SPOILERS for those not caught up on Supergirl ahead

While the first season of Supergirl dealt with a whole prison of aliens unleashed on Earth, season 2 has introduced a myriad of even new aliens. In season 1, Supergirl had both the Kryptonian Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and Green Martian J'onn J'onzz (David Harewood), but season 2 saw the additions of Daxamite Mon-El (Chris Wood) and White Martian M'gann M'orzz (Sharon Leal). Although Krypton and Daxam were rival planets, both were destroyed, forcing Kara and Mon-El to overcome the prejudices they held - and, as established in recent episodes, they even developed feelings for each other.

In the most recent episode of Supergirl, 'Luthors'Kara and Mon-El's romantic progression came to a head when Kara admitted to having feelings for Mon-El a mere two episodes after he had professed his own feelings for her. However, while it seemed the Kryptonian and Daxamite were about to share their first kiss, they were interrupted by a portal breach that spit out none other than the tongue-twisting DC Comics trickster Mr. Mxyzptlk, played by Peter Gadiot (Once Upon A Time in Wonderland). The scene worked to set up next week's Valentine's Day episode of Supergirl, titled 'Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk', and now a new trailer and interview preview even more of what fans can expect from Mr. Mxyzptlk's inopportune arrival in National City.

The CW released an extended trailer for 'Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk' that further teases the "weirdest Valentine ever" and all the shenanigans Mr. Mxyzptlk will get up to while in National City - like fooling its residents, including Supergirl herself, into thinking he's Superman. The trailer also features a shot of Mon-El fighting Mr. Mxyzptlk and in an interview with TVLine, Wood explained how his character feels about the magical imp's obsession with Kara:

Mon-El hates this guy. He hates that he’s ruined this moment where they’re finally going to connect, and he hates even more that this guy wants Kara to marry him and is trying to manipulate the situation into making her almost feel like he has no choice. … When he ends up fighting Mr. Mxyzptlk, he definitely has all of [those feelings for Kara] fueling his blows. Every punch is filled with 'Don’t touch her! She’s mine!'

While we don't see much of Mon-El in either the extended trailer or the earlier promo for 'Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk' - aside from the shot of him fighting Mr. Mxyzptlk and an unexplained scene of Mon-El standing in his underwear in the DEO - the previously released synopsis for the episode backs up Wood's comment. The official synopsis revealed Mr. Mxyzptlk's arrival causes tension between Mon-El and Kara since they argue over how to deal with the trickster. While Kara believes him to be harmless, albeit irritating, Mon-El has seen creatures like him before and knows they can be dangerous.

Based on Wood's statement and the shot of Mon-El fighting Mr. Mxyzptlk in the trailer, it seems safe to say the latest arrival in National City will allow the Daxamite to flex his newly minted hero skills. Plus, while Mr. Mxyzptlk's marriage proposal to Kara and his subsequent antics will put a strain on her relationship with Mon-El, it seems likely they may be able to grow stronger because of the ordeal. It is the Valentine's Day episode, after all.

Of course, while Mr. Mxyzptlk will no doubt be a main focus of next week's episode, there are other bits of information to glean from this new trailer. For one, it doesn't appear that Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) will get the typical Valentine's Day with her new girlfriend since Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima) seems to dislike the holiday. Plus, Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) appears to be kissing an unknown alien in the alien-friendly bar where Mon-El works. So, there will be plenty of love, character drama, and comic book fun to be enjoyed when Supergirl returns with 'Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk' next week.
