Supergirl star Melissa Benoist opens up about Kara’s relationship with Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath). When the show returns from its spring hiatus at the end of this month, it’s going to be with an episode that is all about Kara (Benoist) and Lena Luthor. The next episode, titled ‘Ace Reporter’, features iZombie star Rahul Kohli as Lena’s ex-boyfriend Jack Spheer, who comes to town and causes all kinds of chaos. Kara looks like she will be torn between her loyalty to her friend and her discovery that Jack is not all that he seems, promising an episode with a whole lot of Lena/Kara development.

The trailer has already shown the two friends huddled up together in one brief clip, as well as Kara at the dinner table with Jack. This seems to suggest that Lena invites Kara to come along with her more than once when she sees her ex (the synopsis already reveals that they go to one event of his together), and that she is leaning on her friend more than ever. Now, Supergirl star Melissa Benoist has spoken about how Kara sees Lena, and if she has any suspicions about her friend.

Talking to EW, Benoist reveals Kara has absolutely no concerns that her friend might turn out to be like the rest of her family. Instead, she says that Kara has a “special bond” with Lena, the only person she is close to who doesn’t know her secret. She even goes so far as to say that if Lena became an enemy, “it would be devastating.”

I think they have a really special bond. The allure of the Luthor-Super relationship is so fascinating in the comics. I love where they’re taking it now. She has no caution to being friends with Lena. She just sees a good heart right now.

Kara (and her alter-ego, Supergirl) have remained steadfast believers that Lena is not like the rest of her family, even when things made it appear otherwise. The two have grown increasingly closer throughout the season, with Kara offering advice to Lena on her fractured relationship with her mother. However, Lena also gave Kara the advice to post the blog that got her fired, which could come into play in the next episode since it sees Kara back in touch with her old boss and doing some investigating off the books.

Kara’s willingness to believe the best in people is one of her greatest qualities, but many fans believe that Lena is going to eventually become her enemy, mirroring the relationship that Clark and Lex Luthor had in Smallville. Whether this happens, or Supergirl is right to trust her, remains to be seen.
