An announcement regarding the third Star Wars spinoff movie could be coming as early as this summer. Amidst all the excitement that The Force Awakens would be picking up the Skywalker Saga a few years back, another bit of information got fans just as excited. With the news that every other year would provide a new episode, we also learned that Lucasfilm and Disney would fill the gaps with an anthology/spinoff film telling a story somewhat outside of the traditional story. After the massive success of The Force Awakens, the stage was set for the first attempt at a Jedi-free movie. Luckily, it too proved to be a hit, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story breaking the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

During Star Wars Celebration Orlando this weekend, we heard from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy that the success of Rogue One emboldened her and the team to push forward with more spinoffs. While rumors have swirled for years as to what these movies would focus on, the only confirmation we've had is the 2018 will bring with it an untitled Han Solo film exploring the character's early years as a smuggler and examining the various characters who helped shape the lovable scoundrel. Now, we may be close to the reveal of the 2020 Anthology Film.

Speaking with MTV, Kennedy said that news of the spinoff that's set for 2020 is on the horizon.

“I think we’re getting close. My hope would be sometime around the summer. I never want to predict the creative process because it is its own thing, so we’re in the midst of those discussions right now.”

Rogue One – A Star Wars Story.

While her answer is hardly definitive, the reveal of the teaser for The Last Jedi means Lucasfilm can start looking towards the future. With the proposed spinoff film coming in 2020, there's still plenty of time to assemble the team for the film and shoot it. As such, we could easily not hear news of it for at least another year or two. Luckily, it looks like Lucasfilm won't be making us wait too much longer to at least learn what the movie will focus on.

Of course, we still haven't learned the actual name for the Han Solo film, so there's no telling how much this proposed announcement would even reveal. Like the Han Solo movie, it's likely we'll only learn the focus of the movie and not a title or star. Rumors have long pointed towards a Boba Fett movie, but those plans may be folded into the Han Solo story. Another recent rumor has been of an Obi Wan movie, focusing on his younger years or even his time in isolation. Fans are also hoping for the anthology films to move beyond the characters and events we already know and explore new parts of the galaxy. Hopefully, this summer will finally let us know what the 2020 Anthology Film will be about.
