Is Will Byers the villain of Stranger Things season 2? It's too soon to tell, obviously, but that hasn't stopped fans from formulating theories that would explain Will's switch to the dark side of the moral fence. If Will is indeed the bad guy, it likely wouldn't be of his own free will, as he would have no reason to want to hurt the friends and family members that spent all of season 1 trying their best to rescue him from the Upside Down.

Unfortunately, fans will recall that the season 1 finale of Stranger Things made it clear that despite the boy's best attempts to put on a normal face for his loved ones, Will is still being both physically and mentally affected by his journey into the dark dimension that the Demogorgon called home. The season 2 trailer only cemented the idea that Will is being influenced by dark forces, as he was shown being beckoned by monsters from within the Upside Down at seemingly random times.

When asked by Nerdist recently about the theory that Will might be the - or at least a - big bad of season 2, Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy gave a rather cagey answer, one that stopped short of either confirming or denying the scenario. Here's what he had to say:

Will in Stranger Things final scene

"I can neither confirm or deny that theory. All I'm going to say... between the end of season 1 and what we've seen in the trailers, clearly Will is not right. Stuff happens to him and stuff is happening to him and he is very much at the center of season 2."

If Will does indeed turn out to be under the control of otherworldly evil during season 2, one wonders just how tight that control would end up being. Could the evil only force Will to help it accomplish its nefarious goals, or would Will be susceptible enough to its influence that he would go as far as to harm his friends or family members?

Of course, there is also the possibility that even if Will turns evil, he's not under the control of an external creature, but has in fact been corrupted from the inside by what happened to him in season 1. Perhaps Will's very essence has been tainted, and if that's the case, it's anyone's guess as to how he could be returned to normal from such a state. With Eleven set to return from her trip to the other side soon, perhaps it's her who will hold the key to fixing what's wrong with Will and letting him be a normal kid again. If that's even possible.
