As time plods away, more and more members are being added to the cast of stranded humans in the upcoming Sci-Fi Channel series Stargate: Universe. (SGU)
The latest additions include Ming-Na, Elyse Levesque, Alaina Huffman and Lou Diamond Philips. Yep, Lou Diamond Philips.

Ming-Na comes to us from ER and will be playing Camille Wray, a company HR bigwig.
Elyse Levesque will be playing Chloe Armstrong, the daughter of a U.S. Senator who has a bit of a wild side. We’ve previously seen her on Smallville.
Alaina Huffman now has a chance to redeem herself in this role. You may recognize her as the girl who played Black Canary on Smallville, and was in Sci-Fi’s Painkiller Jane. She’s going to be playing Tamara Johansen who’s an inexperienced field medic with some ‘tude.
Ba ba ba La-bamba!! Sorry, I couldn’t help myself but that’s what comes to mind for me in one of many roles that Lou Diamond Philips (Did you know his birthname is Louis Upchurch?) has played. I particularly liked his devilishly nasty role as Cisco in The Big Hit with Mark Wahlberg. His latest work has him making a guest appearance in Patrick Swayze’s The Beast and has been recently in a number of episodes on Numb3rs recently.
Philips has been cast as Colonel Telford, a career military man and chosen leader of the band of lost humans in SGU. I’ve enjoyed Philips in some of his previous roles and I think he’ll add a nice bit of depth with Carlyle as they lead the rest of the cast down this perilous new journey.
These four new cast members join Robert Carlyle, Justin Louis, David Blue, Jamil Walker Smith and Brian J. Smith who have already been cast in roles on Stargate: Universe. SGU is the newest chapter of the Stargate franchise about a group of humans who find themselves stranded on an Ancients ship, auto-cruising through deep space.
They started filming last week in Vancouver and the show is due to air in October of 2009.

This is shaping up to be a really interesting cast. I hope the scripts for it turn out just as good. One thing I’ve really come to enjoy about Stargate (SG-1 and Atlantis) is how each season seems to build up to each finale. The one thing I do have to wonder is just how many of these cast members will stay throughout the series. Atlantis didn’t always do a very good job with handling its cast (at least, not behind the scenes).
Being that this show is headed into uncharted cosmos, it will be very interesting with that they come up with.

The only thing about this show that worries me is the same issue that plagued “Star Trek Voyager.” When your main characters are constantly traveling, how do you create a credible recurring villain? Seriously. That Voyager kept running into all of the same people no matter how far they traveled did get a bit ludicrous. One must marvel that they ever got home. Hopefully, the stargates will provide the necessary explanation for this, but we’ll have to wait to find out.

Some big names in this cast, I’m curious and excited
I don’t watch the boob tube but I and I have never seen an episode of anything related to Stargate..loved the movie with Kurt Russell..anybody see a movie with Lou Diamond Phillips called The First Power? I haven’t seen it in almost 20 years and I was wondering how it has aged..

But they need to be careful not to tread too much on familiar ground.
When they stopped Atlantis and spoke about this I was pretty annoyed and put off. But now I’m looking forward to seeing this.
Stargate has certainly come a long way from ‘hey, MacGyver’s in this!’
Also, I rememever LDP’s in that movie with Wahlberg and he was good.
For some reason I always remember that he was in the first series of 24, if briefly.
Ooh, a young and hip cast, one with a wild side, the other with an attitude, oh my, no cliche’s and gimmicks at all!
And Lou Diamond being in it is bad news, that means no more B movies for him! I can always spot a B movie when LDP is playing the leading role, he is like the king of B movies…
Oh he was in that movie about the killer bats. Think it was even called ‘Bats’.
That was a b movie in more ways than one!
This is not a rip off of voyager, because the whole “lost in space” thing was first seen, well, in Lost in space back in the 50’s
I just hope they don’t make the new series for teenagers as the rumors say, so if we are not lucky, new stargate might be full of kissing and romantic scenes. Yukk.

I’m kind of hoping the Goa’uld will show up. Those guys made awesome villains.
They were the best and most enduring villains. The show started to get too hoky sci-fi after the replicators became the main villains, then when the ori came in it just got weird… At least when it was the goa-uld, even though they were aliens with weird worm things in them, it was basically a conflict between men. There was the whole battle of the wits and clashing of the egos dynamic that just became missing after that…
Cmon have to give it a go.Voyager was the best of the Star trek.New aliens and inventive storylines can make this show work.Look what happens if u get stuck in the same place – Deep Space Nine yuk
