Swedish-born Stellan Skarsgård (Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3, Angels & Demons) has been added to the cast of Marvel Studios’ Thor film.
Skarsgård joins Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Jaimie Alexander (Sif), Colm Feore and Brian Blessed (Odin).
The actor says he cannot reveal who he’s playing in the film, as with Colm Feore whom we only know will be playing some sort of villain.

The 58 year old actor was initially asked to join the Thor cast without being given a chance to read the script. This was due to Marvel’s efforts to keep plot details secure and secret but that wouldn’t work for Skarsgård.
“They wanted me to sign without reading the script. That I refused to do. Then they sent one to me that was so coded that I could only print one copy.”
What’s ironic about all of this is the fact that Stellan’s son, Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood) was a lead candidate to play the titular role of Thor in this film until Mr. Hemsworth nabbed that spot. He must be jealous of his father now.

Stellan Skarsgård as Cerdic in King Arthur
Kenneth Branagh’s project is coming together well and I am impressed and excited about the cast so far. He continues to add strong talent and actors that fall in line with his Shakespearean roots. Mr. Skarsgård is not new to playing roles in period pieces, having played important characters in King Arthur, Beowulf and Grendel and Pirates of the Caribbean.
What do you think of the cast so far and of Stellan Skarsgård’s addition?
Thor begins production next Spring and hits theaters on May 20, 2011.

im very excited about this – seems the whole process has been at least methodical. i expect this movie not to be anything less than spectacular. finally a comic to movie about a character that not only has his own awesome universe to explore but one that i’d never in a million years thought that they would make into a movie.
Great news, just one question…When did Brian Blessed get added to the cast??
I think he going to play Balder
Balder is not a villain
Perrikus ?
or
Skurge the Executioner ?
im a little sketchy on thor villians other than Loki and enchantress.
i just hopee they dont cast him as the wrecker.
the wrecker …….. anyone remember him.
i hope not cuz he stikes fear into the eyes of his nemises with his Mighty Crowbar.
thats right a crowbar.
oh well i have faith in marvel.
and Skarsgård looked Bad@$$ in the photo with the beard.
so either way.
i belive in Marvel.
He’s a great addition but the one that worries me is portman. She’s a fine acctress but I didn’t like her in star wars.
This is ten kinds of badass, I love Stellan Skarsgard. Too bad Colm Feore isn’t playing Loki.
@ MemnochZERO,
Colm Feore is all kinds of awesome – I’d dig him in any role for this flick
Brian Blessed is Odin
Everything else is window dressing
funny, i was just watching king arthur and thought that he was a scene stealer and hoped he would get a part in thor. i guess great minds think alike.
by the way, the guy with the crowbar was called the absorbing man (crusher creel). not likely skarsgard would fit that part. now if they announce vin diesel to the cast, we will know that crusher walks among them.
They finally got a guy that everyone can see in a Norse movie.
Along with Colin that is
@ roger
The Wrecker was the villain with the crowbar, the Absorbing Man had the Ball & Chain weapon. 2 different villains that were part of the Wrecking Crew gang.
Still waiting, When was Brian Blessed added to the cast??
thanx manowar, correct.
can’t seem to get my head out of the bring on absorbing man thing. my favorite villain and vinnie would be so good at it.
blessed was rumored to be added over a year ago…
the imdb site still says “rumored”
the only part i can see him playing is that of the grand vizier who is odin’s advisor but don’t think he is needed in this film,or the only other possible role for him is to play heimdal the guardian of the rainbow bridge.
Man…this keeps getting better and better. Such a s great actor,….whatever part he gets, he will be brilliant!
@ Manowar,
There’s not been an official confirmation/press release but he’s been in talks for it since last December, before anyone else, and it’s been reported as such since June.
I believe he will be playing Odin. As for Skarsgard, I’m not sure.
Mostly likely our Heimdall… but who knows.
