There are some who say that body modification is the mark of a degenerate lifestyle, and the cast of David Ayer’s upcoming supervillain team-up movie Suicide Squad aren’t doing much to dispel that notion. The Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and El Diablo (Jay Hernandez) all have tattoos, and it’s possible that some of the other characters have similar body art that we’ve not yet seen. Several of the film’s actors – including Cara Delevingne, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney – already sport tattoos in real life, though these may or may not be covered up or altered in the movie.
One character from DC comics whose tattoos serve a practical purpose is Tattooed Man, an alias currently claimed by former U.S. Marine Mark Richards, who possesses the ability to make his tattoos come to life. Selma actor Common has previously been rumored to be playing Aquaman villain Black Manta in Suicide Squad, but the first set photos of Common have led some fans to speculate that he’s actually playing Tattooed Man.
The photos, courtesy of Twitter user SuicideSquadHQ, show Common dressed in biker gear with a nose ring, snake bite piercings, and several facial tattoos including an eye on his forehead, a cross on his cheek and what looks like the tentacles of a sea creature and a dragon on the top and side of his head, respectively. He may have body tattoos as well, but the rest of his skin is mostly covered up.
The tattoos don’t necessarily mean that Common is playing Tattooed Man, since Ayer seems pretty enthusiastic about covering everyone with body art in Suicide Squad. Another theory floating around, based on the forehead tattoo and goatee, is that he’s playing the immortal spell-caster Doctor Mist, while his fang necklace has led to speculation that he could be playing Bronze Tiger.
Suicide Squad is currently filming on location in Toronto, and the ‘on location’ aspect of that means that there have been a lot of leaked set photos and videos. Ayer has insisted that the best surprises are still being held back, but Common wasn’t the only actor who had his photo taken in costume this week. More set photos, courtesy of E! Online, offer a new look at Leto as the Joker, including details like his gnarly teeth and the tattoo of a grin on his hand.
Suicide Squad has been filming for about two months now, so fans who are desperately trying to avoid spoilers should take comfort in the fact that the movie is heading towards the tail end of production and the flow of set photos should slow down soon. Let’s hope that what Ayer said is true, and that there’s still a lot more to Suicide Squad than what we’ve already seen.
