If there’s one thing that the Arrowverse TV shows have never been afraid to be – it’s ambitious. Ever since Arrow first premiered back in 2012, Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, Marc Guggenheim, and the rest of the DC TV execs have continuously taken iconic characters from the DC comic books – whose powers some may think exceed their budgetary restrictions – and have found ways to make them work within the context of their stories. That’s a trend that has only continued and grown more and more common in Supergirl, which after making the move from CBS to The CW, is currently in the middle of its second season.
Earlier this season, fans got to see Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) team up with her famous Kryptonian cousin, Clark Kent/Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) in a fight against one of the latter’s more beloved supervillains, Metallo. Now, Kara is set to take on Mr. Mxyzptlk, yet another villain more commonly associated with her cousin, who also happens to be one of the most powerful villains Superman has ever faced.
In Supergirl‘s next episode, titled “Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk,” Kara will cross paths with the fourth dimensional trickster (played by Peter Gadiot) for the first time. In a bit of an unexpected twist too, his introduction to the DC TV universe will come in the form of a Valentine’s Day-themed episode, as he expresses his love for Kara Danvers the only way he knows how – through several mischievous tricks and illusions. The first promo for “Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk” was released following last night’s episode of Supergirl, giving fans their first look at Gadiot’s Mxyzptlk. Check it out for yourself in the space above.
Mr. Mxyzptlk is arguably one of the trickier Superman villains to bring to life in live-action form, since in most comic book iterations he’s depicted as a tiny imp dressed in various jester costumes – not exactly the most threatening look for an antagonist to have. But that’s one of the reasons Mr. Mxyzptlk is such a unique and exciting villain, though Supergirl is clearly bringing a much different version of the character to life here than what some fans may have been expecting, or may have hoped for.
Instead of the traditional, jester look, Gadiot’s Mxyzptlk is much more handsome and charming than the character has ever been before. But while that might be distracting for some, it also appears to work well within the context of the episode. He looks just as mischievous and annoying as he’s ever been, putting Kara in a wedding dress at one point during the episode and even showing up wearing his own version of Superman’s iconic costume just to try and trick her. Whether or not a more foolhardy, lovelorn version of Mr. Mxyzptlk will actually work will have to wait to be seen, but he already looks to be one of the Arrowverse’s more interesting spins on an iconic character from the comics.
Supergirl continues Monday February 20 with ‘Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk’ at 8pm on The CW.
