So here’s the deal, if you’re a long time Star Trek fan you’re either going to love the upcoming Star Trek movie or you’re going to hate it. I’m betting there will be no middle ground on this one. But I’m betting that if you’re NOT a Trek fan, this movie is going to rock your world.
While I’m still having a bit of a hard time wrapping my head around Chris Pine as Kirk (especially his use of the word “man” 200 years from now in the following trailer) I’m leaning towards the “gonna love it” camp.
Enough yakking, check out the latest trailer, which will premier on TV during the Super Bowl…

There have been comparisons of this film to Star Wars but I don’t think that’s right. This looks like it’s going to have its own look and feel and is going to be like Star Trek on steroids. In the end, will it be great? That remains to be seen, but at this point I’m thinking my cautious optimism over the course of the production will end up being justified.
What do YOU think?
Star Trek opens on May 8th.

It still looks like a “What If” version of Star Trek (which it actually IS, judging from the info we got).
Kinda surreal … but not unpleasant.
I will watch it. Thus far, they won.
The one line that makes me cringe is “Why are you talkin’ to me, man.”
I hate current colloquialisms in sci-fi movies based in the future.
Vic
Well, Vic, the movie won’t age well.
That’s for sure.
But on the other hand … the original show didn’t either.
I will watch this for the fun of it and if the rest of the film is good enough, I will ignore these small fauxpas-es.
I super excited for this film.
What hurts me is that skydiving crap. That’s not cool, fun or creative so why do they add stuff like that to the movie?
Maybe they forgot when the movie was based and what tech they have in that period.
This looks good. This one and the Transformers 2 teaser are the best so far. Haven’t seen the GI Joe teaser yet.
Excellent comparison Vic of “Star Trek on steroids”…I didn’t get much of an idea as to plot, storyline ..it just seemed like style over substance to me..It had it’s moments but I just keep getting the distinct impression that they are keeping the plot “hidden” because they don’t want the lontime fans of this franchise generating negative buzz for this film…I have to say I am very disappointed as I was expecting more from Abrams & Co at this point..
OR they are keeping the plot hidden so it’s more suspenseful when you watch it…
I hate it when a trailer shows so much of the plot that you have so much time before the movie comes out to figure out how it would end…
This way, you can’t figure out the end because you don’t even know what it is about.
Star Trek on steriods – and that is the problem. The core of the original show was Kirk, Spock, and McCoy – all the explosions and space battles were just window dressing. We haven’t seen jack in terms of what the relationship between those three are like in this movie.
@Rob Keyes: The skydiving portion is “orbital skydiving”, and it has been a long running part of Trek. Including the deleted scene from the start of Generations where Kirk was supposed to be doing it.
Before this trailer i was having my doubts about this movie, but i am 99% happy about this movie now.
I liked this trailer, although I thought it was a bit too fast. In fact, I’m liking all these trailers during the game.
Meh, I can’t get Galaxy Quest out of my mind. It just feels like its a parody that’s trying to take itself seriously.
Too MTV-ish… I dunno, we’ll see when it’s released.
To me it looks to be simply a good and enjoyable movie and not a “Star Trek” movie. I’m sorry if this offends some people, but every franchise needs new blood if it is to continue, and one of Trek’s main failings this last decade is that it is _stale_. Yes, occasionally modern colloquialisms do bug me, but then so does the frankly artificial and generally poorly thought out future trends that most of these shows try to invent, particularly Trek.
In addition to a well reasoned story and an engaging cast, I crave action and excitement. This movie looks _fast_, and that is something Trek has needed for a very very long time.
I’m just plain jazzed. I’ll be there on opening night, looking for the rest of my fellow nerds.
But so help me God… if this movie is butchered by shakey-cam (i.e. Bourne and the best car chase I never say and that abortion of a movie Cloverfield) I will never forgive them. There are better methods to injecting realism into a film that strapping a camera to the back of a three-legged armadillo, slapping it on the hindquarters, and turning it loose while the actors “act”.
I just want a ‘Tease’. NOT the plot, NOT the story, just something that peaks my interest. Too may ‘big movies’ have Trailers that are more of a mini-movie than a taste… I think the movie will rock. It’s just a cool idea! Gotta fly! -Stark
I think they emphasize the action to get non fans and action fans .
Iron Man Had a lot of great character moments but they sold it on the action ,
humor and the suit .
It kind of makes you wonder though ,
after the Success of Iron Man did somebody at Paramoiunt think it might be a good idea to emphasize the skydiving scenes because its basically men in armorlike flying suits?
Just a thought.
Nonetheless, I think marketing is seperate from the final product .
I am more then willing to let this film speak for itself .
right now , this is the only movie I may see more then once this year.
