The cast of Warner Bros. supervillain team-up movie Suicide Squad is quickly assembling, with Jared Leto dramatically cutting off his flowing locks of hair and bleaching what remained in preparation for his role as the Joker, and Margot Robbie hinting at a multi-film future for her version of Harley Quinn. The movie's cast has been reshuffled around a few times before settling into place, with the role of team leader Rick Flagg in particular attracting various actors.

After Jake Gyllenhaal, Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy were all linked to Rick Flagg in varying degrees, the most recent reports claimed that Robocop lead Joel Kinnaman had taken the role. There have been a few generations of Rick Flagg in the comics (not to mention varying spellings of the last name), but Kinnaman will be playing the second generation of the character, Rick Flagg Jr..

Kinnaman's involvement in Suicide Squad was yet to be officially confirmed until today, but during a press junket for Jaume Collet-Serra's new thriller Run All Night the actor told Screen Rant what he could about his experiences of pre-production for the film - without getting into spoiler territory, of course.

"I love the script. It's super entertaining and David Ayer is a really interesting director. You know there's a lot of flashy directors who are good with the camera, but when you get people who are from another aspect of filmmaking into a director's role, you're always very happy if it's a writer or an editor, because those are the storytellers, and David is really a storyteller... Even though this is a massive superhero production it's an amazing story.

"The conversations we've had about the characters are really interesting, and he really gets to the bottom of things. Sometimes you're worried, if you're going to do a film like that, that it's just going to be superhero fun but nothing's going to go under the surface. But here I feel like we can get both."

Rick Flagg Suicide Squad

Run All Night also stars Ed Harris in a leading role, which means that we got to quiz him on whether there was any truth to the rumors that he could be playing Rick Flagg Sr. in Suicide Squad. "I don't know anything about that," Harris replied. After a moment he then followed that up with, "Joel mentioned that there was something he wanted me to look at, or think about doing, but I don't know if that was it or not." Could it be that Kinnaman is trying to recruit Harris into the Flagg family?

Kinnaman also mentioned that he has bought a bunch of Suicide Squad comics for research purposes, but he sounded a little overwhelmed by how much history there was to the characters and how many different versions of them there are. There are still a few months left before filming begins, though, which leaves time for him to do some homework - and time for the role of Rick Flagg Sr. to be cast.

Suicide Squad will be in theaters on August 5th, 2016. Run All Night is in theaters on March 13th, 2015.
