While Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is easily the most-hyped upcoming comic book movie from Warner Bros., Suicide Squad might be the most interesting. Written and directed by David Ayer, the movie will take a handful of villains from the pages of DC Comics and put them together as a black ops team recruited for the most dangerous missions that A.R.G.U.S. can come up with. After all, a superhero’s death is a tragedy, but no one cares if one of the bad guys gets killed.
The villains featured in Suicide Squad include some well-known faces like the Joker (who isn’t on the team) and Harley Quinn (who is), along with quite a few lesser-known rogues. Somewhere between these groups is Digger Harkness a.k.a. Captain Boomerang, played by Terminator: Genisys star Jai Courtney. Despite the fact that Captain Boomerang is usually portrayed as either clean-shaven or with mutton chops, a cast photo of the Suicide Squad members showed Courtney sporting some pretty terrible facial hair.
Courtney is cursed to carry this beard around with him until Suicide Squad finishes filming, and the subject of it came up in an interview during a press junket for Terminator: Genisys. Speaking to HitFix, Courtney shared an anecdote about how his beard came to be and revealed that Ayer was personally responsible for the look.
“David Ayer came into the make-up room when we were having the meetings to decide what the thing was, and just picked up the clippers and started shaving me. And I’d shown up quite hairy so they’d got freedom to move, and he just started attacking me… And then he’s like, ‘You look like bad news… It looks like your buddy got drunk and cut your hair.'”
Aside from being a funny anecdote, this also offers some insight into Ayer’s very ‘hands-on’ approach to directing Suicide Squad. It’s not the first time that one of his productions has taken a turn for the unconventional; during the filming of Fury, actor Shia LaBeouf reportedly cut open his own face to make his wounds look ‘real’, and didn’t wash for the entirety of the production, which gave the close quarters of the set a very authentic smell.
Courtney goes on to say that, after creating Captain Boomerang’s crooked, messy mutton chops and mustache, Ayer simply said “It’s good” and walked out, leaving the film’s hair stylists to recreate the look for the remainder of the shoot. Ayer’s approving comment of, “It looks like your buddy got drunk and cut your hair” is also quite insightful, suggesting that the director is deliberately trying to include a certain amount of ugliness in his film.
This is something that we’ve already noticed in the designs for the other characters, like the controversial tattoos that Jared Leto is sporting as the Joker and Cara Delevingne’s straggly-haired, dull-skinned look as the Enchantress. It’s a bold approach to take when audiences have come to expect comic book movie characters to have toned muscles, shiny hair, well-tailored costumes, and to generally look like they could have just stepped out of a fashion magazine. The future timeline of X-Men: Days of Future Past, for example, featured characters who looked impressively primped and polished for people who were supposedly on the run.
Do you like the sound of Ayer’s directing style, or do you think Suicide Squad will be as uneven as Captain Boomerang’s facial hair?
