In celebration of Black History Month, DC Comics has unveiled a tribute to the superheroes of Milestone’s Dakotaverse, including Static, Icon, Rocket, Hardware, and more illustrated by Doug Braithwaite. The piece also alludes to the upcoming reboot of the fan favorite team, Blood Syndicate.

Last year, the Milestone heroes returned to comics after a long hiatus with three ongoing titles including Static, Icon and Rocket, and Hardware. Now, they are a part of DC’s celebration for February’s Black History Month. Previously, DC and Milestone were set to release a special anthology one-shot, Milestones in History, incorporating Static, Icon, Rocket, and Hardware alongside real world black heroes from history. Although the one-shot has been postponed to release in June, Milestone's Dakotaverse is still a rightful part of the month’s celebrations.

In an announcement by DC Comics, the publisher unveiled tribute art and variant covers to commemorate Black History Month, including Doug Braithwaite’s piece titled, “A Celebration of Milestone Super Heroes.” The tribute features Dakota’s superheroes such as Static, Icon, Rocket, and Hardware. Braithwaite’s art also debuts members of the Blood Syndicate, including Wise Son, adding anticipation for Milestone’s upcoming reboot of the title. Although Dakota’s leading superheroes haven’t officially all met each other yet, the art teases what their inevitable team-up might be like.

The tribute provides fans with a glimpse of the Dakotaverse’s likely future. As Virgil wears a new suit as Static, he joins his peer Raquel Ervin AKA Rocket, who he recently met at their high school in Icon and Rocket: Season One #5. Virgil has also met Curtis Metcalf AKA Hardware, who had supplied him with his prototype costume. As Static takes centerstage, it’s possible he’ll be the one to bring the team together.

DC’s Black History Month commemorations also included elaboration about the previously announced Milestone Initiative, a mentorship program from DC, Milestone Media, and Ally which aims to discover new creative talent among people of color. Submissions recently closed for the initiative, inferring that chosen applicants might be announced shortly. The Milestone Talent Development Program has been looking for writers and artists to train them to becoming professionals. Chosen applicants will be enrolled to the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, and will later join other creators to work on stories of their own set in the Dakotaverse. More updates for The Milestone Initiative have been teased to come soon, as a one-week summit begins on February 14 in Burbank, California, where the DC Comics headquarters is located.
