their races. A third possibility is that Zod's appearance in the finale will come as a cameo, setting Zod up as the primary villain for season 3.

Zod is primarily a Superman villain in both the comics and previous movies and TV shows, so it is interesting to see him joining the Supergirl roster. However, Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) is also returning for the season finale, so this may be a case of Superman's battles bleeding over into Kara's world. This does, however, seem like an odd choice for a villain-of-the-week, so it's likely that this will not be the last that we see of General Zod. However, at the moment, all that is confirmed is his appearance and that Gibbon is portraying him, so everything else is speculation, and we will have to wait until May to find out exactly how Zod fits into the Supergirl world.
