WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 4 volume 1

The Duffer brothers tease that Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 will be a "mad symphony of chaos." The first part of the highly anticipated fourth chapter of the Netflix series premiered on May 27 to acclaim from audiences. It garnered a huge reaction and continued Stranger Things ratings success streak, despite its lengthy runtimes. This has caused the new season to be split into two volumes, the second of which contains the final two episodes of the season and releases July 1.

Stranger Things season 4 volume 1 managed to not only meet the expectations of viewers, but exceed them. The fourth chapter is jam-packed with action, emotion, and character depth. With every character at risk, the stakes are higher than ever for the Hawkins crew. The three main storylines - following the teens in Hawkins, the teens in California, and the adults in Russia - transition seamlessly as they ebb and flow to bring all their pieces together into one cohesive story. Stranger Things season 4 has so far been ambitious, but it's brought together the clues that were there all along in the past three seasons, setting up an epic finale in the last two episodes of the season.

Now, Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer share some of their own thoughts on season 4 volume 2. In an interview with TVLine, they provide glimpses into what audiences can expect from the two-part finale. Matt uses the words "emotional" along with "action and spectacle" to describe volume 2, and goes on to borrow a quote from Eddie Munson actor Joe Quinn, who coined the idea of a "mad symphony of chaos." Despite this emphasis on action, the Duffer brothers make sure to clarify that the focus remains on their beloved characters. Read their full quotes below:

Matt: [Volume 2] has a little bit of everything. It’s extremely emotional while also having the most action and spectacle we’ve ever had. [...] Joe Quinn is very eloquent. He’s such a smart kid. He called it a mad symphony of chaos. I’ll borrow that. That’s what it is, especially the final episode.

Ross: We’ve been cross-cutting between these different worlds all season, but the cross-cutting just gets really rapid-fire in the finale as we’re bouncing from one world to the next.

Matt: But it’s not wall-to-wall action. That’s what I like about being able to do something long-form. The finale does very much feel like a blockbuster spectacle, but there’s also a lot of time spent dealing with our characters. Hopefully, it’s satisfying for people.

With three past seasons of epic finales, the Duffer brothers are creating serious expectations with their promise for even more action in Stranger Things season 4 volume 2. The story has so far made good on this promise, from the horrifying violence of Vecna to the vicious Upside Down bats taken on by the Hawkins teens. There are still many questions left to be answered heading into season 4 volume 2, but with Matt hinting to a "blockbuster spectacle," it can be expected that many of those will be answered, if not all. The creators still need some story elements to remain up in the air with season 5 around the corner.

Stranger Things season 4 has so far resonated very well with viewers, as many now anticipate volume 2 with even more excitement than volume 1. With less than a month to go until the season finale, the audience is passing the time by finding the thread that runs throughout every season and leads back to Vecna, including multiple instances of ticking clock sounds. Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" has become their anthem in waiting, which will hopefully be just as rewarding as the Duffer brothers have teased. Only one more season remains after this one, which has already risen the stakes for the Hawkins heroes. Only a few weeks remain until Stranger Things season 4 volume 2, where true chaos and madness await.
