On Monday, Screen Rant relayed the great news of Rambo 5 being given the greenlight. It was reported at the time that the story of the next Rambo adventure would follow the bad-ass to the Mexican-U.S. border where he’d tear down a bunch of human traffickers and drug lords to rescue some kidnapped girl.
That part was secondary to seeing Sylvester Stallone back to gruesomely destroy the opposition.
Now comes word that Rambo 5 has a new title, a new poster, and the story we thought we knew isn’t right at all. Apparently, it instead will be about stopping some super-soldier experiments with the Rambo franchise taking a sci-fi twist.
Read on for the details…
Harry Knowles of AICN is pals with Stallone and spoke with him to clarify the matter. According to Harry, the movie is in fact set in the States as reported earlier but not by the south border as we thought. The movie will see John Rambo back where we first met him in the Pacific Northwest where there’s some sort of secret U.S. Military base working on a super soldier program…
Bear with me, I know what you’re thinking…
At this base, they’re attempting to unleash the “savagery” deep down inside of every person to create human weapons. As expected an experiment goes awry and some super killer is unleashed and this is where Rambo and a Black Ops team is brought in the clean up the mess.
Let me guess, Rambo was an early result of these experiments and that’s why he’s the perfect killing machine?
They’ve created a quick teaser poster for the film and here’s a look at it – Click to see the full version at AICN.
Normally, reading this and seeing the quality of this poster, I’d call April Fools… but it’s not April and it comes directly from Harry who spoke with Stallone. From their phone conversation, we also know that the film will include “The Savage Hunt” in the title.
If the story ends up following this path (it is very early in the process still), it’s certainly strange but still very cool in my mind. I don’t really care who the villains are and this sounds much more interesting than the human traffickers/girl rescue story. Bring it!

What do you think of this news? Do you dig this story idea more than the last?
Rambo V: The Savage Hunt begins production next spring.

About the idea, I don’t know? They should try for Scientific fiction. One order more real than Science Fiction, because Rambo in most peoples eyes reflects the best possible synergy. A recruit that was one in a million, taken to the furthest point military training could accomplish but still a real person in the real world.
Wow this is sooooo stupid! Universal Soldier anyone or perhaps Predator!
Either make it right or don’t make it at all!
This is coming from a Sylvester Stallone fan and a fan of the RAMBO franchise.
That image of Rambo infront of the animal is from the final scene of Rambo 2008 when he’s looking over at the carnage I know cos I watched it yesterday.
Sounds a cool idea, but not for Rambo. Rambo is OTT but still grounded in reality. That’s where I prefer it.
Rambo began as a soldier out of a war, lost and confused, and I really liked the ending of the fourth one where he went home. That felt like a genuine resolution.
I think if this is made right this will be a belter of a film, if they concentrate on the chase side of things insted of the whole superhuman soilder stuff (as above to much like Universal Soldier) i think with sly’s recent work we should all expect a very grapich war film,
for those who are not sure just think rambo taking on the hulk and winning lol
peace out!
It could be just Sly busting Harry’s chops, you never know.
@ SK-47,
By the sounds of the story ideas they spoke of, I wouldn’t be surprised. Maybe he’s simply gauging the reaction to it before going ahead with a script…
I don’t know what to believe about the new movie. There’s about 5 different theories about the plotline.
For example, here’s one site’s take on it:

Supersoldier is ofcourse a big word, if I had to make a not to far fetched thing of this idea (for the script) I’d say they try to make a supersoldier by psychologicaly altering a soldier, making him smarter, more determined (and not specifically stronger, than it would be rambo vs Rambo). And when the supermart psycho breaks out, they bring in the big gun’s (including Rambo) to cave in his head.
It’s probably still cheap, but it would be my take on the idea. (I would ofcourse need more time to actually make something out of it
)
I hope Brian Dennehy makes an appearance.
@ TJ,
That sounds like what this may be about – reading Harry’s post, Stallone says that they’re training them since kids to be incredibly aggressive – not mention of serums or genetic alterations.
As Harry puts it, “instinctual killer soldiers that have no qualms about taking life”
I agree with Rob .
Sounds like Behavior Modification to me.
Nothing to worry about.
And I Think the title is much better then simply calling it Rambo.
Personally, I think this new idea is terrible. I’ve enjoyed all the Rambo films, and most of Stallone’s films in general, but this just sounds cheesy. I like the first idea of rescuing a girl from drug/human trafficking and just blowing the sh*t out of stuff. Leave the whole idea of super soldiers to Marvel and sci-fi. Just have Rambo kick some bad guy butt!!!
Oh, and that poster is AWFUL.
ya, the Poster is pretty bad – I like the header I made better, lol
It doesnt sound like Stallone himself is using the term SuperSoldier, sounds like that is how Harry interpreted it .
as far as bringing out savagery in a soldier goes ,
Heck,Kubrick did that to Vincent Donofrios character in Full Metal Jacket .
And it has nothing to do with creating the Next Steve Rogers or Universal Soldier its been done since the beginning of military training .
Which I think is kind of Stallones point.
Can’t he just go kill all the Taliban mother-fers he helped in Rambo III?
Why is it politically incorrect to have Muslim Fanatics as villians in film?? Who runs hollywood now, a bunch of pansies afraid of reality and the Daily Koz?
im a huge Rambo fan, and i like this idea alot more then the whole kidnaped girl thing. if one right this movie could be very good. my xbox live user name is rambokilla36. 36 being my favorite number

I think you’ll find this article interesting:

Vic
Sounds like a Wal-Mart book title
Bad idea. Rambo should just kill tons of regular dudes instead of like maybe ten super soldiers.
This sound too stupid to be true.
I don’t know how the author of this article could think this is a cool idea.
Harry updated with Sly’s voicemail that it’s a creature or something. Kinda reminds me of the great Dean Koontz book “Watchers” (not the bad Corey Haim movie) about a genetically engineered creature and intelligent dog.
heath
the savage hunt? seriously?
great another indiana jones , not saying it was bad, just could have been better. IS george lucas involved ????
Vic
You answered my question nicely. Everyone should read that article
Sounds good to me .
Lord Garth,
I did read the article.
I liked it.
