[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Supergirl ahead.]

-

Before going on hiatus for a month, Supergirl left fans with a couple surprising twists to mull over in the coming weeks. First, after seeming to grudgingly accept Mon-El's decision to stay on Earth, Queen Rhea (Teri Hatcher) murders her husband Lar Gand (Kevin Sorbo) for his "betrayal" and vows she isn't done with her son's new home. Then President Olivia Marsdin (Lynda Carter), after admonishing J'onn for disobeying her orders not to engage with the Daxamite ship, reveals to viewers that she is an alien.

The looming threat of Rhea and the mystery of the President's intentions won't be all Kara has to deal with in upcoming episode "Ace Reporter". This story will return focus to her human identity as a journalist, as she works alongside former CatCo colleague Snapper Carr (Ian Gomez) on a story about a scientific breakthrough. Rahul Kohli (iZombie's Ravi) plays Jack Spheer, the genius who has created a device that will eradicate all disease.

In the new trailer for the episode, which you can watch above, we see that Spheer will be rekindling his romantic interest in former flame Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath). Meanwhile, Kara seems to be getting information from a source that her friend Lena's ex may be a murderer. In the comics, Spheer became the mind-controlling villain Biomax, and we've already seen plenty of evidence on Supergirl for how terrifying that kind of power can be.

The video also shows Kara and Lena getting closer than ever before, and with McGrath being promoted to series regular for the upcoming season 3, we expect they're working towards true BFF status. In addition to whatever fallout may occur with Spheer, it looks like the two may bond over another secret. The final scene of the trailer shows Kara in her journalist persona, her clothes burned from an attack and revealing her Supergirl costume underneath. That image is reminiscent of a recent Superman graphic novel, Before Truth, where Clark's similarly damaged clothing ended up exposing his secret identity.

The Superman story had Clark's superhero status revealed to the whole world, but it's more likely on Supergirl that only Lena will be in on that knowledge. Since every violent alien seems to be able to find Kara in her apartment, however, the fact that Kara's true identity is unknown does require some suspension of disbelief each week. Whatever the result of "Ace Reporter", it has an intriguingly noir mystery vibe to it, and it should be fun to see how Kohli blends romantic charm with some very ominous undertones.
