On Smallville, since Clark’s dad has passed away and his mom has gone off to Washington D.C., he has no family left in town. In an effort to correct that situation, the producers of Smallville will be bringing his long lost cousin Kara (aka Supergirl) into the show for it’s 7th season.
Her background will match that of the latest reboot of the character in DC comics: That she was also sent to earth from the doomed planet Krypton at the same time Clark was, but she was a teenager at the time. Through some glitch in her ship she has remained in suspended animation all this time on Earth.
According to executive producer Al Gough:
“But there was a problem, and she’s been in suspended animation for the last 16 years. We’ll find out in the season premiere that the big dam break in last season’s finale is the reason she’s finally awoken.”
She will serve as a touchpoint to Clark’s past, since she grew up on Krypton. She’ll be able to tell him (and the viewers) all about what life was like there and about his parents. Also, unlike Clark who seems to have a fear of flying, she will be fully capable of doing so.
It looks like this final season is going to be much more “superhero-y” than previous seasons, what with Bizarro, Supergirl, Lex’s super-army and no doubt more Justice League appearances. That sounds good to me, although the writers may find it progressively more difficult to keep any semblance of reality on the show as it veers further into comic book territory. On the other hand I think this is what the fans have been wanting more of for quite a while.
In regards to the Kara’s ability to fly while Clark cannot, I’m curious to see how they handle that… Clark has had his entire life to get used to his powers, while Kara (as far as I know) will wake up in the season premiere and set foot on Earth for the first time. On krypton she didn’t have super-powers, so I can’t wait to see how the explain her getting a grip on suddenly having all these amazing abilities and mastering flight almost instantly while Clark continues to do his imitation of The Flash.

Awesome.
Is there any news about who they cast in the role?
I can’t wait until the new Season. =D
I think they may announce at the upcoming Comic-con.

I guess helen slater is going to appear this season as well.
by the way, whatever happened to the “no kryptonians rule?”
I don’t remember that specific rule, but I can forgive the producers for breaking rules they set for the show 6 years ago, before they knew what direction it would go and how popular it would be.
At the very least, the “no flights” rule seems kind of silly at this point:
Super-strengh – Check
Super-speed – Check
Heat beams coming out of his eyeballs – Check
Flying – No way, that’s too over the top!
Vic
I agree that even the “no flights rule” could be thrown out at this point, but if I remember correctly the no Kryptonians rule was NOT self imposed. I think they mentioned it with respect to only being able to show Lara and Jor-El’s hands in Memoria.
Then again, maybe I subconsciously made all of this up.
“Then again, maybe I subconsciously made all of this up.”
Yeah… you probably did.
Vic
Does any of it really matters? the whole story is off the rails anyway… ever since L-Lane showed up :p
Blondy,
I look at it as an alternate universe version of Superman. That’s the only way to consider it if you don’t want to get mad at it.
Vic
Much as the “ElseWorlds” comics that DC puts out periodically that puts a twist into our ‘normal’ story line.
My fave…although I can’t remember the title right of bat…. (heh.. no pun intended)…
….is the story where a family named Wayne finds Kal-El, not the Kents. Lex Luthor as the Joker, and Lois Lane, reporter by day, Cat-Woman by night.
….now that I think about it, I think they called it “ElseWorlds’ Finest”, but don’t quote me.
this no flight of clark kent is becoming an issue, since he can’t fly now makes him somehow weak also the new supergirl is not flowing with the movie scene and i think it should end in this season and not continue to the next seasons.
Yes, the inability of Clark to fly this far into the series really is quite ridiculous.
Vic
i don’t know why the producer made season six and seven full of bad kryptonian while good characters begins to pop out. supergirl in this present season is too soon appearing to the season and the story that she was on earth for sometime now to protect clark and can also possess clark’s powers, moreover she can fly. all this are b*******,and what happen to jor el’s part to play in clark’s life,I believe the man hunter, jor el and also clark’s past experience will protect him. clark also has to fly because it is important in his on earth.
there is a sign of success in the seventh season, but the story is begining to divert and confuse the viewers especially me. why must bizzaro come back and why must lex luthor know about the fortress of solitude and so on. i believe the writers are begining to lose their minds or something because the plot of the story is changing like it is another movie entirely.