But I will see it at least once .
Congratulations JJ!
You got me!
That Tony Stark is one busy guy. Running a business, fighting evil, posting in message boards and blogs… Where does he find the time? AND he has to have some spare time to mack it with the ladies, geez.
This trailer came off way too angsty for me. Definitely does not give off any Trek vibes at all– in-fact, if it weren’t for Spock and the title at the end, I would have never guessed this was a Star-Trek film at all.
In saying that, I will go see it, if not just for Spock and Scotty. At this point, though, I’d rather strap-in for TNG and ENT marathons.

first the word “Man” has ben around for a long time, it comes in to use, then it fades out, then it comes back again, over and over again. so that argument is a fail. as for the move it self, dont know if I will like it or not. if they make kirk a captan right off the bat, I will be pissed, he is not the first captan of the enterprise, he is the second one. as for action, now a days they need to have a lot of that just to keep the people watching it as the attention span of the normal person is smaller than it use to be, people want it fast, and big, get one thing done then move on the the next thing. (sorry for all the spelling errors) just wait for it to come out them either dog on it, or praise it. the trailes look good os far, and I will go to the movies to see it, there has been too many times where I thought a move would suck then watched it on dvd, and thought, man this is good, it must have been better on the big screen. remember these movies are not made to make “you” happy, they are made for every one in mind
I can’t say the “Man” thing bothers me. Trying to capture the feel of an era, even one being invented as a future-setting has to be seen as something of a translation for the audience. It’s never an easy balance, and that one word isn’t really enough to bother me. If some “babe” tells Kirk to “text” her the next time she’s in town, then that would be pushing it. Is it even realistic to have all these people using English? Seriously? Do we think English will be the predominant language that far into the future, or that English (if it’s still in great use) will still sound like that? All I’m saying is to wait until we’ve seen the finished product before deeming the film’s interpretation of the future as lame or weak.
If anything, I think the trailers have made it clear that these films will still have a strong element of character development to the story. This movie is intended as a coming-of-age moment for Kirk and Spock, when a crisis on a galactic level forces them to make some hard choices in their lives in order to save many others.
The more I see, the more excited I get about this movie, and I am a long-time fan of the “Star Trek” universe, even if I’m not a hard-core fan.
“OR they are keeping the plot hidden so it’s more suspenseful when you watch it…

You mean it not going to end with Vulcan being save, kirk declared a hero, the bad guy loosing and dyeing/sent back to his time with spock, theirs memories of what Romulans look like made to disappear by someone from the future to get the future time line back on track. I mean even I know that going to happen in the end. It not hard really, unless JJ truly going mess up the time line an destroy Vulcan and make Kirk failure/anti hero.
Demon_Shade, Kirk is actually the third captain of the Enterprise, the first was Robert T. April, then it was Pike and then it was Kirk. Spock was first officer from pike days.
As to the trailer, seeing the Enterprise built on earth still make me sick.
The sky diving is nothing special either, was done in a ep of voyager.
As to the rest of the trailer, it going to age real bad, just like the transformer movie has. The lines sound just bad now instead of funny.
As to the use of man does not really sound professional now does it and I doubt it would allowed to be used or tolerated in starfleet.
It seem to me at the point when Kirk says “man” is at a point when he is being recruited by Pike who probably knows him in some way outside of Starfleet.
What I’m getting from the trailers (this one and the previous one) is that a large part of the movie will be character development, albeit at a frantic pace. Which as many have pointed out may be what it takes to bring Star Trek into the 21st century. A reintroduction (or redefining) of the characters and the Trek universe for a new audience.
I’m not saying I’m crazy about this, but as a Trekkie I just want to see Star Trek at the movies again and something new for Trek, such as modern movie making styles and techniques may turn out to be a good thing (hopefully).
This is the best kind of trailer, one that makes you think ‘what the heck was that’ and ‘why are they doing this’! Gets you interested and makes you want to see the movie, at least it does me!
I am curious who is in the red sky diving suit? Will the curse of the Red Shirt live on?
Eh….
I’m excited about this film and I LOVED the trailers. I think that it’s about time that Trek has gotten a shot in the arm and some of it stoicism removed. Don’t get me wrong, I am a HUGE Trek fan, but sometimes the shows (and films) were a little dry. It’s no coincidence that alot of my favorite Trek is the episodes with the most action. I will most likely be seeing this in IMAX on opening night. It’ll be worth the extra drive and cash to see it.
@David
The guy in the red suit is supposed to be Chief Engineer Olsen. I don’t think he makes it to the original series. Hmm.
