Supergirl has found her new home in the move to The CW Network for season two, after spending its debut season on CW parent network CBS. The show follows the cousin of Superman, Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), one of the only other Kryptonians to survive the destruction of their home planet. She acts as the defender of National City, while Superman continues to guard Metropolis.

The show has brought in a lot of characters from the DC Universe in its short run, including Martian Manhunter, Jimmy Olsen, Mon-El, Clark Kent, Toyman and Red Tornado. One of the next villains to appear on the series is the legendary troublemaking imp himself - Mr. Mxyzptlk (Peter Gadiot).

The CW has released a synopsis for the upcoming episode 'Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk', which reveals that the 5th Dimensional Imp of comic book fame will be making his way to National City:

When Mr. Mxyzptlk (guest star Peter Gadiot), a magical imp, shows up on Earth and declares his love for Kara (Melissa Benoist), she tries to let him down easy, thinking him harmless. However, he decides it’s a challenge and starts to wreak havoc on National City. Mon-El (Chris Wood) has seen beings like Mr. Mxyzptlk on Daxam and knows how dangerous they can be. He and Kara argue over how to get rid of Mr. Mxyzptlk, further straining their relationship. Meanwhile, Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie (Floriana Lima) celebrate their first Valentine’s Day together.

It was previously indicated that Supergirl's Valentine's Day-themed episode was going to be the February 13th episode of the series, 'Luthors', but apparently that will not be the case - assuming this new synopsis is accurate, anyway.

The Mxyzptlk character has been a staple in the lives of Superman and Supergirl since he debuted back in the pages of Superman #30 in 1944. He isn't actually magical, but the fact that he comes from another dimension gives him some powers that humans don't have, making him seem that way. He spends a good majority of his time harassing Superman with needless pranks and annoyances. Mxyzptlk has the ability to shape and change things in the physical world by simply exerting his will and snapping his fingers, making him a dangerous foe or a powerful ally.

We know from the comic books that you can trick ol' Mxyzptlk by getting him to repeat his own name backwards; that will send him back to his own dimension for a few months. He has to either say or spell it, so Kara will have to get creative. Supergirl will probably have need this information to rid herself of this pesky imp.

 Mxyzptlk

Mxyzptlk, being an inter-dimensional imp, is often seen portrayed in animation where he can be full realized. Popular series like Super Friends, Superman: The Animated Series and Batman: The Brave and the Bold have featured the character. Surprisingly, this isn't the first time that Mxyzptlk has made a live-action appearance. He was first seen a few episodes of the Superboy television series from the late 1980s, played by Michael J. Pollard. Comedian Howie Mandel also played him in the popular 1990s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. Another version of the character was thereafter seen in Smallville, portrayed by Trent Ford.

Earlier this month, The CW Network renewed Supergirl for a third season, so hopefully we'll see a lot more of the "Super" Universe, and the varied characters within, to come.
