Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in its final push before it hits theaters on December 16. It is already the most buzzed-about movie of the fall season and is likely to continue dominating social media buzz through the wintertime. But there’s still six weeks to go before the first of at least three Star Wars anthology movies is unleashed, so there’s still plenty of time for promotion.

Previous trailers and promos for Rogue One have not revealed much detail about the group of rebels that eventually unite to steal the plans for the Death Star from the Galactic Empire. Beyond a handful of clips giving a glimpse at their skills as fighters or a loose description of their relationship with Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), it’s been curious for viewers as to how the group will fit together. The newest TV spot puts more emphasis on the group, hinting at a strong leader in Erso and a rebellion bound by a unified desire to fight Imperial forces.

The new TV spot features mostly Erso speaking against the Empire, presumably to the group of rebels shown in previous trailers. There’s not much new footage in here, besides a fresh glimpse of the epic AT-AT battle that’s been heavily featured, but there is more emphasis on how the group helps each other. In a repackaged, updated version of a sequence from the second trailer, Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen) struggles to fight off a band of stormtroopers but armored warrior Baze Malbus (We Jiang) has his back.

stand alone Star Wars: Rogue One TV Spot Builds a Rebellion on Hope

“We have hope. … Rebellions are built on hope,” says Erso to the group, who ostensibly follow her lead in the battle against the Empire and mission to find the Death Star plans. An unseen character responds “All the way,” when she asks the group if they’re with her. The new TV spot is easily the most striking example of the band of rebels uniting together in the fight against the Empire.

The spot is also the strongest establishment yet of Jyn Erso as a fearless leader. She was certainly a rebel, and Jones recently described how she is a “cool female character,” but it wasn’t clear from the trailers how willing Erso really was to actually lead a group of rebels in a singular fight. The new TV spot puts any dissenting notions to rest as Erso appears not just to lead by example but to become the vocal leader the rebellion needed at the time.

Though many of the general character and plot details are well-known at this point, it’s still unclear how deep Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s character development will ultimately be. It’s also unknown just how strong the chemistry will be among the rebels in the group, especially between Jyn Erso and her apparent sidekicks Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker). The movie will clearly feature spectacular visual effects and action sequences, but ultimately it will be the performances that make the biggest difference.