I do my own analysis off of the HD downloadable ones on ITunes. I watch its through a few times, then I do slow and stop motion on them to try to get a better look. Here’s what I saw:
Kirk’s bar fight scene followed by the speech he gets from Captain Pike. Then a shot of a very futuristic San Francisco followed by introduction between Kirk and McCoy; (I’m getting a very good vibe from Karl Urban as Bones.) Next, Ice planet scene with monster, then a new shot of the Enterprise with I though looked real good. Then some shots of Nero trying to drill into San Fancisco bay. And finally, the orbital skydiving.
Final opinion; this is going to be a fast paced, yet deep story that I am drooling over every time there is new footage. This will be great and I accept it as a Star Trek movie.
@ andrew,
It’s a long running part of Trek because it was part of a deleted scene…? I’ve never seen it in the episodes of all the series’ I watched or the movies – But that still doesn’t touch on my point that I personally think it looks stupid and the fact that THEY think it’s so awesome that it’s in every Trek trailer as a highlight marketing point REALLY worries me.
The folk I was with when we saw this said the movie looks stupid because of that so that was a little depressing. I don’t agree with them entirely because I really want to see this flick but that scene looks unattractive to me as well.
There’s only 2 hours to tell this story that will hopefully rekindle the Trek franchise – I don’t want a portion of that wasted on Skydiving which really has no place in Trek movies in my opinion – whether it’s a minor point or not.
What do you guys think of that scene?
This is going to rock Star Trek is finally going to have the action it should of had decades ago it always had great storylines-actors-charactors-the ships everything except action but now it is going to be action action action and all I can say is F-ing SWEET thank you J.J.
@Rob
I think it’s difficult to judge the skydiving scene outside of any context.
Vic
@Rob Keyes
Oops, transporter malfunction. How many times has that been a driving element?
I don’t know, it’s hard to justify anything in Trek, and so easy to pick holes in anything. Why bother?
@ Tim
I can’t say where I heard it ( I’m getting old and some things don’t stick to the gray matter so well any more), but it was mentioned that the transporters were going to have the sort of newness experienced in ‘Enterprise’ on TV. I am hoping that is the case but it still leaves the transporter to come to rescue in a pinch. Something I never really liked about the device because it couldn’t do almost the same thing in different episodes (especially for TNG)
Another thing Tim, with this new beginning some of those holes may get plugged up once and for all. For that to happen though this movie will need to stand alone as the defining word on Star Trek, a reimagining (oops! Did I just say that BAD word?) if you will!
The only thing I could think of that had skydiving was a Voyager episode. Can’t remember the title, but it was at the beginning of the episode when Torres was doing it in the holodeck. It was the one where she kept turning of the safety protocols.
I dont have a link but TrekMovie has an analysis of the ad which includes a very spoiler specific explanation of what is now being called the skydiving scene .
You can go to TrekMovie and see what thats about .
Its very important to the plot .
They believe the “Woo Hoo” line was not spoken by one of the main characters.
Too Abercrombie for me. Seems we are in for a Bay-esque Trek. Still looking forward to it. Popcorn Trek is still better than the last 20 yrs of Next Gen, banal, pseudo-intellectial, pretentious, Berkley-Left wing Trek (except DS9 which was great)
@Lord Garth
Yeah, I never liked Picard’s leadership by committee. Like he was incapable of making a decision on his own or just wanted to validate the self-esteem of his bridge crew by asking them for their opinion.
Give me Kirk any day.
Vic
Here Here!!!
Or having a Kindergarten in the middle of the Space Naval Fleet’s Flag-Battleship???? Like some sort ofNorthern California-Oregon New Age Tantric commune. I guess ramming that section of the ship (Where the kindergarten would be) into the Shinzon ship in Nemisis (WITHOUT EVACUATING THE SHIP FIRST!!) took care of the shortage of chocolate milk. Pure Hippie Utopian poo.
LAME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Vicster, I like the cut of your jib and I love the site. Wondering if you ever get updates from Criterion regarding their upcoming releases.
@Lord Garth
Hey, thanks bro – appreciate the props. Sorry, but I don’t get any sort of updates from Criterion. I’m sure you can find that on the web somewhere…
Best,
Vic
“Set your phasers to stun.”
LMAO, imagine if our troops had to load rubber bullets into their M4’s…
oh my god this is going to be excellent. i know its going to be better than the past star trek films. the trailer looks so cool; the costumes, ships, and CG looks awesome.
”go star trek”
As far as Kirk’s “Man” comment – Anyone remember doc McCoy in TWOK? I do remember him saying, “Good God, Man!” So it is no stretch.
As far as the Enterprise being built on Earth. – Are you sure that was Earth? In the future, Mars is Terraformed no? The Mars desert may look like Earth. We should wait and see.
Personal Note — I am soooo pumped for this film I can barely contain myself!!! lol
