Details and rumors about DC Comics and Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad movie are now being doled out daily, painting an interesting (if not altogether predictable) portrait of how Fury director David Ayer is going to bring the DC villain underworld and secret government sector to life onscreen.
Below you’ll find the latest RUMOR about a character in the film: Captain Boomerang, who will be played by Terminator Genisys and Die Hard 5 star, Jai Courtney.
Once again, as per “El Mayimbe” of Latino-Review:
#SUICIDESQUAD #skwad #CAPTAINBOOMERANG tidbit. So here is what I know about Jai Courtney's character. Boomerang is very rock n roll & they're experimenting with a series of looks for him. Very hard rock influenced. Example, he wears a pantera shirt with his prison uniform plus the trademark beanie. #dc #dccu #dcmovie #dccomics #jaicourtney #pantera
In the comics, Captain Boomerang is about as cheesy as he sounds – a walking Australian stereotype born out of the era when comic book characters, in general, could be colorful stereotypes. In more recent years, Captain Boomerang (or just “Boomerang”) has been reinvented to be a bit more rounded of a character, often mocked for his questionable weapon of choice. The DC New 52 reboot has kept Boomerang positioned within the Squad with far more flare, often competing with Deadshot, the other marksman on the team.
Arrow had a “grounded” version of the character who used to be a covert agent working for Amanda Waller, but aside from boomerangs he was more “realistic” with a military operative aesthetic that made sense for the world of the show. Based on what El Mayimbe describes above, some fans my have panic flashes of Colin Farrell’s Bullseye from the 2003 Daredevil movie, rocking a trench coat and “rocker” vibe instead of his usual comic book assassin gear.
In any event, Jai Courtney – as a personality – has the snarky edge that makes Boomerang the comic relief/instigator in the ensemble. Whichever way he goes with the performance will likely play into the “love to hate him” effect of the character. And it sounds like it could definitely be a getup that fans could love to hate on. Given he’s a native Australian, the accent should at least be an easy knockout.
