Warning: SPOILERS ahead for the Supergirl season 2 finale
The upcoming third season of Supergirl will be losing Floriana Lima as a series regular. Supergirl concluded its second season earlier this week, in which the Girl of Steel battled her famous cousin in the streets of National City and then defended Earth from an invasion by the Daxamites. Unfortunately, in doing so, Kara Danvers had to say goodbye to her boyfriend, Mon-El. What happened to him as he departed Earth is something that may be explored next season. But, Mon-El’s relationship with Supergirl wasn’t the only relationship that blossomed last season.
Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) discovered that she had feelings for National City detective Maggie Sawyer (Lima) early on in the season, and how she came to terms with that – as well as sharing that news with her friends and family – became part of the season’s ongoing narrative, including the show’s message of tolerance of sex, gender, religion, race, and sexual orientation. Alex and Maggie dated throughout the season, and then in the season finale, Alex asked Maggie to marry her. Instead of giving an answer, though, all Maggie did was smile. While we don’t know what her decision was, the latest piece of news might be cause for concern.
In the wake of Supergirl‘s season 2 finale, TV Line has confirmed that Floriana Lima will be stepping down as series regular next season and will instead recur throughout the series’ third season. Here is what series co-creator and executive producer Andrew Kreisberg had to say on the matter:
“We adore Floriana and have loved working with her to tell this inspiring story. Although she’s not available to us as a series regular next season, as she’s looking to pursue other opportunities, we’re happy she’ll be returning for multiple episodes in Season 3.”
It appears the decision was entirely up to Lima, who is looking to expand her career, and that’s not easily achieved when one is working as a series regular on a popular show. While being promoted to series regular doesn’t mean the character will appear in each episode, it does mean the actor or actress will need to be on-call, so to speak, to appear in whichever episode the producers need them in.
Although she won’t be appearing in a regular capacity, Lima still plans on reprising her role in multiple episodes throughout season 3, which means her and Alex’s story may not be over yet. We won’t know until the season premieres later this year. At this stage, the show can take several different avenues. In the season finale, audiences were introduced to General Zod, the villain Reign, as well as the Legion of Super-Heroes ring, which was spotted in the Fortress of Solitude.
Supergirl season 3 premieres in Fall 2017.
