Star Wars has finally revealed the full story behind Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, creator of the Clone Army. Sifo-Dyas is one of the greatest mysteries of the Prequel Era, the Jedi Master who commissioned the creation of the Clone Army from the cloners of Kamino.

George Lucas originally intended for Sifo-Dyas to be an alias for Darth Sidious, but he changed plans while working on the script of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Instead, Lucas decided Sifo-Dyas was a patsy, who conveniently served Palpatine's purpose. He intended to reveal his backstory in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, but was forced to cut several plot points from the film in order to focus on Anakin. As a result, Sifo-Dyas' story was relegated to an episode of The Clone Wars, where it was revealed he had ordered the clones and subsequently been killed by the criminal empire called the Pykes.

Cavan Scott's audiobook Dooku: Jedi Lost finally presents Sifo-Dyas' backstory in full, and in so doing it clears up one of the greatest mysteries of the Prequels. The audiobook reveals Sifo-Dyas trained alongside Dooku, and that the two were close friends. The two discovered the existence of the Bogan Collection, a secret trove of dark side artifacts that were guarded by the Jedi. He caught the eye of Jedi Master Lene Kostana, a somewhat unorthodox Jedi who was responsible for collecting many of these artifacts, and who strongly believed the Sith were about to return. Kostana, of course, was right; at pretty much the same time, a Nabooian politician named Palpatine was beginning to build contacts with the Jedi Council.

Master Kostana encouraged Sifo-Dyas to experiment with the Cosmic Force, an aspect of the Force that is focused on visions of the future. In general, the Jedi of the Prequel Era had neglected this aspect of the Force; Master Yoda, in particular, argued that aggressively attempting to sense the future was a vain attempt to control it, and thus an expression of the dark side. In the case of Sifo-Dyas, exposure to the Cosmic Force left him forever vulnerable to spontaneous, uncontrollable visions of the future. Although Sifo-Dyas became a Jedi Master, he clashed with the Jedi Council on many occasions, particularly under the influence of these visions. He began glimpsing a coming war, and argued that the Jedi needed an army.

After all these years, the mystery of Sifo-Dyas has at last been explained. The Clone Wars fills out the last details, confirming that Sifo-Dyas went rogue and commissioned the Clone Army without the Council's knowledge. Unfortunately for the prescient Jedi Master, his actions were discovered by the Sith, and Palpatine integrated the Clone Army into his plans. Concerned that Sifo-Dyas' abilities made him a threat, Darth Sidious ordered his new apprentice to have Sifo-Dyas killed. And so it was that, in the end, Sifo-Dyas was targeted by a crime cartel who had been paid by none other than his childhood friend - Count Dooku himself.
