The promotion for Stranger Things continues, following on from the first trailer for season 2, which made its debut during Super Bowl LI. Though it’s not set to debut on Netflix until later this year, everyone who’s anyone wants to know how things are going to pan out for the residents of Hawkins, following the return of Will Byers and the destruction of the Demogorgan.

Stranger Things showrunners, Matt and Ross Duffer, are gradually revealing more details about the second season, discussing the arrival of new characters Bob (Sean Astin) and brother and sister duo Billy and Max (Dacre Montgomery and Sadie Sink, respectively), as well as Dr. Owens (Paul Reiser), who now runs the lab which houses the entrance to the Upside Down, where Eleven comes from.

But what of Eleven? So far, we’ve not heard much about Millie Bobby Brown’s role in season two, though it is widely known that she is returning. At the end of season one, viewers will recall that Sheriff Hopper was leaving eggos in the woods for her, but still no one really knew the exact nature of her whereabouts. Talking to EW, Matt Duffer and Brown still won’t give any details, per se, but they have confirmed that we will learn more of Eleven’s murky backstory this time around:

“I want people to know that she’s back and she’s a major part of the season and not know how or why. We do get into her story and backstory. We learn about where she came from and how she came into the world and the program that resulted in her.”

Brown adds: “She has a storyline this season for her, and it’s an emotional transition. Last season I didn’t get to expand [on the character] — this season is giving me that opportunity.”

Eleven Sacrifice Stranger Things

It certainly sounds as though Eleven was bred for the purpose of science, but it could still be that she has a mother out there somewhere, hoping to be reunited with her little girl. In fact, it would be nice if she had someone other than her sinister ‘papa’ or Dr. Brenner that we met in season one. Is Brenner gone for good? His ending did look pretty final, but you never know. What will also be interesting to discover, is whether Eleven can recall any kind of childhood, or whether her whole life has been lived out in a lab. How did she gain her powers, through birth or science?

Elsewhere, we will see the other kids; Dustin, Lucas and Mike, trying to return to normal life with Will back in their friendship group. Though stills from season two suggest they’ve all just picked up where they left off, Will is still seeing visions of the Upside Down, that may or may not be real. With the threat of a new monster looming, and the portal to the Upside Down still open, Eleven and her powers are going to be in high demand during season 2.
