With each passing day we are that much closer to the start of the fall television season. And this year, there will be an unprecedented number of superhero and comic book adaptations broadcast on a number of networks. Though if one network has seemed to carve out a niche for themselves, it is The CW, which will feature four DC comics properties, Monday through Thursday. Arrow will be returning for season 5, while The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow will premiere their third and second seasons, respectively. But the newest series to The CW is Supergirl, which aired its first season on CBS, before it joined the rest of Greg Berlanti’s DC shows on The CW.
Ever since we learned that Supergirl would call The CW its new home, news has continued to surface regarding the show’s second season. The series has already been teased as more like the comics, and that is going to include characters, who, while new to the show, are quite familiar to DC’s fan base. It has already been announced that Tyler Hoechlin will appear as Clark Kent/Superman, Chris Wood will show up as Mon-El, and Sharon Leal will portray Miss Martian. Now, there is some more casting news to report.
EW reports that Federick Schmidt has been cast as longtime Superman enemy Metallo, and will appear in Supergirl‘s second season. Previewing Metallo’s role, the report states:
“When international assassin John Corben is badly injured after taking on both Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), he is reborn by a shadow organization into the Kryptonite-powered supervillain Metallo.”
While Metallo is no stranger to live-action television, he has appeared in both Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (played by Scott Valentine) and Smallville (played by Brian Austin Green), it will nonetheless be exciting to see him show up in Supergirl. Metallo will certainly be a formidable opponent for both Supergirl and Superman, as in most iterations of the character he not only possesses super strength from his cyborg body, but he is powered by Kryopnite in his chest — which can be a problem for Kryptonians.
What is particularly exciting about this report, is it appears fans will get to see John Corben’s transformation into Metallo. While other Superman antagonists, like Reactron, showed up in season 1, they had already assumed their more villainous personas. The tease seems to indicate there will be plenty of Supergirl and Superman teaming up, and that collaboration will be what ultimately leads to the creation of Metallo by a “shadow organization“. Could that organization be Cadmus, which has already been announced as appearing? We will have to wait and see.
The Flash season 3 will premiere Tuesday October 4th at 8pm on The CW, Arrow season 5 will premiere in the same timeslot on Wednesday October 5th, Supergirl season 2 on Monday October 10th, and Legends of Tomorrow season 2 on Thursday October 13th.
