Stargate Universe is Awesome.....I loved SG1 and Atlantis and was devistated when they ended Atlantis and have taken so long to maybe give us a movie......but Universe is dark and gritty and has taken a while to develop the characters but it is getting great. Rush is brillient with alternative motives, the struggle for power between the civilian and military and the discovery of new species, tech and a million year old ancient ship.......Love it...Hope it goes for 5 - 10 seasons.

Metacritic summarizes the response as "generally favorable reviews", but with several critics showing reservation.[48] Being one of the few Stargate franchise releases that were well-received by major media publishers, Mike Hale from The New York Times was generally positive towards the pilot episodes, saying the Stargate franchise was "catching up" with the long-running Star Trek franchise. Hale also agreed with Syfy's promotion of it being an "edgier" Stargate.[49] The Boston Globe reviewer Joanna Weiss also reacted positively towards the pilot episodes, saying it felt like "early Lost", while the story arc followed the patterns of Battlestar Galactica.[50] Mark Wilson from About.com gave the episode four-and-a-half stars out of 5, saying Universe accomplishes what Stargate Atlantis was not able to, and said it was "exceptionally well made" compared to other shows.[51] The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette both praised the show, calling it "intriguing", for not abandoning its premise as Star Trek: Voyager did and criticized it by pointing out that the characters spend "far too much time wandering a desert planet" in "Air (Part 3)". The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette summarized their review by saying that, "[g]iven time, Stargate Universe may become worth watching if it develops its characters and continues to mine its premise for stories."[52] David Hinckley, a reviewer from The New York Daily News gave the episodes four out of five stars, saying that "Eli's not the only one playing a high-stakes game here."[53]

Me: It would be a shame if they cancled this show, seeing as it's getting way better. I thought people would be happier seeing a new spin, espacially since Atlantis basically screwed up with the John/Teyla/ Baby thing at the end. What was up with that? lol. But seriously, jokes aside, I've been watching the show and it keeps me on the edge of my seat. Give it a try guys. It WILL get way better. But it's already a shame that people are boycotting the show, because they say it might be cancled because of low ratings. If that happens, I'm sure it will become like another "Firefly" series thingy, underrated, but KICKASS. lol

Try watching the entire show and please give it a try. The character have a LOT of depth, and it's derpessing that people won't give this awesome show a try. I remember when they canceled SG-1 and everyone hated Atlantis. And now look, Atlantis is so love that everyone wants it back. It's the same with this show. It just keeps getting better and better every episode. Trust me. It's an awesome show, it's edgier, but maintains everything that is funny, humerous, and famillar about the older series. To me, it's a step up. Yeah I miss the old ones, but if you continue watching, all the old characters come back. Jack is a reoccuring character now. It's just awesome. Watch some more and you'll see how much better it gets. It is VERY character centered and all the characters have a lot of depth.

I watched the premere episode, It is the dark and depressing show that the promos depicted, I called this one spot on, and the sex scene was totally uncalled for!
I will not watch anymore, they have ruined the gate franchise, it is indeed Stargate Voyager 90210 with a splash of porno, who needs this crap?
Lets go back to what made Gate Franchise successful, a fun adventure show that is geared for the entire family, not the disaster that will feed the dark side of society which is made up of perverts and the mentally disterbed violent derelicts! If The franchise wants its viewers back, then bring back SG1 or Atlantis, as we reject this depressing show!

I do hope this new Stargate Universe comes to the UK, I have loved all the Stargate shows, and was really miffed when they were cancelled. I really hope this new take on Stargate is as good as it's excellent predecessors.

The trailers show it up for the dark depressing show it most likly is, Lou Diamond has not been doing very well in anything he does in recent years, the established fan base of Gate, is ticked off with the dark change and losing Atlantis, so they will not watch, with all this it is doomed!

"What made the francise work was that it has been family friendly, and not too serious, SG1 & Atlantis were great fun and adventure, I have 2 reasons I wont watch SGU First and foremost I am mad at the people for axing Atlantis to make way for this new catastrophy of a show, Second, I have checked out the trailers, it is a different show that does not deserve the name Stargate! It sucks, it has fortified my decision not to watch it, it is a waste of time, I give it a dozen episodes to cancellation, then maybe the writers will come to there sences and bring Atlantis back!"

You're acting like you've seen it...

We've had 15 years of the same thing. A lot of people said it was getting stale, and there was very little buzz about it when compared to things like BSG. This show is getting a lot more buzz, so tptb are doing something right.

The body-switching was introduced in SG-1 season 9. And the stones themselves in season 8's "Citizen Joe". Homer Simps...I mean, Dan Castellaneta's character experienced what Jack did and vice-versa but because there was no proper device, but just a stone for each of them, they couldn't exactly switch bodies.

The body-swapping thing was announced as being a part of the show a long time ago and I'm glad they're doing it. It keeps consistency going. I mean, they're on an Ancient ship. That's an Ancient long-range communication device. If they DIDN'T have it, fans would be bitching about "plotholes!"...

As for the budget thing. Clearly, this is a more expensive series. Wright made that clear the moment he pitched the series and he announced intentions of a new spin-off. In regards to the SGA cancellation - it wasn't doing great in terms of ratings, but it wasn't horrible either. However, it just seems Wright really wanted something new. And it was either wait a year and do just SGA season 6, do both or end SGA. Wright clearly wanted to start work on SGU, and MGM wanted a younger audience(as in 20-30 instead of 40-50-year-olds). Economically, doing both at the same time simply wasn't viable(not to mention that the amount of work would be huge). So, good-bye SGA, welcome SGU.

I agree that they should have let Atlantis go on for at least another season if they could-only if they utilized the gloriously sexy Jason Mamoa to full advantage.

And we have a winner!

Good recall John... that's exactly what the stones they were referring to that they'll be using. I left that out, waiting for someone to hit on it.

Good job!

No... no real prize except for the emotional attaboy!

Well, the body-swapping thingy isn't new to SG. In SG-A, the female doctor swapped bodies with a thief after touching a certain stone. The thief inadvertently activated a device that swapped her body with the last person that touched the stone. I don't see a problem with this.

Have to confess that the whole body-swap thing is the first news to give me pause about this new series. Just seems very contrived, and I'm uncertain how it could really contribute to the overall storyline.

As for Atlantis, I got the feeling it was probably starting to get expensive with the actors, too. That's just an assumption, mind you, but it seems logical to assume that some contracts had to be coming up for the long-term cast members such as Joe Flanigan, Rachel Luttrell, David Hewlett and Jason Momoa. Those four had grown into the most popular, and that would certainly put them in a good position to negotiate more money.
