When director James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy  first greeted audiences in the late Summer of 2014, many general moviegoers were unfamiliar with the relatively unknown original Marvel Comics property and the film’s success was still up to chance and the whims of superhero fandom. Fortunately for everyone involved, the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 2 feature was a huge hit with critics and general audiences alike and went on to score just shy of $800 million at the global box office.

As filming continues on Gunn’s follow-up MCU Phase 3 film, viewers who found Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and the rest of his rag-tag crew more than thrilling the first time around are expectedly waiting with bated breath for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to arrive next Summer. One such viewer has come forward to praise Guardians of the Galaxy publicly, at that.

While speaking to omelete and the rest of the foreign press at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival this past weekend in support of his new film The BFG, Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg saw fit to make some remarks on his favorite superhero movies of all time, and at the top of his list was Gunn and Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy.

Speaking to the film’s thematic clarity and distinctive vision when compared to other comic book films of the past, Spielberg stated:

“I really like Richard Donner’s Superman, Nolan’s Dark Knight and the first Iron Man movie, but the superhero movie that most impressed me was Guardians of the Galaxy. When it ended, I left the cinema with the feeling that I had just experienced something new, free of cynicism and without concern for being gritty when necessary.”

Granted, the original quote was printed in French, though that didn’t stop Guardians of the Galaxy director Gunn from taking to Twitter to express is his earnest thanks to Spielberg for the praise and recognition from one of his personal heroes, before requesting an English language translation of the text in question from his followers. You can see Gunn’s tweets below:

It’s heartening to hear that a moviemaking giant as large in terms of influence as Spielberg would take the time to praise a movie like Guardians of the Galaxy, which only goes to show how well deserved the praise accolades heaped onto Gunn have been all along. On that note, here’s to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and the future of the ever expanding MCU.
