2016 is going to be a big year for DC, on both the small and big screen. Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and David Ayer’s Suicide Squad will both open in theaters next year, introducing several future Justice League members and DC super-villains alike to the shared DC movie universe (aka the DC Extended Universe) established by Man of Steel. Furthermore, The CW’s shared DC TV show universe – which currently includes Arrow and The Flash – will add a third installment, in the form of a series titled DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
While DC TV shows and movies don’t take place in the same continuity for the time being (a la Marvel Studios films and TV series), it nevertheless makes sense for DC to promote both its upcoming live-action films and television projects alike, at the same time if possible. That’s exactly what is going to happen in January 2016 too, as The CW gears up for the premiere of Legends of Tomorrow.
On Tuesday, January 19th, 2016, The CW will air two specials, titled DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: Their Time Is Now (airing at 9:00 pm ET/PT) and DC Film Presents: Dawn of The Justice League (airing at 9:30 pm ET/PT), respectively. Naturally, the former of the two CW/DC specials will focus on introducing the central players in Legends of Tomorrow – including such characters as Captain Cold, White Canary, and Hawkgirl – while the latter special will include a brand-new Suicide Squad trailer, along with sneak peeks at both Batman v Superman and Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman film (which arrives in 2017).
Here is the official description of The CW’s special for DC’s upcoming Justice League films:
DC FILMS PRESENTS: DAWN OF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE invites viewers behind the scenes of the exciting new movies coming out of the DC Films universe, culminating in the thrilling world premiere of the all-new trailer for “Suicide Squad,” DC’s misfit crew of antiheroes forced into saving the world this summer, with director David Ayer. Hosted by filmmaker/writer/lifelong comics fan Kevin Smith, with special guest DC Entertainment’s Geoff Johns, the special showcases the explosive landscape of DC’s greatest heroes, kicking off with “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” in theatres this March, and with a sneak peek from the upcoming Wonder Woman feature film.
Get a look at never-before-seen footage, and see interviews with such stars as Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot, and directors Zack Snyder and Patty Jenkins—just a few of the creative forces behind the much-anticipated film franchise that will bring together the greatest collective of Super Heroes in the upcoming Justice League feature film. And because no Super Hero could make his or her mark without a truly formidable foe, the special also provides glimpses of DC’s most famous Super Villains.
An alleged description of the new Suicide Squad trailer claims the theatrical preview will be set to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and will better highlight the super-villains in Ayer’s film, including both Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Jared Leto as the new Joker. While Batman v Superman is no doubt an “event film” since it will unite Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) on the big screen together (in live-action form) for the first time, there appears to be as much (maybe even more, depending on who you ask) fan interest for Suicide Squad too. Hence, many people will be tuning in for the movie’s next trailer, be it set to a Queen tune or not.
As for the Wonder Woman solo film: the sneak peek will likely be composed primarily of behind the scenes footage, seeing as Jenkins only started principal photography on her superhero movie near the end of November. Nevertheless, a live-action feature film anchored by Diana Prince is something that DC Comics fans have long awaited – and seeing as the next wave of marketing for the DCEU is about to get underway, now’s as good a time as any to start drumming up more interest for what lies ahead in 2017 too (see: Wonder Woman and Justice League Part One).
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25, 2016, which is followed by Suicide Squad on August 5, 2016; Wonder Woman on June 23, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 23, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and then Green Lantern Corps. on June 19, 2020.
The Flash will return on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, while Arrow will return on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 and Legends of Tomorrow will see its series premiere on Thursday, January 21, 2016.
