Dacre Montgomery started off his career in a short film titled Bertrand the Terrible, but really hit it big with his feature film debut in this year’s Power Rangers film reboot where he played the Red Ranger. He will now be portraying Billy in Season 2 of Netflix’s Stranger Things.

Screen Rant got a chance to talk with Dacre Montgomery at San Diego Comic-Con 2017, where we discussed his character in Stranger Things, his opinions on the Green Ranger, and what drew him to play Billy in Stranger Things.

Stranger Things Season 2. Tell me a little rundown about your character.

Dacre Montgomery: He’s a bit of an antagonist to be honest. The reference from these boys over here - the Duffer Brothers - was kind of like Jack Nicholson in The Shining. Somebody with an unpredictable nature. Somebody who sort of unnerves the audience. A bit of spice placed in this amazing recipe that has been so tasty and has been so successful. He blows through town. He comes from out of town from California. He ruffles a few feathers and I think that sums him up without giving too much away.

One thing that Stranger Things is great at is the characters in Season 1 started in one place and ended up somewhere completely different and even may have changed the audience’s opinion of them. Will that carry on with your character as well?

Dacre Montgomery: You’re going to have to find out. I’m afraid I can’t say to much on that front. I apologize.

One of the things that I loved about the characters from Season 1 was that it was written in my era. Now I’m sure you are a little bit younger. Were you a kid of the ‘80s?

Dacre Montgomery: No. I wasn’t but as a kid and through adolescence fell in love with that time period with the music and the movies. And having been paid to familiarize myself even more with that time period was a blessing.

One thing that I was a huge fan of your work this year was Power Rangers and I know there is rumors of a sequel. Is there any update on that whatsoever?

Dacre Montgomery: Ah! I feel so bad. I can’t say anything on this front, on the Power Rangers front.

So like a maybe?

Dacre Montgomery: I can’t. I can’t say anything. I’m sorry, but I am glad you liked it. Thank you.

Well here’s something you can talk about since it’s an opinion thing. A lot of people were really surprised by the little end scene with the Green Ranger Tommy at the end. A lot of fans were talking about possibly having Tommy be a female character this time.

Dacre Montgomery: Yeah. I think I was talking about that when we were doing a press conference in L.A. I mean, for me, it was just the whole idea of there’s three boys. There’s two girls. What if the sixth Ranger was a girl? I don’t know. I think it’s open for interpretation. That was just mine and a couple of other cast members’ interpretation. Yeah. But also there’s also some ground there for the OG fans about, like, Tommy is a guy so I’m not wanting to mess with that at the same time as advocating for a girl. So we shall see. I’m not saying there’s a sequel. I’m not saying it’s a girl or a boy, but I hope that if it does go in that direction that everyone can be satisfied with it and that it can be conducive to being a good movie, a good sequel.

So what attracted you to Stranger Things 2 after you read the script. Or did you read the script or were you just told the character rundown?

Dacre Montgomery: Told the character rundown but I think to talk about Power Rangers, I was playing a protagonist and this character is an antagonist so the juxtaposition of the two characters, of the two worlds, and the two creative spaces was really attractive for me.
