Think about it. They spent year after year thinking "this" year would be the last one, and making episodes that started to wrap things up, only to get a reprieve. Finally, they feel somewhat secure after so many seasons on Sci-fi, and then they lower the boom - mid season no less. Now they have to tie up every storyline they've opened up within half a season? Without warning? A dvd release makes sense in that it gives an opportunity for proper closure, instead of a rushed one. Here's hoping they do ten seasons of episodes justice with the feature release.
