Just in case you thought Steven Spielberg didn’t have enough on his plate, the filmmaker has added another biopic to his long list of projects in development. However, unlike his plans to depict the lives of Abraham Lincoln, George Gershwin and Martin Luther King Jr., this isn’t one of his directorial options. Instead, he’ll merely produce a film about First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
The script for Jackie was written by journalist and Today Show producer Noah Oppenheim. Rather than detailing the First Lady’s whole life, as previous TV movies in 1981 (ABC), 1991 (NBC) and 2000 (CBS) have, this film will focus on the aftermath of her husband’s assassination and be told from her point of view. Actually, the 1981 Jackie O movie, starring Jaclyn Smith in the lead role, portrayed her only up until JFK’s death, so Jackie is almost like a sequel to that.
In addition to Smith, actresses who’ve inhabited the role of Jacqueline Kennedy include Blair Brown, Joanne Whalley, Stephanie Romanov, Jill Hennessy, Jacqueline Bisset and a young pre-Buffy Sarah Michelle Gellar. Most recently the famous First Lady was played by Jeanne Tripplehorn in Grey Gardens, which takes place about ten years after Jackie would – otherwise, I’d suggest Tripplehorn reprise the role.
I’m going to throw this out there: how about bringing Gellar back? She played Jackie O as as a teen back in 1991 (see above) and now she’s the perfect age for the Jackie O of 1963.
In Gellar’s defense, let me remind you that nobody thought that Gellar’s I Know What You Did Last Summer co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt would be any good as Audrey Hepburn in The Audrey Hepburn Story, and she was at least okay. And Gellar’s always had more potential than Hewitt – maybe this could be the role in which she proves it?
I’m sure some of you Buffy fans would agree. As for the rest, who would you cast as the famed First Lady in Steven Spielberg’s Jackie?
