Returning characters Cat Grant and Superman will play pivotal roles in the Supergirl season 2 finale. The season finale of Supergirl is rapidly approaching, and it looks like all of Kara's (Melissa Benoist) old friends are going to be coming along for the ride. In the most recent episode of the series, 'City of Lost Children', Rhea (Teri Hatcher) revealed her evil plan - to bring the Daxamite fleet to Earth and take over, turning the planet into New Daxam. Having manipulated Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) into helping her, Rhea is now in control, and it's up to Supergirl and her team to resist the invasion in the next (aptly named) episode, 'Resist'.

Fans already knew that the final two episodes ('Resist' and 'Nevertheless, She Persisted') would be featuring the return of Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) and Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), as they have previously been announced for the episode. It's still not been revealed exactly how these two characters will fit in, but now a Supergirl producer has provided a little more insight into just how important they are to Kara in her latest big fight.

Talking to EW, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg promises a big role for both Cat and Superman in the finale. He describes them as key to supporting both Kara and Supergirl, and teases their appearances as "shocking."

I don’t want to tease too much about how they return because both Superman’s return and Cat’s return are great surprises; how it happens, you’ll be shocked at both of their appearances. This is Kara’s darkest hour. It’s perfect that she has both Superman and Cat, who are these great stabilizing influences in her life — Cat, who tends to have a good handle on what Kara needs, and Clark has a pretty good handle on what Supergirl needs. She needs them both desperately because she’s faced with some truly awful decisions to make in the finale and choices that affect her both as Kara and as Supergirl. Having her surrogate mother and surrogate brother there to make these decisions, it’s good to have them there.

Cat Grant Returning for Supergirl Season 2 Finale

Cat Grant left the show after season 1, when Supergirl moved from CBS to The CW (and filming moved from LA to Vancouver). The owner of CatCo Media, Grant announced her departure would be a leave of absence, and she put James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) in charge. Superman has previously visited National City and helped Supergirl with her work as a hero, but returned to Metropolis, and stays in touch with Kara regularly.

The description of Cat and Superman's return as "shocking" is particularly interesting, as both are still alive and in some kind of contact with Kara (Superman more so than Cat, of course). Their return at a time of emergency would seem completely reasonable, so there may be some other aspect to it that makes this such a big surprise. Both are also fan-favorites, so there's little doubt that their return will be well-received, although we won't know until Monday exactly how they come into play.
