  As a young boy, Magneto (born Erik Magnus Lehnsherr) was interred in the Auschwitz concentration camp, a victim of the inhumanity suffered during World War II. Like the serial number tattooed on his arm, he carries with him the memories of mankind's capacity for cruelty. A mutant endowed with the power to control magnetism, he fears that history will repeat itself and humankind will subject mutants to a modern holocaust. In his quest to prevent this, his extremist viewpoints and militant methods have branded him as a zealot and an outlaw, fueling a life-long conflict with one of his dearest friends, Charles Xavier. Where Xavier and his X-men seek peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants (Homo-Superior), Magneto and his "Brotherhood of Mutants" subscribe to a doctrine of mutant self-reliance and separatism.
