Season 1 of Stargate Universe came to its conclusion on June 11th and its finale left fans eager for more. Stargate Universe (SGU) is the third Stargate television series to air on Syfy, another spin-off from Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis before it.

Stargate: Atlantis was known for its cameos and cross-overs with SG-1 and the Stargate Universe series has followed suit with cameos of several main cast members from the original series. If you're a fan of of the Stargate franchise, you'll be excited to know that deals are in place for SGU to continue the tradition and crossover with Stargate: Atlantis for the first time during its second season.

Unlike its predecessor series', SGU is strictly based within the confines of an ancient starship with limited exposure to planet surfaces through the use of a Stargate. The story of Universe - not too dissimilar from SG:A - follows a group of survivors including scientists, military personnel and civilians stranded on the Destiny (the Ancient ship) as they helplessly attempt to make their way home with little to no control of the automated vessel which now acts as their home, all the while dealing with internal issues of politics, cabin fever and basic survival.

The season finale left our favorite characters in an awkward situation with the ship losing power and stability due to a nearby binary neutron star, all during an invasion by the Lucian Alliance. We know our heroes will live to fight another day because Stargate Universe and Stargate Atlantis executive producer Joseph Mallozzi revealed some details along with confirmation that Stargate Universe will be crossing paths with the Atlantis crew.

Stargate Universe Season 2 Characters

On his personal blog,  Mallozzi posted the following on Thursday:

"With word from producer John G. Lenic that the deals have been closed on those Atlantis alums, we can now move forward on the script, secure in the knowledge that both extra-special guest stars will actually be on hand to say the dialogue written for specifically for them.  Great news for fans of the old series.  There was a reluctance to move ahead with an SGA crossover, particularly on my part, because the feeling was it would step on the timing of the SGA movie, Stargate: Extinction, the events of which directly proceed the Atlantis series finale, Enemy at the Gate.  But given the delay on the movie front and the ideal premise pitched out by Remi Aubuchon and Brad Wright, it was decided to go ahead with the crossover.  Not a big deal, but it will require some changes to the Stargate: Extinction timeline which, in turn, will beg a host of questions, some of which will be answered in episode #15, some of which won’t…at least not right away."

If you're a fan of the Stargate franchise, you absolutely must check out the Joseph Mallozzi blog where he goes into detail about some issues that will need to be addressed for the Stargate: Extinction film and more recently, questions about Atlantis and Universe.

We won't yet know which specific SG:A characters will be making an appearance until Syfy makes an official announcement but with them having a Stargate Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con next week, I'm sure you can put two and two together as to when we may hear more.

Stargate Atlantis Characters in Stargate Universe Season 2

SGU is one of my favorite new shows and I've been digging the Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks cameos so far - I hope it works just as well with whoever they add from Atlantis.

I'll be attending the panel and will let you know what I find out so follow us on Twitter @rob_keyes and @screenrant.

Created by Robert C. Cooper and Brad Wright, Stargate: Universe stars Robert Carlyle, David Blue, Justin Louis, Brian J. Smith, Alaina Huffman, Jamil Walker Smith, Elyse Levesque, Ming-Na. Season 2 premieres on my birthday: September 28th, 2010.
