Warning! Spoilers for Static: Season One #6

In the upcoming finale to Static: Season One, Virgil Hawkins is donning a more traditional costume resembling his animated incarnation’s suit. After wearing a prototype suit given to him by Curtis Metcalf AKA Hardware, he seems to be coming into his own.

Throughout Static: Season One, Virgil has been on a journey to becoming the superhero that fans know. He has gained electromagnetic powers, fought Hotstreak, and flown around Dakota City on a manhole cover. As he recruits the help of his friends, the new hero has run into meta-humans who readers might recognize from the animated series, Static Shock. The band of bang babies includes Puff, Shiv, Talon, D-Struct, and Onyx, along with a snake-like meta-human.

As revealed in a preview released by DC Comics, Static: Season One #6 will give Virgil Hawkins a new costume. In the upcoming climatic issue, Static is set to wear a more recognizable version of his suit. Previously featured on covers and the credits page of each issue, the design includes Static’s iconic emblem on his chest, with refined aspects of his current costume. As teased throughout the first season, the next issue will pay off Virgil’s growth when he solidifies his place as Dakota’s newest superhero. Static #6 is written by Vita Ayala with art by Nikolas Draper-Ivey, featuring a cover by Khary Randolph and a variant by Draper-Ivey. The finale to the first season will release in digital and print formats on Tuesday, February 22.

Based on Randolph’s cover, it seems that Static will also have a rematch with Hotstreak, who he had first fought at school in the series’ debut issue. Since then, they’ve faced off a few times, with the finale issue set to prove who the more powerful meta-human is between the two of them. Previously, Virgil overpowered Hotstreak on two occasions, without understanding the extent of his abilities. By now, Hotstreak likely has a better handle on his powers, learning from his work with Agent Jones, and possibly working alongside the other meta-humans like Shiv and Talon.

The finale issue titled “Shock to the System,” is essentially a tribute to the animated series which fans have regarded as the seminal version of the character. Named after Static’s catchphrase from the show, the issue also serves as the first comic book appearance for many of Static's animated rogues. Following the issue’s release, Static: Season One will be collected as a hardcover edition on June 7.
